While appreciating the plight of the people furloughed right now , that is not
the real story here, the real story here is about money management by the
government and by the individual. The Federal government cannot continue
spending money that they do not have. If something isn't done soon, then
these people would have much bigger problem. While the goals of obamacare are
admirable,, the costs have not been covered by Congress and there is no money
left. The other story is about people already pulling out their hair when
they lost only two days worth of income, we all need to live more within our
means so that we can survive interruptions like these. We, both the
government and the indivual, should both manage our money better so that it
didn't manage us. We should have reserves.
They shouldn't be complaining. After all, this is only a government
DesNews, How many times do you have to be reminded it's not a
bill, it's not called "Obamacare", and the Dems aren't digging
in their heels? It's a law, adjudicated at every possible level including
the SCOTUS and re-election of the POTUS who advocated for it, it is called the
Affordable Care Act, and the Dems are merely doing precisely what has been done
by every single prior legislature in our Nation's history, nothing more and
nothing less. There is no negotiating to be had; if Americans truly do not like
a law then we will lobby our representatives and/or elect new ones to undue said
law - that is how our Nation works. Everyone who can count knows that,
currently, that is not possible so, if the ACA is truly as terrible as
conservatives claim, then the democratic process will ultimately undue it. Stop pretending as though there are two sides to a problem involving a
bill; the lack of integrity in your reporting is becoming a downright shame and
it reflects poorly on our Church's reputation. Please, stop it.
This does not sound like the AFGE I was part of when I worked at HAFB. I thing
the Union was added to confuse the public that employees frustrations as union
motivated chaos by the left wing radicals in this state. The AFGE
union does not condone or promote this kind of demonstration by federal
employees. Which makes these people standing outside the base not governemt
employees but democrat pretenders being paid to stand there and hold signs. It
is against the law for federal employees to demonstrate of go on strike and each
employee by civil duty and law obeys this. The real protestors unwilling to
sacrifice and be self sufficient for sound government and accountability are in
the White House in Washington DC.The Obama machine is infamous for
hiring protestors and out to punish and lie to the american people by all means
available and this is more proof of his incompetence. All federal employees know
their jobs are at risk and can be terminated or laid off at any time, its inbred
in their employment agreement understanding. Any federal employee promoted in
the news media is a plant, a lie, a fake, a hoax.
When you have disagreements about existing laws - you resolve them without
putting so many people at risk. The Republican Party for the most part has not
learned this. History will not let them forget. It will be interesting to see,
in a year or so, what the Republican Party looks like.
As a lifelong Republican and Utahn, I am totally apposed to this government
shutdown led by my own party. I am now realizing what a big mistake we made in
electing Mike Lee, who has become one of the three most radical senators in our
nation. He is an embarrassment to our fine state. Lets get the government
running again and then address our spending problems and fix the few things that
are wrong with Obamacare. Time to get out of this mess and move on.
What about the generational effect of social security, and Medicare? When are
the republicans, or democrats, going to pull their heads out of the sand about
these programs? Social security and Medicare are the two biggest
expenses items in our national budget. But no politician will talk about reining
the programs in to prevent their bankruptcy. It all comes down to power,
and being re-elected. No politician will stick their necks out to discuss
changes in these programs, You cannot be opposed to Obama care, and
support Medicare, they are both national health insurance.I wonder how
supportive the tea partiers would be of the government shut down, if it effected
their social security payments. It’s easy to support something when
it is not affecting you directly.
Stalwart Sentinal,I appreciate your comments above. I am not LDS. As
the DN is church owned, I usually look to it and the comments in it to see what
the LDS church truly teaches. It seems extremely right-wing.
I hope and pray all you decent working people who have been furloughed thansk to
Senator Mike Lee will remember his actions in congress come next electiion
time!. As this government shutdown promoted by Senator Lee does more damage to
our already fragile economy, I hope the voters in Utah will remember who we
elected the last time - and learn from our experience. Utah and the United
States deserves to have representatives in Congress who are not radical
extremists who take the government hostatge over their narrow sighted agendas.
And no, I am not a liberal Democrat. I am a native Utahn with the same
conservative background and faith as the majority of you all in Utah. We can
and must do better in choosing our elected officials.
THIS the America the Tea-Party has always dreamed about...A virtual
Republican Utopia, Government stripped down and shutdown to only the
bare essentials.Every Republicans should be dancing the streets
right now! They wanted it, the got it....
Get real. The debate on health care should be whether the states or the federal
government should administer a health care system similar to every other
industrialized country. We don't have to reinvent the wheel but fine tune
the systems in the UK, Canada, Germany, South Korea, Japan and other such
countries. It is not the time to whine about fairness on taxes. If
the country breaks up the wealthy may find it unpleasant as well. Let those who
can, pay more taxes. Get back to the tax status during Clinton's term. His
character may be a stench in our nostrils but his economic policies were the
best since FDR.
Japan has obligatory health insurance and capped prices. Works fine. It should be illegal to shut down the government when you admit it because you
don't have the votes to change a legally passed law. I want to
SUE the republicans for damages! They have no legal right to do this!
