    @ Lifelong Ute

I couldn't agree with you more.

    @Fred T

I am not quite sure how you say that it wasn't taken in religious context. I am not aware of anything else that uses baptism except for faithful and religious purposes.

    @TedH

I see what you are saying, however, this is not the mind set and opinion of all Ute fans.

This should not have happened. Blechen is a great player, I love the passion with which he plays. But the kid has sure made some poor judgements over his time at the U.

But as I said I agreed with Lifelong Ute. Whit needs to quit covering for his guys and have them start taking the fall. I know leaders take it for their men, but these are kids who still need direction. And if he doesn't get a handle on it, these are the only players your program will attract and it will only set the program up for a fall. And I would hate to see that.

    Go BRUINS!!!!

    1. Honesty(Good one)
    2. Treat women with respect(good one)
    3. No stealing
    4. No drugs
    5. No DUI's.

Are you kidding me? Those are their core values? Way to shoot for the stars!

I accept Kyle's and Jake's explanation that this was not intended to be a slam against any religion.

Some of the other things I've witnessed at the U obviously were intended to slam a particular religion, such as the time a "special edition" of the Daily Chrony that questioned the validity of many tenants of the LDS faith was distributed in RES prior to a BYU-Utah game.

Mocking LDS beliefs happens frequently at the U, but I don't think that is what was happening in this particular case.

Where's the story about the photo of Lucky Radley, Jake Murphy, Trevor Reilly, and another Ute (sorry I don't recognize him) visiting a recently paralyzed teenager in the hospital? After all, that is something that actually happened just a few days ago; much more recently than the other photo. How awesome must that kid feel after he got a visit from some Ute stars? Even though they're very busy, not just with football, but rivalry week and their classes, they still made time to go cheer someone up. I think that's pretty awesome.

While some of these kids make poor choices, they also make some really good choices too. Why do we always need to focus on the bad things? Let's celebrate the good they do and not dwell on the bad ideas.

Also, let us (Mormons) not become one of the those groups of people who get offended over every little thing. We're stronger than that, we've survived much stronger persecution than a couple of college kids doing an ice bath dare that may or may not resemble a baptism.

I suppose you could say the Utes were making a commitment to live a higher life.

But they are football players and there is a reason they're not known for their brains. Just some jocks horsing around.

This will hopefully be a good teaching moment about being sensitive about their actions. If they are stating prayers, rites etc then I would take it as mockery of religion. If they were really just dunking each other, then that's all it is.

If they really want to be baptized, I'm sure they can find a church to take care of that.

Ever unintentionally hurt someone's feelings? That sort of thing is often poor judgment but without malice or ridicule meant. After all, one of the Ute players involved in this thing is LDS himself, so he probably saw it in a self-parody sense (similar to say some of the stuff done by BYU Divine Comedy though of course DC is funnier).

its funny how the game has been tagged " the holy war". it emplies that there are people representing two different religions going to battle. Truth is, most of (not all) the leadership on the football team at the University of Utah is LDS. Most of the team is LDS, and besides BYU, Utah has more returned missionaries on their team than any other DIV 1 school. So in reality if anyone is offended it should be the ENTIRE church membership or anyone who considers that cermony sacred. BYU fans need to quit acting PICKED ON. it wasnt directed at the SCHOOL. Remember BYU you are not the only LDS members out there so quit acting like you are. I dont need you to "defend" me, and it looks like you should focus on members of your own team and how they represent you.

There is no audio, none of you can say for sure that this is a mockery of baptism. The towel on the head could be simply because he didn't want his face on youtube. That is the ice bath because I took a tour of the facility before the OSU game.

Elder Wirthlin had played football for the U during the '30's. Many BYU fans criticized the move as being insincere. I suspect that what is going on here is some fans with the help of the media trying to stir up controversy. The clip was made several weeks ago not this week. This is not a big deal unless YOU make it a big deal.

It's not like our kids are perfect. The kids in the video are about mission age. Remember when pictures of 3 Mormon missionaries surfaced on photobucket who photographed themselves in poses that demeaned the Catholic Church (they were accused of beheading the statue in Colorado and taking pictures holding the head, and preaching to it).
Remember the boys caught throwing bombs at people with the Riverton beauty queen... they were LDS boys, on missions now. Kids sometimes do stupid things. Not just Utes.

I can't see how anyone could keep a straight face when saying they can't tell whether the players were simulating a baptism or not. Obvious is obvious.
There is a reason one of the key people involved covered his face. It wasn't because he was cold or proud of what he was doing.
If the video didn't intend anything at all, then why was it ever posted on You-Tube.
And if the video wasn't offensive, then why did Whittingham feel the need to make an apology statement in behalf of his players?

