Hard fought game. You have to admire Travis Wilson. Gutty performance, but he needs to learn that it's better to take a sack than throw into coverage. Great game utes, it sucks that it wasn't enough. I have a feeling the defense is going to get some OT work this week. Defense has got to get better, but there's hope considering the great strides Utah has made offensively. Last year this game would have been over at 27-10. Utah's offense looking 10X better than last year.

I see improvement in the Utes as they almost kept up with a medium decent PAC12 team.

This is so frustrating. We were clearly the superior team with the better defense.

I planned on getting the other half of my "PAC-10 Annex" tattoo finished with this win. It will have to wait.

    We'll kill BYU next week!

u will not return to elite status

It will be years before u even sniff a South division title in the pac

u have become irrelevant, a doormat for all other teams in their conference

Teams fight and beg to play u in the pac opener

    Why?

Because Kyle Whittingham is 0-3 in pac openers

    LOL!

This was a tough loss for Utah. One observation is that Oregon State demonstrated very very poor tackling. The Utah secondary really struggled although that was the long ball. I will be curious to see if they are stronger against the 10 - 15 yard pass. The fact is that Utah is going to have to be far more concerned about BYU's rushing game, which will provide opportunities for those 10 - 15 yard passes. Only one week and we'll see how it all plays out.

  • Common Sense Czar Sandy, UT

Hindsight is always 20/20 but overtime probably wasn't the best time for Dennis Erickson to let Brian Johnson call the plays. I also wasn't crazy about choosing to play that first overtime on the old folks end of the stadium.

I'm a Ute...but Utah will lose at least one more game like tonight this season. To quote another Ute...mark it down!

I miss Mountain West Utah football, when we were considered the "underdogs" and played with a chip on our shoulder! Now that we're in the Pac 12, we think we're the elite now and lost that chip!

  • idaho cougar fan Twin Falls, ID

I was rooting for the U in this one, ultimately a more seasoned qb who made less mistakes carried his team to victory. Does not look good for the U. Losing to a team that lost to a FCS team in Eastern Washington. OSU might be the 2nd worst team in the Pac 12 besides Colorado (now Utah) WSU looks improved and does not look like a gimmie anymore either. I hope that Utah can beat those mid major Cougars next week, because looking at the rest of the schedule, I don't see many more wins after that. Another basement finish looms for the team on the hill. Get used to it!

  • 4BS St George, UT

I didn't expect OSU to have much of a defense, but I did expect Whittingham to have one. Not too impressive Kyle. I think your seat is getting hotter and hotter each week. Just wait until they play Oregon, should be comical.

  • gdog3finally West Jordan, Utah
    Sept. 15, 2013 1:11 a.m.

Utah actually has an offense this year. Now they have to up against a really tough defense in BYU. The Cougars have been awful offensively for two years and then last week against Texas put up insane numbers in a good way. Can they be effective next week? Utah's defense which has been their staple for years is now vulnerable (talented but young and inexperienced). So BYU's offense against Utah's defense is also hard to predict.

I think the big difference is Utah apparently has focused so much on revamping its offense that it forgot you actually have to defend as well. 51 points to Oregon State? At home? Embarrassing. Like I've said all along, gonna be a looooooooooong season for the Utes. 3-4 wins is all they'll get.

All I can say is...What a game. Can't wait till next week. Will the Cougar defense shut the Utes Down. I don't see the Utes scoring in the forties. If the Cougars can run like they did agaInst the Horns, it may be a long day for the Utes. If Taysom Hill can learn to set his feet and connect with his receivers and if those receivers can catch the ball I think that BYU will win. If the Utes defense can show up and their offense can keep clicking along then they will win. I say BYU wins 28-24. The Utes pass defense will come up way short again...At least I hope so!

  • Samurai Jake Salt Lake City, UT
    Sept. 15, 2013 1:16 a.m.

