for all the talk about how good Taysom Hill played, I would say that Travis Wilson played far better. According to the espn pac12 blog, the last person to post a better QB rating than Travis Wilson was Andrew luck in 2010 (I think). I think Travis played a better game without a doubt... Albeit against inferior competition. I look at it like this, if Travis was BYU's quarterback would BYU have won the game? Yes... and probably by a larger margin too.

Utah WILL go 8-4 or 9-3 and has as good of a chance at winning Pac 12 title as anyone. USC is already down a game, having lost to Washington State.

I think its either Utah or UCLA for south title.

Crazy! It will take another couple of weeks for the picture to clear a little, IMO.

Oregon State - preseason top 25 losing to Eastern Washington, Big Sky member
USC (preseason top 25) - losing to Washington State; or from another perspective Washington State beating USC.
    Washington drilling Boise State.

Then again there is Oregon 60 point winners over Virginia. USU handily defeating Air Force at Air Force (don't know when the Utes ever did that as impressively). BYU after losing to Virginia coming back with a revamped offensive line and defeating handily a previously ranked Texas.

Strange year already; however, when it settles out I hope Utah climbs the bowl ranking (it looks like the PAC-12 could have up to 9 teams in bowls. That's with Oregon or Stanford in the BCS championship. Oh by the way did you see Stanford, UCLA, and Arizona State(all ranked in the top 25 and as high as in the top 5) will be in SLC playing conference games in the month of October. The Stage is set - now Utah shine!

    @reasonableute

I would agree that Wilson has shown more in his games than hill has, however, I don't think he would have played better than hill against Texas. It's just my opinion, but, I think that the reason that BYU was able to handle Texas was because Texas was expecting pass heavy play. Wilson is good, but he is not nearly as good a runner as Hill.

I like our chances this week against Oregon State. On Saturday our offense was flawless---70 points, and our defense looked good. Contrary to the critics, our DB's have looked good thus far. This will be a good test against either of the Beavers' two good quarterbacks.

Meanwhile, BYU will be frantically preparing for 1/2 month in their attempt to defeat Utah, something they haven't done in quite a while. That game will be a challenge, since it is essentially BYU's bowl game for the year.

    Go Utes!!

Biggest game of the year Saturday. Travis has been amazing so far with his acurracy, when given time. He should be able to put up some big numbers against OSU. OSU throws for 440 yards per game,Secondary needs to play well.

Utah fans. All of the chest beating for romping on Weber State is dangerous. You are hanging way too many hopes on your two wins, one against one early poor team and a decent team that you just barely won, at home. If that is your standard you have no prayer of even coming close to beating decent competition. Calm down. You are in for a huge let down as the season goes on. The PAC 11+u is no patsie this year. The game with Washington St. is guaranteed as you thought it may have been. And your nemesis, Colorado might surprise you. I still see this being a 4-8 season.

  • But seriously folks! Salt Lake City, UT
    Sept. 9, 2013 9:37 a.m.

Really ute fans?. You are celebrating a win over Weber State? You may get your 4 wins this year but one of them will not be against BYU.

BYU's defense will take you apart and Wilson will leave the same after the forth sack by Van Noy and Fua. BYU is not the same team you faced last three seasons.
The loses start this week against OSU and will continue the following week. By week 6 Utah will be 2-4. CB can mark that down.

Who is beating on their chest about Weber St.? Utah did what they were supposed to do; nothing more, nothing less.

    Nice try.

What in the world does "mark it down" supposed to mean? Like someone's actually going to write down, or give a second thought, to some extremely biased and ridiculous prediction from someone named But Seriously Folks, Down Under? The same person who talks junk before the game, yet when the prediction is way off they run and hide? Yeah, right.

reasonableute - how can you compare QB performances, when one QB played against Texas (Top 25 at the time) and the other QB played against Weber St.

Like so many other years - PAC is not living up to pre-season hype. Utah's strength of schedule is plummetting as Oregon State and USC prove they are not Top 25, and are probably not Top 50 teams. Utah should go bowling with the much easier schedule.

For all the Utes who claim that BYU is the pre-season Nat'l Champ every year, there is a lot of chest thumping going on here after U beat a D2 team, and stole a win from USU, even though they clearly outplayed U. They just got out coached.

Can't wait for BYU's re-match with Utah. The winner gets to be the champ for three years!

It seems that Spokane does not read the local papers and was not at the game. You need to get out more. The campus is all in frenzy about their win over a div. 2 school, at home. Reality will set in next week against real competition. I wonder when the utes will have the courage to play on the road?

"because Texas was expecting pass heavy play."

Nobody will ever expect "pass heavy" play with Hill at QB. He is an outstanding runner but can't throw accurately over five yards. With one knee surgery already, he keeps running like that and unfortunately he won't last long. He's a one trick pony and it's a dangerous trick.