And lastly... quit trying to make this a BYU football fan thing just to appease yourself in apparent defense of Ute football players who happened to have made the video. Many of those apparently offended are religious people who could care less about football, but do about religious rituals. Show some respect.

A previous comment about the Utah's core values got me thinking. Um...what exactly is the problem with the University of Utah's core values? Honesty, that's a good thing to strive for. Treat women with respect, something all men should strive for, especially college age men. No stealing, that's a commandment. No drugs and no DUI's. What is wrong with that? I think all of these values are (good ones). Consider for a moment that most of these players are over 21 and are not LDS. At least the University is trying to protect others from the potentially harmful affects of drinking, i.e. drinking and driving. If they want to drink alcohol that is their right, unless we want to change our beliefs about free agency. Yes, I am LDS and a die hard Utah football fan. I am disappointed in this content of this video but do not believe it was directed at any one group or religion. In fact I don't think it was directed towards anyone. 1) This is not an ice pool (or at least it's highly doubtful). I have been in quite a few ice pools, and, as a previous post mentioned, ice pools do not produce foam. So Whit's and Jake's explanations don't hold much "water".
    2) If this is an innocent dare, why is one of them hiding his face with a towel?
    3) There is no denying what this looks like. Seriously, if you have any doubt, show the picture, without any context, to ten different people and tell me what they think it looks like.
    4) This was not posted by a BYU fan. It was posted by someone from the U (why did they take it down and why did Whit say it was poor judgment if it was just a simple dare?)

My guess is because if you can't beat a team on the field, the best thing to do is find something -- ANYTHING -- to displace your anger with your won team.S

"Can we actually look at this objectively?" Yes. The video you saw was a 12 second edit of a longer video. You cannot possibly be objective only seeing the 12 seconds. But,

    1) Not technically an "ice" pool, but temperatures in the 40s - 50s. The water takes his breath away as he is going under. Another player is shivering in the water.
    2) Do you know for sure he was "hiding his face"? How many times do you see football players with towels over their heads? Every week at every football game. Hiding was an assumption and speculation on your part. The player's name is Radley, ask him if he was "hiding".
    3) Show the video, within it's context, to ten different people. Showing a picture, taken way out of context, is not a way of being "objective".
    4) How do you know who posted the edited version? This was originally posted in August before Utah even played a game. Are you "objectively" saying this edited video just happened to show up in the media the week of Holy War?

I'm not BLAMING anybody for it. That's my whole point. Blaming and judging are not my job.

It's not my place to judge them (the kids in the video, Utah fans in general, BYU, you name it). But there is a LOT of judging and hate being displayed here. That's the angle of the rivalry I don't like (especially from LDS people who worship the God who said "judge not" and "turn the other cheek").

If you will remember to judge not, and only cast your stone when YOU are perfect... then go for it.

And no... The Utes being to blame for it does not justify reacting the way many are reacting (the hate that's coming out, the judging, the anger, the contention). I think we could all do without it.

It doesn't matter what they were doing or why they were doing it (to me). I'm not perfect yet... so I can't judge them, hate them, or sow contention, and rationalize it saying, "I'm just reacting to what THEY did".

Simply acknowledging what the vidoe portrays doesn't prove that the individual was personnally offended.

When are you going to post the entire video so fans can judge for themselves whether it was really as innocuous as you claim?

While you're out there on the web, take a peak at the Blood Runs Blue comic.

    Enjoy!

I never said we didn't have a rivalry with byU. I also never said that this game is our Super Bowl like KVN did. So, not sure your point there.

The WAC doesn't have to still be in existance for byU to go back to a WAC schedule, it was for making a point. byU has one semi-big-boy schedule this year, them back to bottom half of SOS again in 2014. byU was moved out for Michigan, BTW.

Why do you have to go back decades to try to make a point? We are here now - 2013. Utah is 3-0 in the last 3 games, 7-3 at Provo in that last twenty years.

"How many times have you posted on other teams articles in their main newspaper, or fan blog, or anything else not related to BYU?" I don't post on articles that don't deal directly with Utah. Nice try.

"Hoping for a good clean hard fought game from both sides with no one getting hurt including the fans!" - Amen and ditto.

No rebuttal on the "righteous indignation" claim?

"Simply acknowledging what the vidoe portrays doesn't prove that the individual was personnally offended."