The OT loss stings. However, Travis Wilson atoned for his mistakes. Unfortunately the D let us down tonight. Particularly the last play. If it hits your hands (let alone goes right through them), then you should be able to catch the ball. Would-be game ending pick turns into a game ending touchdown, which had even the Oregon State QB laughing and feeling mighty lucky. Despite the loss, the way Wilson got them back in the game was pretty freaking awesome. Now the trick is matching the offensive output, with a better defensive effort. DBs need to swivel their heads. Hopefully the D can minimize the mistakes that allowed OSU to sustain drives which ultimately resulted in touchdowns. Credit Coach Riley for dialing up the trick play on 4th and inches!

Shake off the tough loss, and the Utes should be just fine heading into Rivalry Week.

    Go Utes!

The Utes just lost AT HOME to a team that lost AT HOME to a Big Sky team that lost to Toledo.

In essence, the Utes are 1-1 in the Big Sky, and, as usual, winless versus PAC teams with winning records.

First PAC 12 game and already eliminated from Rose Bowl contention.

College football should get rid of the 'overtime' period....
    Ties in football are fine.
The only exception should be for a playoff game, and then they should play an extra quarter.
If that doesn't do it, then go to the quirky overtime rules they play by today.

To me, an overtime win is simply a tie with an asterisk.
Look back the last few years.... National Champion teams wouldn't be national Champions if they had to live by the score at the end of regulation.

  • gdog3finally West Jordan, Utah
    Sept. 15, 2013 1:53 a.m.

Yes this game hurts. You don't want to concede the conference after one game but Oregon State at home is a game you have to have. That said, beating BYU would make this loss bearable. Utah has to bounce back next week and then figure out their defensive weaknesses with the bye week that follows. UCLA and Stanford are huge challenges but you have them at home after the bye.

If Utah can go 2-1 in the next two games, then this game will be in the rear view for good.

I believe in Utah. This game tonight was a loss and a defensive nightmare. Still Utah has some offensive promise now and the defense can grow. The talent is not absent but the inexperience this year is everywhere.

The thing is though, many of the big plays made by Mannion and his receivers were just too good. Utah was actually in position but the throw and catch were just to precise. Taysom Hill won't be that accurate to beat Utah's secondary if they are in position but Utah has to stop Taysom Hill and Jamaal Williams on the ground.

  • 79Ute Orange County, CA
    Sept. 15, 2013 1:53 a.m.

Dang - I had marked it down as a win based on Chris B's prediction. Mannion looked great against our secondary. Was it Mannion or our secondary?

Wilson has promise, but the turnovers killed us.

If we're not better on defense and more careful with the ball we could lose the next seven-nine games. No more gimme's, not even WSU in Pullman or CU at home.

We really need the BYU win for some momentum for UCLA. If we lose to BYU it will be a nightmare of a season.

I will preface this by saying I cheer for all Utah teams in this particular order: BYU, USU and Utah. I like them all pretty equally but give preference to BYU.

Utah fans keep talking about "we are in the PAC 12." They get all high and mighty about it. Well, when you keep losing games like this (Colorado at home anyone?) then just take a step back. Talk when you are no longer a doormat in the conference. BYU fans pull it too, they will win a game and then talk like they will win the national championship.

I think I speak for most when I say I am really disappointed in this loss and Utah should have won this game, especially at home.Even one of Oregon State's media guys came on ESPN 700 last week and predicted Utah winning by 2 touchdowns. Not to say Oregon State is chop liver, but this is a tough loss because it is a blown opportunity.

Let's just hope the BYU/Utah game gives us a good show and I hope all Utah teams can go on a nice run the rest of the year.

  • gdog3finally West Jordan, Utah
    Sept. 15, 2013 2:41 a.m.

Utah and BYU will be intense next week.

Each week we have seen 'as the world turns' soap opera on the field. It's gloomy at Virginia, then blissful against Texas. Both games had two hour weather delays and an awful offense one week only to be followed by the offensive onslaught against Texas.

Utah has put up crazy good offensive numbers but the defense is a major work in progress. The DBs will be fine if they are in position next week I think though. Mannion was dropping dimes where Hill won't. The game plan will have to be different though for Utah. BYU is going to try and run the ball. That is Utah's strength. But their lack of a pass rush has to be tempting for Anae to try and expose the secondaries inexperience in my mind nonetheless.

