    byu fans -

Can you now see why we decided to go play fresno for a couple years?

They are a better program than you.

We already are dominating the recruiting war in Utah(see head to head and average stars won EVERY year since our Pac 12 invite), so it makes sense also go to play in front on an important California recruiting base.

    2013 Seniors 4-0 SWEEP!

How embarrassing that Van Noy, Hoffman, Riley Nelson, Jake Heaps, Jamaal Williams, Taysom Hill, and so many others will NEVER know what its like to beat their rivals!

How is a pretty bad 1-2 BYU team with no QB still #40 and only one spot behind the Utes in this ranking? Yeah that doesn't make any sense...

BYU and USU's rankings should be switched.

I've said 3 things since the beginning of the year:

    1. Utah would beat byu and usu - CHECK
    2. Utah would go 8-4 or 9-3(almost a guarantee at this point)
    3. The winner of the Utah/UCLA game would win the Pac 12 South

The jealousy in provo and logan is palpable.

"Utah State checks in at No. 55 after losing a close game against USC in The Coliseum. Utah made one of the biggest moves of the week jumping 13 spots to come in at No. 39 after holding off BYU, 20-13. BYU dropped six spots to come in at No. 40 after its lackluster performance against the Utes on Saturday."

If Taysom doesn't improve his completion % to at 65%, BYU won't be bowling this year.

USU shot themselves in the foot in losing a close one in the Coliseum.

Utah played better than BYU and deserved the win, but it remains to be seen if the Utes can beat a decent PAC 12 opponent.

I agree with Chris B on one point, the winner of UCLA/utes will win the PAC 12 South. Problem is for Chris, it won't be close. UCLA wins easily. I don't get it, moderators. Your guidelines say you want to promote an atmosphere of respect, using the metaphor of addressing a room full of people and then passing the microphone. You even go so far as to shoot down comments that are "disruptive."

Why oh why do you let Chris B and his multiple sock puppets post 7-8 comments that are designed purely to get a rise out of people?

Don't worry, other Ute fans, I do not lump him in with you. You are by and large good folk who have the common decency and respect to be gracious with your lot in the PAC-12 and your wins over USU and BYU.

UCLA 2007 WAS NOT RANKED at the end of the season, which is the ONLY ranking that counts.

In fact, after losing to Utah, the Bruins dropped completely out of the poll and finished with a losing 6-7 record after losing to BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl.

You beat a team that finished the season with a losing record, not a Top 25 team.

It's laughable how Utah fans will claim that BYU 1984 didn't beat a single ranked team, even though BYU beat #3-ranked Pittsburgh in their opening game of the season, yet Utah somehow beat a "ranked" UCLA team in 2007. The inconsistency of the kids on the hill is hilarious.

    bacpacn:

I'm afraid that you are the laughable, inconsistent one. Pitt was unranked at the end of the 1984 season and BYU hadn't beat a team that was ranked at season's end. So by your own standard, with "the ONLY ranking that counts", BYU indeed backed into a championship. That let to the Bowl Coalition/Alliance/BCS to make sure that teams with weak schedules wouldn't play a crappy team in a bowl game and get voted in by default.

  • Guam_Bomb BARRIGADA, GU
    Sept. 23, 2013 11:26 p.m.

I agree with Bronco on one note. He needs to stick with Hill. But Hill will not improve until he has time to throw the ball. The fact that he was sacked 5 times shows that the O-Line is still not up to par in the pass game. I was amazed at Hills speed as he tried to outrun the Utah rush.

This is nothing new for BYU. Jake Heaps got the blame two years ago and Riley Nelson got it last year. All three of them ran for their lives in the Utah game and were vilified by the faithful who don't seem to understand that quarterbacks need to have time to pass.

I was looking at the roster and BYU's starting line is averaging less than 300 LBS. Where's the beef?

  • Guam_Bomb BARRIGADA, GU
    Sept. 23, 2013 11:36 p.m.

I thought the article misrepresented the USU game. It was a close game throughout. Utah States defense was insanely good considering they had their heels on their own goal line the entire second half. USC pulled off a squeaker. USU was definitely more athletic, but USU's defense played extremely well. BYU better get ready for Utah State because the Aggies are hungry and won't forget last year.

  • gdog3finally West Jordan, Utah
    Sept. 23, 2013 11:41 p.m.

    @backpacn

I mostly agree. Except the 'inconsistency' is everywhere. The contradiction you pointed out is likely true to a small number of Ute fans, but the combination of being ignorant and knowledgeable about Pitt or anyone on BYU's 1984 schedule for them is not.

UCLA was ranked #11 when Utah thumped them, but I knew before the game that UCLA was vulnerable and not what the polls wanted them to be. Same with Texas this year for BYU. Beating #15 Texas was nice but that ranking was the beauty pageant part of college football. It's not just the BCS that is corrupt. The ranking system is also a farce.

BYU has a brand name, tradition, and fan following that gets them ranked when they sometimes shouldn't be as well. Utah beats BYU 54-10 in 2011 and finishes 8-5 with a PAC 12 schedule. Yet at 10-3, BYU fans bragged about being ranked come seasons end. Thing is BYU squeaks past Central Florida and USU on their home turf to go to 5-3 (nowhere near ranked then). BYU wins their last 5 games against Idaho, Idaho State, New Mexico State, Hawaii, and Tulsa. Suddenly they're ranked.