Choosing to interpret the video how you choose doesn't give anybody the right to determine how all Christians should feel or the right to judge. If you choose to be offended by your interpretation and you judge the people involved and the entire University, that is on you. I highly doubt that questioning the moral integrity of such religious people as Kyle Whittingham and Jake Murphy falls under the teachings of the church or of byU.

"When are you going to post the entire video so fans can judge for themselves whether it was really as innocuous as you claim?"

I personally don't have a cached copy of the video because I never thought anybody would think anything of it because of the fact it IS so innocuous. But even if I did, why would I care about how people "judged" it? You have done that already.

"take a peak at the Blood Runs Blue comic"

Why? So that I can show righteous indignation too? No thanks, too much of that already!

Stop expecting everybody to accept your particular interpretation and post the entire video to the internet; then each of us can judge whether we're personally offended by a mock baptism performed, recorded and posted to the internet by Utah football players.

Utah did have a one year anomaly. But in the nine straight years before that, Utah went 8-1 in their bowl games including a Fiesta Bowl Championship and a Sugar Bowl Championship against Alabama - just in case you were curious about that too. How did byU do during that period?

Nope. The government did not, he did it to himself. He had a criminal record and he broke the terms of his probation.

I honestly believe these two incidents highlights the difference between BYU and any other college. At BYU, the honor code is the honor code. If a BYU player was photographed in this manner, he would be at least suspended for a game. At Utah or most any other college really, the coach could care less and probably shared a laugh with the players.

I'm not blaming Whit, but he is part of the reason why anti-Mormon stuff is so acceptable. If this were remotely about Jewish rite, or a mocking of the Catholics, then the National media as well as the local guys, would be in a frenzie...but once again anti-Mormon postings are waved off as "boys being boys."

I wonder how President Monson feels about his alma mater now?

We all know what the non-LDS and mormon haters think, but for the LDS players it that play there is just dissapointing. It is too bad to see that the utes are going away from their roots and falling into the way of the world. Come on guys, where's the respect."

He was being baptized in the name of "LGI" or "Lets get it". It's a motto used heavily around the U football team. And this video was made right in the middle of fall camp. These kids were clearly just messing around in a cold tub and were excited to start playing for real. People who are offended by this are so, because they are trying to be offended. Complete non-story.

    Veritas,

Yes, I saw the video. I saw nothing offensive at all. I saw a player being lowered into what we are told by those who were there was ice cold water taking a dare to immerse himself in the water. Then the player's reactions to that. I saw no attempt to mock anything sacred or special. It certainly was a stupid stunt, given the affect ice cold water can have on the brain, but I saw nothing that indicated something disrespectful was intended towards BYU or any religion. The press and BYU fans haved revealed their thin skin by making up something to take offense at.

    Two For Flinching,

Really?! Tell me what in this video is offensive? The way Blechen is standing with his arms folded across his chest is the same way they have you stand in team building exercises as you fall backwards trusting the others in your group will catch you. So are those team building exercises simulating baptisms? Get over it BYU fans. You didn't really find anything and your continued attempts to make something out of nothing are only being believed and fueled by the press. The press love controversy and we are all feeding their hunger for it.

From a big time BYU fan for decades and a BYU alum I plead with everybody on this board to talk with a neighbor who is of the other team's fan based and do so with respect. Become friends, get over the rivalry. Look past it. It's a football game! We are all the same deep down. This isn't a way to live. Please. To borrow from MLK - I have a dream that someday a man will not be judged by the color of his team's mascot, but by his character. It is sad that a rivalry between Universities can cause such hurt, division, and anger between people that really should be good friends. I have many friends and family that are red. To all those fans that can't get past it on both sides I plead with you to stop the hatred.

There can be little doubt about what was intend. I am very disappointed in the coach's attitude and comments. Apparently his time in Utah has changed him quite bit. He did not apologize as he should have and he certainly should have taken some disciplinary action toward the players involved. He should have named all the players that participated. I found this shocking and totally uncalled for. I'm not surprised that the players would do something like this, after all they are enrolled at Utah, but things have slipped a lot in the administration of that university to allow this to pass without corrective action. We've lowered the standards once again.

I saw the youtube video. I don't see it as a big deal. People are all too often looking to get offended. As a Ute fan I think it's not funny but so what. If anything it hurts Utah having to be slightly distracted in preparation for the rivalry game. With the bye week, BYU has had more time to prepare and maybe this adds a little motivation on top of what is already there.

The Utah fan exposing Hadley was the far more low blow. There are always fans who do insane things. Will Hadley be missed? I guess we will see. The honor code is what it is and players/students at BYU sign on. Speculating on the booster part of the story is the bigger concern for BYU, just not in this game.