A). Travis Wilson could be very, very good!
B). All of the worrying about preparing the offense, must have left no time to prepare the defense:

    1. No rush from the DLine.
    2. No corners...NONE...
    3. Safeties are...well, unsafe.

The only good thing in that defense is easier to fix than the O!

i do think Mannion is very good! Question is HOW GOOD? I feel we added to his greatness yesterday by starting the women's diving team on the "D" Line...

All joking aside I'm worried about next week as a cougar fan. After a tough loss byu dismantled an overconfident Texas team. Utah will be pumped. It will be a great game. I think BYU's D will give them a slight edge. In this rivalry game anything can happen.

It would appear that beating up on a terrible 1AA team like weber state gave utah "fans", and the local media pundits, a false idea of what utah really is. While this game was hugely entertaining it was also a game between to bottom level pac12 teams. Let's not forget osu lost to 1AA ewu at home. The irrational exuberance displayed this last week leading up to this game is especially amusing and the absence of christina, naval, gored, and other such utah "fans" is an hilarious bonus.

Should be a great game next week. It can't come fast enough. I think both teams will fair well if they dont throw a pass. Taysom cant throw it anywhere near his receivers and Wilson just throws it to the other team. both are incredible scramblers though. • Duckhunter Highland, UT
    Sept. 15, 2013 10:25 a.m.

    @2fer

"I disagree. Utah showed a lot of promise last night, especially on O. The Utes will be okay"

As utah "fans" so often like to point out to BYU fans, consider the opponent. utah just lost, at home, to osu, a team that just lost, at home, to a 1AA team. Doing great things on offense against teams like weber and osu is no indicator of "promise".

Equally troubling should be the fact that the supposedly all world best in the pac12 defensive line was completely incapable of putting any pressure at all on Mannion, a statue of a qb if there ever was one, and this despite the fact osu was playing with 3rd and 4th string offensive linemen. Wasn't that what utah "fans" and media types were telling us this entire last week?

Add in the fact utah's oline was less than stellar, and I am being really kind in that description, and I'm just not seeing where the "promise" comes from?

Remember utah is playing BYU this week, and BYU is unquestionably one of the best defenses in the country. BYU pressures qb's and they stuff running plays.

Wow! What a great game. Utah obviously needs to make a ton of improvements on defense. But I thought our offense looked really good, besides the three pics. Last year, we would have been done at 27-10. Can't wait for the BYU game! If we can somehow limit Taysom Hill to 100 rushing yards I think we have a good chance at winning. If Utah doesn't improve on defense, BYU will kill us. I have to give credit to Oregon State coach for that called on Fourth Down and Inches. When he pitched the ball, I thought we had the stop but again at the end of the play our defenders got beat down the field for a big play. My goal for Utah this year is 6 wins, which is looking kinda iffy with the schedule we have coming up. We have to beat BYU if we want to have a chance to go to a bowl game.

I was impressed with the Utes. Amazing mental toughness to keep coming back. Anderson and Poole have scary speed. Wilson looks a lot like a young Colin Kapernick. Credit OSU. Mannion is a stud and threw some incredibly clutch balls on 3rd and 4th down and in overtime. As for next week I see a tough game at LES with an extremely motivated BYU team coming out on top. I think the Utes are in for a long year.

Seriously, both offenses looked good. Both defenses looked bad. Hoping U don't make many changes in the D for next week. Williams, Hill and Hoffman will have a hay day.

Something tells me that Travis won't be running to the edges against KVN and Fua like he did against the Beavs. And Eathyn and Kaufusi will not let him up the middle.

Should be a good game. I can't wait for Saturday.

Tough one to lose. However, you can't give away the first quarter and play non-existent pass defense for four. As mentioned by others, I think Wilson atoned for his picks . He's still learning but at least he shows that he can consistently complete a pass over five yards.

Now that we have an offense our defense has disappeared. The two up the middle calls in OT were tough to watch. One more non-conference game and then back to the ones that count. Hope they can get that pass defense thing fixed.

