I can admit when I am wrong, and wrong I was! I did not think BYU even had a chance in this game, and I certainly didnt think Texas would "submit to (BYU's) will"

Texas clearly did not know how to defend the Read Option, and BYU executed it to perfection, over and over again. I dont know what to expect from BYU in their next game, but Utah's D knows how to defend the Read Option.

Good win, but I wouldn't expect Sitake to crash three players on the runningback on every option play. Hill will have to throw the ball effectively to win, so I expect Hoffman's play to be the X factor against the Utes' defense.

Having extra time against Virginia sure went well for byU.

Did you see what athletes that go fast and hard did against Virginia?

    Oregon 59
    Virginia 10

I guess its one thing to say you are a go fast go hard offense.

    Another thing to BE it.

After Utah beats byu, it will be a SWEEP for the 2013 seniors.

In fact, SECOND sweep of the last 15 years for Utah over byu.

Do you know how far back you have to go to get the last 2 byu 4-0 sweeps over Utah?

    Far.

    Very far.

    Very very far.

@STgSLC, here is where you have heard something similar. In whether Ute fans would rather beat BYU or go bowling "The blog Ute Football Central posed that question to Twitter followers earlier this month. According to the blog post, 64 percent of Utah fans would rather beat BYU than go to a bowl game, according the poll." Yes, the Des News wrote about it, but it was a Ute fan site poll.

Can someone please explain the following to me (from this article)...

"Williams suffered an unspecified back injury against the Longhorns, but both Williams and Mendenhall said Saturday night that Williams is “fine.” The sophomore running back sent a message on Twitter Sunday that read, “I will be ready for the Utah game.”

So I saw the end of the game where it looked like Williams was being bent (backwards) in half by the Texas pile... but I have only heard from the media that Williams "says he is fine"... until now. Does the DNews actually have a verifiable source that says he has "an unspecified back injury" or was that just squeezed in there to get people excited?

    "KVN/Hoff want 0-4 against UTAH"

Not sure what this means? Does it mean Kyle Van Noy and Cody Hoffman want to be 0 and 4 against Utah? Was it a typo and should be "went"? No, that doesn't make sense, but what does it mean?

While I'm not a big fan of some of the meanness from some fans on both sides, the BYU/Utah game is often fun to watch as it is difficult to predict because of the emotional content.

Unfortunately I think some BYU fans think BYU has to win to validate their LDS faith (how many LDS go/went to Utah? I'm one) and some LDS haters become Utah fans to validate their hatred of LDS. I think this is a mistake on both sides, it would be nice to just have it be a nice in-state rivalry football game without any other underlying meaning. How wonderful it would be to be able to graciously welcome Utah fans to the BYU tailgating area and just enjoy each others company on game day! Most of the people that go to Utah and BYU are great people.

Here is Missouri, I haven't seen any mention at all of Utah beating up on Weber state... but I have seen plenty of national coverage of BYU beating up on Texas. In fact, I see that ESPNU is replaying the BYU game right now.

Texas looked like they were unprepared to play BYU. I am sure Utah will be prepared to play in 2 weeks. Should be a great game.

Biggest question I have right now is... Would I rather have Utah beat USC and stick it to kiffen or see Utah be one of the few teams that USC is able to beat this year.... tough choice...

And now begins BYU's two week preparation for their desperate attempt to defeat the Utes. Utah doesn't have the luxury of scheduling a bye before the rivalry game, but then, it shows that the Utes have moved on to bigger and better things.

For BYU, this is their bowl game for the year. For Utah, it is just another game as they prepare for the challenging PAC 12 schedule which includes playing two teams ranked in the top five.

    @ 2013 Ute Seniors SWEEP byU 4-0,

Don't know what the score of the Oregon - Virginia game has to do with the article. In case you missed it, BYU played a nationally ranked Texas team (projected by many to be the top team in their conference) full of 5 star recruits, and gave them one of their worst beat downs in school history.

Of course many will argue that it was an overrated Texas team, just like they did with another nationally ranked team that BYU beat a few years back. It is also possible that the teams were actually good teams that lost their will (and offensive weapons) due to beatings that they were given by BYU. It has happened before (even to BYU), where a team suffers a particularly devastating loss early in the season, and then underperforms for the remainder of the season, feeling that the season is lost. Either way, it would make sense to keep comments on subject related to the article. The world is a beautiful and sensible place without crimson colored glasses. Things suddenly start to make a lot more sense.

BYU had its A game against a quality 15th ranked Texas. It was fun to watch, perhaps one of the best games in BYU history. BYU has the potential to destroy Utah on Sep 21st. The cream puff opponent Weber State victory does nothing for Utah. The very lucky onside kick against Utah State is the only reason the U is 2 and O. Utah will play twice as hard against BYU than any other opponent to make the game interesting for the first half but then BYU's defense and offense will kick in for a blowout. The three year U win streak will end on Sep 21st.

Based on the fans comments, the Utes are already looking towards BYU and forgetting about next Saturdays game. Does that mean they are anticipating a big loss? and hoping for a bright spot again BYU?

It appears the fans know they will lose on Saturday. I think it would be more beneficial if they actually supported their team rather than just opposed everything BYU.

