    Sept. 24, 2013 9:43 a.m.

Here is the reality that byu fans try to avoid:

Your players are not very good.

Yes, a couple are good. But it takes more than a couple good players to be a good team. It takes dozens of them.

Guess who won the head to head AND average star recruiting war between Utah and byu the last 4 years?

    Utah
    Utah
    Utah
    Utah

Guess who won on the field the last 4 years?

    Utah
    Utah
    Utah
    Utah

    Coincidence? No.

Bronco thinks he can take a team of mostly one and two star nobodies and talk to them about execution and spirit and honor and somehow they'll turn into national title contenders.

His many years at byu prove that strategy isn't working.

Nick Saban wouldn't be winning titles with byu's "athletes"

  • 2013 Ute Seniors SWEEP byU 4-0 Ogden, UT
    Sept. 24, 2013 9:46 a.m.

Of all recruits who have had offers from byu and Utah the last 4 years, more have picked Utah each year.

The great majority have listed our Pac 12 membership as a big reason for picking Utah.

That does not bode well for byu.

Utah from here on out will ALWAYS be part of the Pac 12. byu will not.

If bronco can't even get most of the Mormon kids he wants(as he hasn't last 4 years as they've picked UTAH), byu is in trouble.

    And I love it!

Well said. I like your attitude.

  • Christopher B Ogden, UT

    1-2 start.

Your quest ended in Virgnia, hours after it started

Your Heisman caliber QB has the worst passer rating in the entire nation

You lost to your rival for the fourth time in a row

Van Noy, Hoffman, Riley Nelson, Taysom Hill, and so many others will NEVER know what it feels like to beat their rivals

More head to head recruits have picked UTAH Every year since our Pac 12 invite, which shows your recruiting stronghold among Mormons and strong byu families is long gone!

In the last 4 years you have one(Utah state) win against end of year top 25 teams?

    The Big 12 hasn't called.

And bronco still thinks he's building a national title program!

    LOL!

Where are all of the Utah fans who, after the Alabama game, claimed that the Utes could compete with anybody, and who, immediately after Utah's invitation to the PAC, claimed that Utah would soon be winning PAC championships and playing in the Rose Bowl?

Now all we hear are whiny excuses about how tough the PAC is and how it will take years, perhaps decades, for the Utes to recruit enough talent to be competitive in a big boy conference.

The truth is, you're all talk, but no walk.

Call us the first time you beat a PAC team with a winning record.

  • Mick Murray, Utah
    Sept. 24, 2013 10:42 a.m.

    To the above comments-

Don't you all brag about your PAC 12 membership? Well try and do something with it. You are a member of the " mighty PAC 12" but all you can brag about over the last 4 years is beating byu. Sad.
Both you and your coaches should concentrate more on your PAC 12 rivals. It is not going to save kyle's job anymore just to beat byu. Prove to us that you can win at least 2 PAC 12 games this year.
The sad sad fact is that there isn't any good football being played in Utah this year and you have just won the " bowl of below average."

  • Christy B Salt Lake City, Utah

Utah only beat BYU by a touchdown, and, as has been the case in 14 of the last 17 contests, the game wasn't decided until the last play of the game.

Bottom line, regardless of how you want to characterize it, a good team beating another good team, or a bad team beating another bad team, the two teams are very evenly matched.

Just like last year(14 missed field goals, hurts doesn't it?)

And the year before(54-10, hurts doesn't it?)

Remind us which team went bowling in 2012, and which team spent the holidays playing couch potato.

Remind us which team ended the 2011 season ranked in the Top 25, and which team didn't receive a single vote in either poll.

We realize that BYU is the standard by which U judge Utah's success, but one game does not a season make.

BYU fans need not worry about what we do or don't in the Pac 12. Until you can beat us, You should worry about fixing your own program. We don't need to prove anything to BYU, Our talking has been done on the field. The Y is so jealous of our Pac 12 membership, and it's just killing you, to realize that the 80's and 90's are long gone, and not coming back any time soon! We don't play again for two years so don't call us, just go away.Ute fans thank you, for your tears are Delicious!

Since Utah is the BIG brother why dont you go play with you cool friends in the pac 12 and leave the little brother alone, while the little bother plays with his friend on ESPN. If your team is so much better then BYU then move on to the other rivils in the pac 12. If you got to comment on very game that little bother is playing, saying how great Utah is, that just shows how little you think of your team.