No excuses - the Utes lost and to a respectful ORSt team who passing game is potent and was against a young db group. Also, our D-line sacked Mannion once??? Got to have more than that against a top QB. Fortunately, their run D rocked, so going into LES with that stat is a good thing. I'm happy with the offense production and especially Wilson after throwing Int's he bounced back strong each time. Don't be fooled, the Ute's are getting stronger! As young as we are, these games bring quick learning to a talented team. Go Utes!

I'm a diehard BYU fan but last night's Utah game against OSU was just as frustrating as was the Cougars against Virginia. I rooted so hard for the Utes to pull it out because I wanted them to come undefeated to the showdown at Provo. I wanted them to come a bit overconfident but now I'm afraid they're mad as heck and will come looking to take it out on the cougars like they did the last 3 years. I watched the game and truth be told, if the Utes had played 4 whole quarters instead of 3 and 1/2, they'd won hands down. It was almost into the middle of the 2nd quarter and they only had 3 rushing yards and 9 passing with no first down. It was pathetic! Luckily they finally woke up and it was amazing, even with all the mistakes they made which actually cost them the game. I hope BYU will not take them lightly. The Utes are good and will get better. I do hope the BYU game will be their last loss of the season.

Go Cougars! And after the rivalry game, go Utes...all the way!

    Koloss,
Yeah it would have been better if Texas had won, but at least they lost to an undefeated ranked team. In my opinion it makes BYU look better that they beat Texas by a similar score that Ole Miss beat them, racked up 250 more yards on them, and Texas had their best quarterback against BYU.

But anyway, I wish the Utes had won, but it sure was an entertaining game!

Oregon State vs Utah was by far the best college game this year. It had so many twists and turns and great risk taking. I thought going for it on 4th down by Oregon State and making it took guts. The touchdown and going for the two point conversion almost guaranteed OT because Travis Wilson was unstoppable. Utah has a good team with quickness. BYU and Utah are both far better teams than last year. BYU simply has the better defense this year but the Holy War is a toss up in my books.

Ute fans don't need excuses--if we wanted to kid ourselves we could simply rely on the y "fan" playbook to feel better:

"The Beavers didn't beat the Utes, they beat themselves"

something tells me that Hill will not get anywhere close to over 250 yards running against the Utes. I really don't mind the Utes. In fact I usually cheer for them except when they play the Cougars. I know Chris is just trolling everyone here on the Dnews comments sections writing things like "prestigious Pac 12 membership" and such. But there is some kind of satisfaction people get when a loud mouth gets put in his place. The sad part is that is everything that is wrong with the rivalry. I'm old enough to remember when it was a rivalry and not hatred. When McBride and Edwards were coaches on friendly terms. Those were the good old days and that is how it should be. Unfortunately coach Meyer's tenure changed that and now Whittingham and Bronco have failed to bring it back to where it should be. I'm glad the game is going to take a break. Maybe some of the old timers can let the youngsters know what is used to be like, what it should be like. A good rivalry where friends can watch a game together and cheer for their team.

Nice game Utah. You are looking better this year. You have finally found a quarter back who is going to get better. Tough loss, but you played it down to the wire. BYU fans why are you still so bitter? Utah was invited to play in the PAC 12 for a reason. Get over yourselves already. Utah is going to continue to get better in the PAC 12. And they will continue to out recruit BYU as long as you are not playing in a conference. Don't be surprised in the near future when BYU does away with football and puts the members money back where it belongs, building the Kingdom of God on the Earth not on new football uniforms. Have you ever really stopped to think the real reason they are not in a conference. It will be easier to just stop the program. Look what happened at BYU Idaho. I didn't get to see the entire game but what I did see makes me wonder why so many are down on the ute secondary. Their problem was that the OSU QB was so incredibly accurate that the ball went in the one place where the defender couldn't get to it.

I'm hoping T. Hill can learn that by next Saturday. But I think it is realistic that BYU will stick with forcing utah to stop the run and then slip in some 15-20 yard pass plays.

I'm hoping BYU will lay the wood to utah heavy and hard. But recent years have taught me that we should never underestimate the utes. No matter how bad they are in any given season they do tend to get themselves ready for the rivalry game.

  • poyman Lincoln City, OR
    Sept. 15, 2013 3:42 p.m.

