    Good job Chris and Tom.

Despite the pretended disinterest from a few fans, this a series that vast majority of BYU and Utah fans want to see continued. It's literally the biggest game on the Utah sports calendar.

  • Chris B Salt Lake City, UT
    Sept. 16, 2013 2:33 p.m.

Why did we switch to Fresno?

Fresno is as good of a program as byu, will provide as much of a challenge, and is in a key recruiting area.

We already are winning the recruiting war in Utah(see HEAD TO HEAD) wins by Utah every year since our Pac 12 invitation.

So we're already getting the best local kids.

But local kids don't provide speed.

We need to go to Texas/California to get speed.

Great decision to get more exposure in California by playing one of the best non-power conference teams in the country.

  • Chris B Salt Lake City, UT
    Sept. 16, 2013 2:35 p.m.

byu should be grateful we're playing them.

They need Utah. Utah does not need them.

Utah has a great schedule by virtue of being worthy of a Pac 12 invitation.

Besides, byu is not a rival anymore.

No power conference teams consider non-power conference teams true rivals

Can anyone name a single great rivalry including 1 power conference team and 1 non-power conference team?

    Nope!

    San Diego considers USC/UCLA rivals.

    USC/UCLA don't consider San Diego a rival.

    This is similar to Utah/byu

We are above byu and the more we disassociate ourselves from WAC programs like byu/usu the better.

When this game is played in 2017 it will have been SIX years since byu beat Utah.

    SIX YEARS!

This is interesting news. Can you please produce the dates/times schedule thing for the 2025 contest so I can plan for Armageddon? You might need a crystal ball but drastic circumstances call for all measures taken for all of us in the red and blue holding our breath for the future and all the investment time can allow.

I for one wish it was over and we NEVER play each other again. Utah fans puffed attitude about being in a power conference is wearing thin.

Why did Utah switch to Fresno St.?

Because, as Dr. Hill himself said when he made the announcement in July 2012:

"What we have to do is make sure we don’t come close to overscheduling," he said.

In Hill’s mind, playing both Michigan and BYU in the same years would have put the Utes in that situation.

"I can’t expect us to play 11 really, really difficult games in a season," he said.

Spin it however helps U sleep at night chrissy, but the reality is Hill dropped BYU for Fresno St to give the Utes a better chance of being bowl eligible in 2014 and 2015.

  • Cool Cat Cosmo Payson, UT
    Sept. 16, 2013 2:59 p.m.

I guess that it is fitting that both schools announce the continuation of the rivalry just before the 2 year hiatus...

Most fans on both sides have argued that quitting the rivalry is silly; Dr. Hill realized his mistake, and this is a step in the right direction to righting that wrong. I also appreciate his earlier youtube video announcing his willingness to continue to play BYU.

Those fans who have lamented the demise of the rivalry, rejoice! And as for those who think the rivalry should die because it is too heated, here's at least one fan who believes the 2-year break will help temper those crazed fans and feelings a bit.

Glad to see the game return to Nov. some where down the road even if it isn't for awhile. Nice to see the PAC come around with several games against BYU in Nov. scheduled.

Looks like Utah just like the rest of the PAC 12 got its two for one with BYU. 2016 RES. 2017 LES. 2018 RES. LOL!

Is it lonely in your dark world Chrissy??

The BYU/Utah game will add class to both schedules. Anyone who believes otherwise is in a state of denial. Looking forward to Saturday. Go Cougars!!!

The way Utah played on Saturday night (the Defense was horrendous), they may want to schedule easier teams. After BYU beats them they will have a tough road ahead to become bowl eligible. Wow, three years in a row without making it to a bowl game is quite the accomplishment. Chris B and all the other "U" fans can keep their so called cherished PAC-12 membership. Every so-called power conference has a bottom-dweller team and Utah is quickly becoming like Duke, Kentucky, Iowa State, and Indiana.

Typical Utah math - what part of alternating home and away do you not understand?

It's easy to understand really. When you are in a power conference, those games are good enough for your SOS for rankings consideration. If you are in a mid-major, or Indy, then you have to schedule as many good teams as you can. Utah learned this the hard way in 04, 08 when because of the weaker MWC schedule, they were never voted high enough early to garner the BCS vote. I have no problem playing the Y and in fact think we should every year as the first game.

Some "fans" (aka chrissy-esque trolls) like to bash the opponent and pretend that somehow makes them better "fans."