Need a reason to drop the caucus system in Utah? Senator Mike Lee.
Sentinel,How many times do you need to be reminded it is commonly known as
obamacare, it is opposed by a majority of the population, and the dems have
voted to shut down the government to protect this unpopular and unjust law that
was passed through lies and back-room deals? As for the dems only
doing their duty to enforce it; that is a fallacy. BO is NOT enforcing the
employer portion, he delayed doing so. Where in the 2400+ pages is he given the
authority to delay the employer portion? As for the dems enforcing
every single piece of legislation, you mean how BO refuses to deport or secure
the border as required by our immigration laws?Or how holder refused
to enforce laws against voter intimidation? How many times do YOU
need to be reminded how BO and his cabal turn a blind eye to laws THEY do not
like?Gotold, meckofahess, redshirt007The GOP voted to keep the
government open, the dems voted to close it. Please do not be duped by their
distortions. The blame lies with harry, not leeFDRfan,You
mean FDR's policies that KEPT us in depression?
Love the "Its the Law" line I KEEP HEARING. They draw it like a gun.To these same people: Remember back when the law was 'abortions are
illegal'? Did they say well, thats the law--and we're going to follow
it. NOPE. They fought for what they wanted. A lot of people
didn't agree. But they changed the law.How is it different now?
As a conservative, I am deeply appalled by this shutdown. It's
about as tactically complex as a terrorist who just cares about killing as many
people as possible disregarding who actually gets hurt. How many terrorists gain
popular support by bombing weddings and marketplaces? It's time
to adopt strategies that work, and stop thinking that ideaologies trump human
Senator Lee considers them casualties in the tea party war. He said he wanted to
stop a future (potential) train wreck. Using his analogy, the tea party is
blowing up bridges in front of the train already enacted onto the tracks.
Perhaps a few here, just maybe, will see both parties for what they are,
ineffectual Power brokers. Democrats, if you are pointing the finger at the
Republicans, go get a life; Republicans, if you are pointing the finger at the
Democrats, go get a life. The followers of either party are simpletons that are
so naive to defy description. So, where does it leave us? Perhaps you will
begin to look to God first, instead of a political parties. Perhaps you will
start looking in the mirror before pointing the finger at your hated political
enemy. Folks, if you think this is going to stop; it won't. Anytime you
see a unified front in Washington, just know, whatever it is, it will ultimately
affect you negatively. It's time to grow up. I don't care whether
you love Mike Lee while glorifying Harry Reid or Barack Obama or vice-versa,
better wake up. Both parties refuse to work together and both parties are
corrupt. Don't be so naive.
Let me see if I understand. The Affordable Care Act passed. President Obama was
reelected. This means that it was a majority of Congress and Americans who were
happy with the results. It is the duty of Congress to vote on a budget, but
instead, it has shut down federal government. Members are unreachable. Congress
is punishing Americans for hurt egos and ideology differences (to name just two
reasons). Speaker Boehner (and others who think like him) love power, exhibit
appallingly incorrigible behavior, and all the while, our economy is suffering.
Our sons and daughters, husbands and wives, brothers and sisters, and mothers
and fathers are unemployed or close to losing jobs. And that's helping the
American people and the image of our country? Unfortunately, Congress has become
our nation's most threatening enemy.
@MayfairCity, UtLove the "Its the Law" line I KEEP
HEARING. To these same people: Remember back when the law was
'abortions are illegal'? Did they say well, thats the law--and
we're going to follow it.NOPE. They fought for what they
wanted. A lot of people didn't agree. But they changed the law.How is it different now?9:11 a.m. Oct. 3, 2013========== Um yes, they DID obey the laws. It was the law and it was
obeyed. And, They didn't shutdown the Government and hold
the entire country hostage until they go the Constitutionally required votes to
change those laws. That's how our Constitutional Government
works in America.Get the votes, and change the laws. What we
see happening now is extortion and a blatant trampling of the Constitution.
I was wondering when these Federal workers usually get paid. Did they receive a
monthly pay check at the end of September, or are they waiting for it still?
My guess is that those on monthly pay were paid already at the end
of September, and their next check will be at the end of October. At least I
hear that usually monthly payroll is disbursed at the end of the month. Can
someone elucidate so far as actual examples of federal workers are concerned?Anyway I expect that the shutdown will be over long before, or at least
by, the end of the month, and that they will be paid and not be docked anything
in their pay. Information please.I'm thinking that no one is
out of money yet, based on this standoff over the cost of the new national
insurance plan, no one on the federal payroll, no one who wouldn't have
been anyway. For those who are missing "services" it would
be a completely different thing, but most complaints seem to be about the
inconvenience for those who administer federal programs, and fewer about
recipients of various entitlements.
what is interesting is these people are being paid but they want us to believe
they will not be paid. obama and his followers are desiring to fool the country
into a false security. the affordable health care / obamacare is the same
program where so many have been fooled otherwise. i do not trust the fork