  • Sports Nutz Smithfield, UT

Yes John, the utes beat the AGGIES and by the end of the season it will be their only win against a team with a winning record. Where are the utes other wins coming from? Seriously, where? UCLA-L, Stanford-L, the Arizonz schools...L-L, Oregon..yeah right. Washington State? Maybe the other Cougars can get you or maybe it's your 4th win, toss a coin. You should beat Colorado but everyone remembers the big choke a home so it's not a gimme (maybe for Colorado). Home for the bowl season again.......

Who said they were ranked a11 at the end of the season? You may want to proof read, prior to positng. What's really laughable is losing to your so called "little brother" from up North, 4 years in a row. Then you have to go back to stats from 2007 and jump on the other PAC 12 teams band wagon and hope they can do, what your team can't: beat Utah. Actually, it's not laughable, but certainly sad and pathetic!

The ONLY requirement for winning a major college football national championship is to finish #1 in the final poll.

Air Force(8-4) finished #24 in the final AP poll, though technically unranked because the 1984 poll only ranked the Top 20, the Falcons still finished higher in the final poll than Utah's bcs bowl opponent, Pittsburgh(8-4), which finished #25.

For all their whining about weak schedules, the Utes only beat three winning, 7-5 teams to bust the 2004 bcs.

BYU no more backed into their 1984 championship than Utah backed into their 2004 bcs bowl.

  • SportsFan Orem, UT
    Sept. 24, 2013 8:35 a.m.

    JohnInSLC

So by your own standard of "not playing anybody", Utah backed into their first bcs bowl -the Utes didn't beat a single decent team during the entire regular season.

    Texas A&M(7-5)
    Arizona(3-8)
    Utah St(3-8)
    Air Force(5-6)
    New Mexico(7-5)
    No Carolina(6-6)
    UNLV(2-9)
    SDSU(4-7)
    Colorado St(4-7)
    Wyoming(7-5)
    BYU(5-6)

Utah's toughest regular season opponent was at home versus mediocre Texas A&M(7-5)

7 teams with losing records, 3 teams with winning records, 1 6-6 team, no team with better than a 7-5 record

    Overall 53-72

Not even as good as the first 11 opponents on BYU's 1984 schedule.

btw, if BYU's National Championship was really the catalyst for the Bowl Coalition/Alliance, why wasn't the Bowl Coalition started until 1992, EIGHT years later. Obviously, BYU's 1984 National Championship wasn't nearly as big a factor as our jealous friends on the hill pretend it to be.

  • Speed_Altitude Centerville, UT
    Sept. 24, 2013 8:40 a.m.

Utah haters need to figure out what most college football coaches already know. You need to talk up the other teams that you play. Then if you win or loose, it makes your team look great or ok, respectively. So if you were a BYU fan would you rather say you lost by 7 to a 3-9 team or a top 20 team? Yeah, go think about that for a while. Travis Wilson said after the game that BYU is the best defense they have played against so far this year. So by the argument above it makes his offense look good while giving BYU some compliments. So as you tear down Utah you also tear down your own team. hmmmmmm

I have always pulled for Utah when they weren't playing USU, but people like Chris B make me want the utes to lose every game just to keep him from taking over every college football story with his comments slamming USU and byu. I like how fans talk down others fans conference or team especially if they won or lose to them. All it does is make your team look worse if they are beating or losing to bad teams. For the Ute's you will want the MWC like USU and even BYU to do good (even though it is hard for me to say BYU), or the wins against them will not really count for anything. Food for thought.

  • JonA Ogden, UT

Utah will certainly have to execute flawlessly to even have a chance at beating UCLA. The PAC-12 is no joke this year! Stanford, Oregon, UCLA, and Washington especially look extremely solid. Luckily, we don't face Wash this year and ASU looks a lot more beatable now after their Stanford game than they did before. Utah needs to beat Colorado and then two of the following to go bowling: ASU, Arizona, Wash St., and USC. They are very unlikely to beat Stanford, Oregon, and even UCLA.

Utah is much improved from last year! But that may not show up in their final record, as their schedule is one of the toughest in the nation. But the future is bright and hopefully they can pull off an upset of one of the PAC-12 powerhouses. The most unlikely is Oregon, but man oh man wouldn't that be sweet!

  • JonA Ogden, UT
    Sept. 25, 2013 9:21 a.m.

BYU fans still talking about 1984 and Utah fans still talking about two BCS bowls really need to move on! None of those players play anymore. It was great for both teams, but move on already and live in the present. Both programs have a lot of work to do to get back to national respectibility. I seriously get so sick of 1984, 2004, and 2008. They were great; but move on. Who cares who they played?! Worry about Middle Tenn and UCLA!

The main reason I wish the BYU/Utah rivalry wasn't going away for two years isn't because I'll miss watching it, but rather I'll have to listen to speculation as to which team is better rather than having it settled on the field. Trust me, these message boards are going to be so much worse next year! Both sides claiming their team is better and we can't prove who's right...that's going to be so annoying!

BYU looked like a deer caught by the headlights with the defense Utah showed. After talking to those who were at LES and reviewing the film none of us could find a hold or block that negated the Kickoff return for a touchdown that was called back. Maybe either we're blind or the hold didn't happen. The throw down of the BYU receiver was an obvious pass interference so it looks like Utah may have caught some big breaks that effected the outcome of the game. That Pac 12 crew should have been on probation after the fiasco with the ASU vs Wisconsin game.