  • Yayhoo Logan, UT

Chris B (and whatever other name he chooses as his name of the day),

As usual, I can see based on your comments that the BYU game and rivalry mean more to you than you care to admit. Why else would you spend so much time in worrying about the number of stars that some of your players have and in comparing the two programs? The Utes played a good game and deserved to win. They didn't dominate, but they won. It doesn't necessarily mean they are the better team, but they had a better game. The rest of the season will determine what kind of team each program has for the year. Texas A&M beat your beloved Alabama last year, but Alabama ended up national champs.

Best of luck to both teams for the rest of the year (despite some of the fans)!

Thanks for summing up my feeling, the loss hurts, but I am still a fan and plan this weekend to take my son to his first BYU games. And yes ChrisB. I am taking to this games so my son first BYU is a win, hate to have taken him to last weeks game.
I do have some hope that BYU will go to a bowl as will Utah and maybe play each other again so the sr class can have one last chance. By then Hill might be able to throw the ball and someone besides hoffmen and thompson will catch it. Apo better step up soon or his footdays are numbered.
I also beleive that BYUs best football days are ahead of us if we as fan can keep our cool and allow Hill and the rest of the O to get better and gain some expereince.

Who says we have to wait until 2016 to avenge the loss? BYU will prove their superiority on December 14 in the Huntsman Center.

Yes, the football loss was painful, and losing four in a row is agonizing; but there's more to life than football - there's basketball, volleyball, rugby, soccer and the list goes on.

I know some who think that football is the only sport (and if you're at Utah, maybe it is), but I loved watching BYU win the NC in rugby, and compete for the NC in men's volleyball, and I even watched the women make an incredible run in soccer last year, and who didn't enjoy watching Davies, Haws and Carlino play in MSG on their NIT journey.

I'm not trying to deflect the football losses, but there other sports, there's academics, there's social.

From someone who attended the school up North for two years, and transferred to BYU; there is no comparison from an overall standpoint.

Good for Davison Cheney! Wouldn't expect anything more or less!

Good luck to the Cougars for the rest of this year and the next two years.

Despite all the shananigans that go with it, I will genuinely miss the rivalry game the next two years. I say that without the slightest hint of sarcasm. I would rather see the Utes play BYU the next two seasons than Michigan, even with the home-and-home arrangement involving the Big House, and I would much rather see the Utes play BYU than Fresno State.

Thankfully, the teams will get back together in a couple of years--and maybe indefinitely after that. Also, we can hope for a bowl game match-up during one of the two years of the break.

The bad stuff that relates to the rivalry involves about 2% of the fans; the good stuff about 98% in my estimation.

Long live the rivalry! And great fans like the author of the article above.

It wasn't BYU fans who claimed that they were moving on way back in 2010, only to be here, still trolling BYU blogs, more than 3 years later.

U haven't proven anything except for how to be PAC 12 losers. The Utah men, which U sing to proudly about, haven't finished out of the PAC basement in ANY PAC 12 sport.

The truth is, BYU would be far more competitive across the board in the PAC 12 than the Utes have been.

"Who says we have to wait until 2016 to avenge the loss? BYU will prove their superiority on December 14 in the Huntsman Center. "

*shrugs* Utah cares more about gymnastics than basketball anyway so you can just hand it back January 11th.

There is one amusing scenario. If Utah finishes 6th in the PAC-12 (not implausible though they probably have to beat Wazzu, Colorado, and two of Arizona, Arizona State, and UCLA to get there) they might end up facing BYU in a bowl game.

Hey, I'm one Cougar fan who admits his team stinks and you guys are better. Our QB is dead last in the USA in efficiency and can't hit Y mountain with a short pass.

But do us a favor Ute fans...really.. Move...ON...Stop worrying about "little brother" (I could care less what my little brothers do) and go on and conquer the PAC 12. Make us proud. Give us indirect bragging rights that at least the team that beats us every year also is top tier team in their conference.

Go to the Rose Bowl once in a while. Play a full schedule of quality teams like you have and win. Beating Alabama was great, but you did it from the MWC. I won't cheer for you but I think you guys deserve to win and want to see you really do it, rather than just have old BYU to talk about. Go (away) UTES!!!

I love it when Utah fans look down their noses at the lowly, Independent Cougars and then have to rely on beating BYU as their only quality wins since joining the PAC.

When BYU was dominating the Utes in the 70s and 80s, BYU was dominating the Utes across the board in overall records, conference championships, national rankings, national awards, and head-to-head.

The Utes have NEVER dominated the Cougars across the board, EVER!

The Utes weren't even good enough to crack the AP Top 25 until 1994. Bronco has managed to do that four times since 2006.