It seems like Down Under is up to his usual M.O. When he can't come up with any proof, he has to make up material. As far as reality goes, BYU has already got a cold slap in the face by losing to the worst team in the ACC. How embarassing.

It was a good win for BYU. I'm not going to take anything away from that. But to say that Utah's SOS is plummeting because of teams like OSU and USC losing and where ranked in the top 25. I'm sorry but the same goes for Texas being in the top 25. I think Football does an injustice by ranking teams this early in the year. There is no way to say that Texas was a top 15 team. I'm sorry. Again, great win and I would love it if our Aggies could do it. But it usually takes 4 to 5 weeks or more to truly start seeing where teams are nationally. And even with that much time it's hard to say.

What I learned about the QB's in Utah:
Utah QB looks to be very good!
    USU QB IS very good!
BYU QB is a great running back ;-) Nothing more as of right now.

    @ GoRed:

I guarantee you BYU is not "frantically" preparing for their game with Utah... especially after how they played against Texas.

And yes, the Utah game is a big one for BYU, just as it also is for Utah. I also guarantee you it is NOT their bowl game of the year. They've already been invited to one in post-season play. And considering that Utah didn't even qualify for a bowl game last year, the BYU game is much more likely to be Utah's bowl game this year... again.

Remember how Utah fans stormed the field 3 different times before the actual end of the game with BYU last year and also wanted to take down the goal posts. That made it totally obvious that game was Utah's biggest of the year. It could easily be that way again this year... except for the outcome will be different due to the game being played in Provo.

And yes, I do remember Utah bucking the odds and beating BYU badly in Provo not so long ago. But that was truly an anomaly. BYU is much better at home and literally win 90% of their games there.

Oregon State is a BIG game! Consider this: By the time we play UCLA at home on Oct. 3rd there will have been 9 conference games played. That will give a much clearer picture on strengths/weaknesses of the teams. And if we can defeat Oregon State that means other teams in the conference will have lost 9 conference games. With one exception, we play conference foes for the remaining regular season schedule this year. This is what we have prepared for. This is what we look forward to. This is our opportunity - together we can!

    Down under:

"All of the chest beating for romping on Weber State is dangerous."

You don't need to worry about us, we are not byU. We are not the ones who proclaimed to be in the NC race after one win over an over rated Oklahoma. Look at how the byU "fans" are beating their chests about a win over an extremely over-rated Texas team, while forgetting that their QB can't pass to save his life, and that they lost the week before to a VERY poor Virginia team. Meanwhile, the best player on your team is proclaiming the Utah game your "Superbowl"! No pressure!! And to top that all off - you still don't have any corners!!

In addition, you are underestimating how good USU is. Chucky can run like Hill, maybe better - but be doesn't HAVE to. He is a very accurate passer and will turn your secondary into swiss cheese. He is the best QB we will face all year, IMO. You will find out, and you will pay the price. Then you can go back to calling for Bronco to be fired again!

    @Ute buster:

Which one of these is your definition of "power school":

    MTSU
    Virginia
    Idaho St
    Houston
    Giorgia Tech
    Nevada
    UConn
    USU
    UCF
    So Miss
    UNLV??

That just covered 66.67 per cent of byU's 2013 and 2014 schedules.

Must be a Utah County thing.

"I guarantee you BYU is not "frantically" preparing for their game with Utah." "I also guarantee you it is NOT their bowl"

KVN - this is our Superbowl

"They've already been invited to one in post-season play"

They've negotiated one, and that is their only hope - IF they qualify.

"And yes, I do remember Utah bucking the odds and beating BYU badly in Provo not so long ago. But that was truly an anomaly. BYU is much better at home and literally win 90% of their games there."

In the last 20 years, the game has been played in Provo 10 times, with Utah holding a winning record of 7-3. So, a Utah win is not an "anomaly". A win by Utah is not "bucking the odds". byU does not "literally" beat Utah 90% of the time in Provo.

"the outcome will be different due to the game being played in Provo."

That's what they say EVERY two years. In order for your words to be credible, they have to be backed by facts, which they currently aren't.

I think that Chucky is the best QB in that state, by FAR! May be the best player in the state. He is fun to watch, except when Utah is playing against him. I'm glad we don't have to face him again. byU is in for a long day when they meet Checky and Co in Logan. How is that an "anomaly"? Not only did Utah beat BYU at LES in 2011 54-10 but also whupped BYU in 2008 (48-24), and 2004 (52-24). The last time BYU beat Utah by more than a TD was in 1996 (37-17). Seems to me that Utah destroys BYU, but the other games are close, and don't go back to the '80s, that would be truly pathetic. Do some research, I'm trying to help you (Tators) think reasonably.