The utes were beyond fortunate to even have made it close... But they did, and like a cheap lawn chair they folded...

But let's give the Beavers some credit... They have only lost one game (but then that game was to Eastern Washington an FCS school and they lost it on their home field). They did however beat Hawaii convincingly...

Objectively speaking, it was a real defensive battle between two exceptionally weak defenses... I could tell, atthe beinning of the second half that whoever made it to 50 first was going to win and sure enough those big bad beavers got there first.

Now I think that the ute's blogging and football expert predicted a 20 point win for the school from slc... He also predicted that the utes would have an 8-4 or 9-3 year... He also predicted that whoever won the game between utah and UCLA would win the PAC12 South...

Now I agree with his numbers but I believe he has them backwards... I predict a 4-8 or 3-9 year, and I project that the loser of the utah Colorado game will once again finish last in the South Division of the PAC12.

Very exciting game. A 2:00 am finish on the East coast makes for a short night. I thought the U had it. Looking forward to next week. I think the game will be close and low scoring. It will be interesting to see how the Y's 3-4 handles the Utah running game and can they pressure Wilson enough so he can't complete as many passes. OSU usually only had 4 DLs and when they took the inside lane Wilson got outside and big yardage. The X factor is, what is the U's mental state after such a hard loss. Many posts here talk about focusing on UCLA, that could be a big mistake.

As for "some" of these Utah fans, I hate to say I told you so. Many were looking past OSU because they lost to EWashington, and EW will most likely be playing for the National Title in their respective division, like they have a few times.

CougarSD, what a game in Lincoln. I was very happy with my Bruin win. I was worried with their performance in the 1st qtr. And, that game at Sun Devil Stadium was a battle. I am convinced I think that UCLA and ASU are for real, but again it is still early so I would love to see improvement for both still with a few more wins. The one I am unsure of is Stanford, I know they won, I didn't see their game. But to struggle a bit with Army early surprised me. Right now, ranking the P12 is and using respective division for consideration also 1) Oregon, 2) UCLA *I'm biased, 3) ASU, 4) Washington, 5) Stanford 6) Arizona*Still some to prove 7)California 8) Oregon St 9)Wash St. 10) USC 11) Utah 12) Colorado

My thoughts on last nights game. Wilson surprised me, I honestly didn't think he was that good. If he continues like that, many teams are going to struggle with the Utes this year. I actually liked Utahs Run-D last night but not so sure it was tested as running is not OSU's M.O. However, I thought Utahs secondary got picked apart by what I would call an average to above average OSU QB. I am not saying he was bad, but their are better P12 QB's than him and Utah will need to improve that. I thought Utah played tough and I think they will be in every game this they play this year. Right now I just don't see them beating UCLA, Arizona State, but I also think right now, those games will still be close. I can see Utah right now beating Colorado for sure and very close games but very good potential wins against USC and Arizona. AZ has not been tested yet this season so I am a little leary about their 3-0 start. Good luck Utes, tough loss last night, but I knew OSU would not be a cake walk.

I wish I was able to watch the game in Lincoln. That was a great game. I thought UCLA was going to lose, but what a third quarter! I agree with your rankings too. Stanford looks vulnerable. I'm worried about the UCLA game now. I think ASU will drop their game there, all things held constant. I think ASU could pull off a win against Stanford, but their home field could prove too much. It will be ASU's first road game.

Either way I think the PAC 12 south is well represented with teams not called Utah. I do think OSU was better than their loss to EWU, but OSU clearly has defensive issues...as does the Utes. Oregon still looks like the flag bearer. We'll see if UCLA or ASU can dethrone them this year.

I doubt that anyone who knows anything about college football would agree with the assertion that the Running Redskins are elite in any major sport. Just joining the PAC doesn't make anyone elite even Colorado with a better football/basketball record vs Utah can never be called elite, nor Washington State. Stanford is elite, UCLA is now playing at an elite level, USC is not-. ASU is coming on to elite status with a win over Wisconsin, but they have been in the PAC for 30+ years with lots of ups and downs, Utah has been around for 2 years doing nothing but embarrassing itself in conference play. You have to beat elite teams to be elite.

