Auto-Pedestrian accidents can only happen when a pedestrian and an auto try to occupy the same space at the same time. That's why we have designated areas for pedestrians (sidewalks)... and designated areas for autos (the streets).

When a pedestrian decides to enter the streets... there's a good chance there's going to be a problem. When an auto enters the sidewalks... there's good chance there's going to be a problem.

We need to teach everybody that it makes as much sense for a pedestrian to run into the street without checking, as it makes sense for a driver to drive on the sidewalks without checking. Sometimes it makes sense to do both, ie when a pedestrian is crossing the street, or when a car is entering a driveway, etc... But when these situations come up... it's imperative to check that it's safe to proceed.

Drivers need to watch for pedestrians. And pedestrians need to watch for drivers. And do everything they can to avoid occupying the same space at the same time.