During the Bronco/Kyle era, BYU has won more conference championships, had more Top 25 finishes, and finished with more 10+ win seasons than the Utes.

What part of finishing with a worse record and lower ranking do you not understand?

yeah, we know about coed skiing, but since there are only two power conference schools, and only four FBS schools total that compete in coed skiing, NOBODY except the Utes cares about a sport that's so inconsequential that it's dominated by the Denver Pioneers.

    Well said, Davison!

Win or lose, BYU always be my school and always be my team. The bombardment of anti-BYU comments on EVERY article written about BYU make me smile. What the ute fans fail to realize is that unlike the bandwagon phenomenon brought about by one Urban Meyer, BYU fans are fans for very distinct reasons, "winning football games" being one of many and not even the greatest. If that were the case, then we would be cheering for utah for the past 4 years.

No, they fail to realize that all of the breath wasted on their abusive insults and acidic comments will never "convince" BYU fans to change colors. In fact, the hatred tends to make us stronger. They fail to realize that our fandom is just as much about supporting the core values of the institution and all it stands for as it is about winning the Deseret Dual. It's about far more than a great education or conference affiliation. Teams cycle thru wins and losses, but Cougar fans remain loyal, strong and true. Flame on, utes! Go Cougs!

I have dated byU co-eds, and was even married to a byU grad. In my mind, the U is the far superior place to go to school and to prepare you for reality. But that is me and I don't pretend to think that all people should feel the same way. You make what you want to make out of every situation in life. Let me get this straight. If Utah is 7 points better tha BYU, and if they switched schedules, then it gets very interesting. BYU would have lost by 3 to USU ( Utah won by 4), beaten Weber St., lost to OSU and would now be 1-3 and staring into the teeth of a difficult PAC-12 schedule. I wonder how that would turn out? Utah would have beaten Virginia by 4 ( same reasoning), beaten Texas, and be 3-0 facing the remainder of BYU's schedule. I'm thinking 9-3 or better would be a real possibility. Food for thought.

  • spokaloo Adin, CA
    Sept. 24, 2013 8:21 p.m.

The fact that I see Utah fans using the beating of BYU as a validation that they are a "good team" shows that Utah still has an inferiority complex. If my team had beaten another team 9 of 12 (regardless of the fact that 9 of those games basically came down to the last play), was in a BCS conference (no such designation after this year), and my team was so superior, I wouldn't waste a second commenting on their articles. I just don't get it...Utah fans have earned the right to let it go when Cougar fans talk trash. Yet for some strange reason the comments here come across as a need to justify. I just don't get it. My only guess is that's all Utah fan can hang their hat on. Because since backing into the pac-12, they have done nothing else. BYU right now is not a good team. They haven't been for 3 years. Congrats...you squeaked by a mediocre BYU in the last two years by 10 points total.

I'd enjoy seeing the U and Y in the same bowl game. Both teams will have mediocre seasons from here on out - mark it down, Chris B.

We could win three of the following games if we play well, but I don't see more:

UCLA (because we're at home, but unlikely)
U of A (at Tucson and they're 3-0, so unlikely)
USC (if they don't play like they did against WSU, but this is one we need, so a toss up),
ASU (if they play like last week, but they've got the same hold over us that we have over the Y so a toss up)
WSU (if they don't play like they did at USC, but this is a game we need to win)
CU (another loss to the Buffaloes would really hurt and we're at home, so I'll predict a win).

We lose two more against Stanford and Oregon.

Realistically, we finish at 6-6. That could put us in the Hunger Games with BYU.

Utah is a good team... when playing BYU. I've always said that if Utah could play every game like it plays BYU it would have 2-4 more wins per season. I live in PAC 12 country. I have PAC 12 north fans all around me and trust me, Utah is considered a decent team and not a good team or even a top tier PAC 12 team. In fact they moan that the south is weakening and hurting the conference at large. Arizona teams have been absent for over a decade. UCLA been absent for over a decade. USC is the only team revered in the south and they are on their way down. If I were in the PAC 12, I wouldn't want to face Oregon, Stanford every year. Utah is a very blessed program to be invited by the PAC 12. But they are considered equivalent to Arizona schools and one step up from WSU,Colorado...after football, they add very little to the conference and in most cases detract from the conference. I accept that they have about 20 years of taking 2 for every one that the Cougs get. True blue through and through!

Congrats...you squeaked by a mediocre BYU in the last two years by 10 points total.