  • DraperUteFan Draper, UT

Lightening Lad, do us all a favor and leave the analysis to people wearing big boy pants laddie. EWU did not trounce OSU, so get your facts straight. Did you bother to watch that game? If so, you would have seen a QB at EWU who was very much like Chuckie Keeton (dangerous with his running and passing skills).

Most Ute fans don't think of Utah as an elite program, so when you state "you have to beat elite to be elite" Captain Obvious, which elite program has BYU beaten in the last 10 years when that team was truly elite at the time?

The very few "elite" programs BYU has played in the last dozen years or so have typically beaten BYU, often soundly. BYU consistently loses to the upper echelons of the Pac 12, including USC, UCLA, Washington.

Last I checked, Utah beat an elite program named Alabama who has gone on to win national championships (note the plural), since then. Can BYU claim the same?

I think your logic is impaired. Ole Miss is a ranked, undefeated, SEC team who beat Texas by almost the same margin BYU did.

Utah lost to a team who couldn't stop an FCS team. Judging by the scores alone, one can conclude that either Utah, Oregon State, and Eastern Washington have good offences, or VERY bad defenses. Considering that Eastern Washington just lost to Toledo 33-21, I'm guessing it's more a case of VERY bad defenses.

Toledo over the years has given Michigan and Ohio State more than they would like to deal with.

As for skewed logic, check your own. The bottom line is Texas is not very good. A week after the loss to BYU, you would think Texas would have cleaned up some things. They lost at home by an equally lopsided score. Ole Miss hasn't really beaten anyone yet to earn their ranking and they play Alabama next. They'll be out of the top 25 as quickly as they cracked it.

Utah's defense is bad right now. BYU's offense in week one was terrible. Recent history shows the Utah-BYU game will be close. Utah and BYU are both average at best right now. By year's end, both teams could have 5 or more losses.

Some of the chest pounding Cougs on this board have a very short memory. 2012...BYU vs OSU...42-24 Beavers with backup QB Cody Vaz.

OSU had more returning starters than just about any team in the Pac 12. If you think they are that bad, why did BYU lose to them convincingly at their blackout game last year?

This is the strongest PAC 12 since Utah joined the conference. The Utes will get better and make improvements and they have a very young team at skill positions. I'm not worried that they lost a close game to a very good OSU team. BTW, Mannion is the real deal and if you don't think so, you didn't watch the game. The guy made passes down the sideline that few QBs could make once in a game and he made them 5-6 times right on the money.

    Devil:

You guys crowed so much about beating Ole Miss with Jake Hypes at the wheel, I just thought you ought to count your blessings this year.

As far as Ole Miss' ranking, that's pure SEC bias. They edged Vandy and then beat that 1AA powerhouse Southeast Missouri State (3-9 last year) by 18 at home.

The fact that Ole Miss then cut up Texas in Austin by 21 points greatly tarnishes the glory you y "fans" have been heaping upon your team since the 7th. The 180 degree fan chatter has been laughable, particularly after such a horrible loss to UVa.

    __________

How are things in Austin? Anything is better than talking about the crummy Longhorns. Hey! you were beat by BYU, a team masquerading as elite.

By our same logic, so would the Virginia game be in the distant past too. But read my posts. They say that osu and ewu were good teams with bad defenses. However, Osu and Utah will likely not be doing well come bowl season. Osu has rebounded with two wins against quality opponents in Hawaii and Utah. Yeah, not impressed. Utah fans are beating their chests just as hard about their quality opponents too. Utah state (which Chris b calls a WAC team) and fcs weber st. So quit your pounding if your chest until you play a quality team too (and win).

John, ole miss was two years ago. Live in the now. The now is Utah vs BYU. This week throw out all the who played who and enjoy the game. Then, win or lose, go on to lose to my sun devils like you always do, and everyone else with a winning record in the PAC 12, and some with losing records. That, John is "laughable" (dumb word too)

I take it you suffered traumatic memory loss in 2011.

For those that did not watch the game, let me sum up: it was a dismal performance by the Utes and WSU could have beaten the mighty USC Trojans. What? They already did? Well, there you have it.