Let me be perfectly clear: such "fans" are the minority in this state. I'm proud to say that my neighbors and I may cheer for the opposite team in the Holy War / rivalry, but every other waking moment of our lives we are there for each other. Examples:

I need to move a heavy object? He's the first one to offer to help.

I see his kid running down the road? I'm the first to run after, chat with him, and remind him why it isn't safe as we walk back to his mother.

My garage is left open? He'll kindly shut it and let me know about it...you get the idea.

I love this state, I love BYU and Utah football, and I hope everyone knows that almost ALL the fans I know are the same, cheering for each other the rest of the year, and exhibit true sportsmanship always. Trolls cheer when the other teams gets an injury, loses, etc. True fans know how to cheer for both teams, win or lose.

Utah's bowl game for 2013 is this week end. It must be really discouraging for them to realize that they will have to wait until 2017 for their next one.

Utah fans cluelessly making excuses for Dutchman's silly claim are hilarious.

27-0, 56-6, 56-28, 55-7, 70-31, 4th and 18, Beck to Harline ripping the heart out of Ute Nation!

    Go Cougars!

    phantom

    I can play that:

49-0, 45-13, 43-0 and 43-0 all part of a Utah streak of 18 Ws in a row over the cougs.

35-6, 30-0, 38-0, 41-9 and 41-6 all part of a Utah streak of 11 Ws in a row over the cougs.

52-21 and 54-10 are the most recent beat downs in the series and both left the cougs licking their wounds.

    Thank you, come again.

    utahcountyute

Unfortunately for U, your "streak" was absolutely meaningless on a national scale.

How many of those Utah teams were ranked, won a meaningful conference championship, or played in a bowl?

Utah has never had an 18-game winning streak versus BYU; as much as you would like to think so, a tie is as much a win for BYU as it is for Utah.

Utah's largest margin of victory, 49-0, came 30 years after Utah started playing football, against a brand new BYU team, comprised entirely of first year players, with a brand new coaching staff.

BYU's largest margin of victory, 56-6, (the largest margin in the history of the series), along with all of those other lopsided victories, came against a Utah team that had previously dominated BYU for the first 40 years of the series.

Every one of those BYU teams finished in the Top 25, won a conference championship, and played in a bowl.

Your johnny-come-lately program hasn't been good enough to string together more than two AP Top 25 finishes in a row, ever.

    Thanks for playing.

54-10 has to be one of the most embarrassing scores, ever, for Utah fans, considering:

    BYU(10-3) #25 Coaches, #26 AP, #34 Sagarin
Utah(8-5) no votes in either poll, #39 Sagarin

BYU had a one-game melt down.
Utah had a season-long melt down.

We need to go to Texas/California to get speed.

    ----

Are you talking about Utah or BYU, Chris B.? I just checked Rivals it seems BYU is looking good for 2014 in the speed department when it comes to Texas and California recruits...

Nothing wrong with playing Fresno St. though, I would actually hope BYU schedules such a series.

    -----------

The 2-year break will only lead to further vitriol as fans debate who is better in the off season's. Though, it seems most of these debates break out in the comments sections following articles about BYU. I wonder why that is?

    Ute any mous

Nice excuses but it's still history and in the books and the game is still byU's "super bowl" .

    Sporto

Nice spin, however i was quite embarrassed for the cougs that day as was every coug "fan" on earth.

I hope it's a game this time in Provo.

  • Steven S Jarvis Orem, UT
    Sept. 17, 2013 7:37 p.m.

As a BYU fan I was hopeful that the big game would end and be gone forever just like BYU has done away with the series with Wyoming.

It has nothing to do with the Utes. They are a great football program that has a tremendous upside with their step up in competition.
It has nothing to do with the competition. No rivalry has been so nail-biting exciting as the majority of BYU-Utah bouts have been over the last twenty years.

It has EVERYTHING to do with the fans.

These message boards are replete with examples of the ugliness of the rivalry. BOTH schools have people representing themselves as fans of either team that need to get professional counseling. What I have seen in person at the way Ute fans have treated BYU fans is often inexcusable. I have also seen BYU fans cross the line. Ugliness and Anger.

If the rivalry could be about football and sportsmanship, then I feel it is the best of rivalries. Until both fans of Utah and of BYU can learn to be mutually respectful of one another it would be far better to end the game.