    ------------

Squeaked by? Utah hasn't trailed in 8 straight quarters. We're also 4-0, so Utah has outscored BYU by a total of 55 points.

    * Our mediocre team, with an injured QB, needed 5 minutes of good play to beat BYU (2010)
    * Our average team beat BYU by 44 points (2011)
    * Even our worst team in 9 years was able to beat BYU (2012)

79Ute: "The Hunger Games Bowl" Very funny! I like it. I will be hoping for the Hunger Games here on out.

I really hope we get a second chance at U this year. It could be the medicine I need to get out of the depression of 4 straight losses. Though if we lose again...

    GO COUGS!!!

    I'm still Blue too

    Christopher B,
I find it funny that with everything going Utah's way you still feel the need to read and comment on every BYU article, usually the very first one to comment in fact!!! Good luck in your Big Boy conference the rest of the season, 0-1 this year and 7-13 over all so far!!!

    Go Cougs!!!
    Go Utes!!!
    Go Aggies except against BYU!!!

    Carson,
You are commenting on a BYU article in a Pro-BYU newspaper and you tell us to go away? That is just to funny!!!

    CougFaninTx,

You are right to bring up other sports besides football. When the team you always predict to win succumbs, yet again, to the Utes, it's nice to deflect the pain.

But you conveniently left out a few sports:

Women's gymnastics. Despite BYU having a pretty decent program they just have no chance against Red Rocks.
Skiing. It's nearly as fringe as rugby.
Hockey. The reining PAC-8 champions just rocked BYU this past weekend, 6-2. Of course, you didn't notice because you were busy watching more popular sports like Men's indoor volleyball.
Yeah, the NIT is great. In fact, fans of Utah's women's basketball saw them advance to the WNIT championship this past year.
Also, Utah's men's bball is back on it's way up...wouldn't surprise me if this was the year BYU sees its steak end.

Look, BYU is a good choice of school for people like you, no question, but it's not the perfect fit for everyone. Ask Spencer Hadley.

So, enjoy the men's volleyball match-up on byuTV. I prefer to wait until its over to watch Studio C.

    Thomas Jefferson,

I like your well thought out posts. A BYU fan predicting Utah to go 4-8 is nothing new.

But at this point, your prediction of BYU finishing 9-3 is pretty bold.

That means they'll have win 8 of their next 9. Look, it's possible, but I wouldn't predict that to happen no matter how blue-colored my glasses were. That's like filling out your March Madness bracket and putting BYU in the Final Four. Pretty darn tough.Particularly when you see how they played on the road at Virginia and how they looked against a motivated rival in Utah.

Why do I bring that up?

BYU must still play at Utah State, Wisconsin, and Notre Dame. Teams that are felt to be better than Virginia.

I'll give you MTSU, Idaho State, and Nevada. But that only brings BYU to four wins. To make it to seven, they'd have to beat Georgia Tech AND Boise St. at home and beat a Houston team on the road.

Then they'd have to win 2 of the aforementioned ND, UW, or USU games. Again pretty darn hard.

    Cheers.

Utah was 7 points better last Saturday, congrats on winning but the season isn't one game. We will see where both these teams are at the end of the season and then we will see who really is the better team. The better measuring stick is an entire season or entire body of work. One game early in the season where you basically made one or two more plays then your opponent doesn't really prove your the better team overall. Right now Utah is 7 points better then BYU but what if by seasons end BYU has improved a lot and Utah just levels off or regresses? This is why you wait until the final results then the picture will be clear as to who the better team really is.

We are all well aware of BYU fans stance that the Utah game has no meaning, or bearing on how good the two teams are. I realize thats about the only fall back position you have when your team loses to it's rival over, and over, and over, and over again. Whether Utah wins by 7, or 44, the BYU fan M.O. remains the same. Man up, and give credit to Utah; truely the better team!

    @CougarOnTheProwl

Right now we are 3-1 and you are 2-2. Better hope Texas and Virginia are the real deal.

    @frugalfly

You live in Provo because if the PAC-12 South is as weak you claim PAC-12 overall wouldn't be the 2nd best conference behind SEC.

    @ThomasJefferson

"During the course of a season you will loss a game you should have won (Virgina) and you will win a game you should have lost (Texas) and the remainder of the season will play out as it should..." 7-5.

Good luck teaching Hill to throw. If you can then you might be able to save your season.

BYU is still the superior team for more than four years in a row. At least twelve years for sure.

...I wonder if cougar fans realize how pathetic they sound when they try to spiin the fact they consistently lose to Utah.

Arrogance really does mess with people's ability to reason.