Keeton is threat through the air, in addition to being a great runner. As of right now, the same cannot be said about Hill. I'm sure Utah will be more than ready for BYU's run game which means Hill will have to win it with his arm. (22-66, 304 yards, 33.3%, 304 yards, 4.6 ave., 1 TD, 2 INTs) I like Utah's chances.

"After big win over Texas, Cougars have an extra week to prepare for Utes"

BYU is going to need that extra week to prepare for big brother. Meanwhile Utah has a conference game this week to tune up their offense and defense in a live game situation. Travis Wilson looks like a darn good QB so far. In fact he's one of the best QB's in the nation right now.

I believe Utah will once again beat BYU. The main reason is, BYU's offense is very one dimensional. The Cougs have a solid run game and a running back as their quarterback. Taysom Hill is a horrible passing quarterback. For Utah to win, all they need to do is contain Taysom Hill and shut down the run game. Like they've done in years past. Taysom Hill can't hit a broad side of a barn when throwing.

No one should be overly confident when BYU has laid three eggs in a row to Utah. That said, while Virginia was a bad if not awful loss, beating Texas says a lot more than beating Virginia and then losing to Texas would have. But, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the Utes come in with minds at "ease" rather than the Super Bowl approach they've taken in the last three...

Despite Ute fans' frantic and emotional denials, we'll know that the Utes have "moved on" when they disappear completely from all BYU articles.

The fact that you're here claiming that you've "moved on", while completely ignoring your conference-opening PAC 12 game, is proof positive that U have not, and never will, move on.

I'm going out on a limb and predicting a BYU win in two weeks. Utah hasn't proven anything yet. A tough opener against a decent USU team and a blowout against... Weber? Big deal.

Likewise BYU lost to a weak Virginia and had a big win against a very under performing Texas team. Texas was over rated and the win proves nothing yet.

Anyone can win the rivalry game on any given year. Rankings don't matter, W/L records don't matter. Neither QB is "proven" and both teams have weaknesses that can be used against them.

It will all play out on the field. But I still predict a BYU victory.

Games the Utes have played the week before BYU

2013, Oregon State (if that's not a bye I don't know what is)
2012, USU (usually considered a gimme, but they have been good recently)
    2011, a legitimately difficult opponent
    2010, SDSU

    2006, Air Force

Forgive us ute fans, if BYU has far more respect for Texas than U. One dimensional or not, try and stop it utes. Your defense is weak, and will "bend to our will" just as Texas, who is better up front and in the secondary than U. Btw, for those pointing to Oregon...look at how much they run versus pass...avg 425 a game on the ground. Are they one dimensional, or "bend people to their will" also? All the ute trolls making excuses about byes, one dimensional bologna, Utah can defend the read option...do u realize how scared you sound? Panic is setting in as Utah sees superior athletes to theirs get brutally "curb-stomped" by BYU. That was a spectacular and much needed win. As much fun as it was to watch, I don't know if that's how I want to win though. Take away Hill's rushing TD's and the outcome could have been very different. Hill's not going to get looks like that every game. All it takes is one hit and we're down a QB. Hill desperately needs to work on his accuracy and the receivers need to catch the dang ball. As good as the defense looked, there are obvious signs of weakness at the corner position. Every time Texas needed a big play you knew it was going far left. I cringed every time. Thank heavens for a good safety. I'm worried of a Chuckie Keeton who will pick us apart if our CB's are having a slow day.

Oregon did throttle Virginia. I don't think the Ute fans should crow over that, because a similar fate awaits the Utes... several times this season on national TV. It should really help with recruiting. Don't you love being a member of the PAC-12? The Urban Meyer effect is wearing off. Coach Whit is a good coach, but he has to step up or he'll go the way of Texas' DC. He can run up the score on Weber State all he wants, a potential loss to BYU and another bowl-less season will not go over well with the wealthy and powerful in the Crimson Club.

How's Hill in passing? 122 ranked QB in the nation. That is what KW would describe as abysmal.

    Spokane Ute

Unfortunately for U, your time-line is out of order.

BYU was still adjusting to a new offensive scheme versus Virginia, and a two-hour lightning delay after the 1st quarter, followed by continual rain and a puddle-drenched field through the remainder of the game didn't help with establishing any sort of offensive rhythm.

With a little fine tuning a week later, BYU found its rushing offense against one of the most storied football programs in the country.

With a couple more weeks for BYU to add a passing attack to an obviously very good rushing attack, BYU's offense looks to improve even more for their 3rd game.

Utah will be up for the game, make no mistake. I don't think it's possible not to be. Quite honestly it wouldn't suprise me it Utah beat's BYU, or vice versa. In a rivalry like this it can go either way. Some times one or two plays, or questionable call(s) can make all the difference in the world. We shall see, but right now I'm more concerned with Oregon St. One game at a time.

As far as Oregon vs. Utah goes, let's wait and see. The last time Utah went to Oregon it was a very good and close game. Also, USC was supposed to pound Washington St. Saturday night. How did that work out for the Trojans? Nothing should come as a huge suprise or a gimmie in college football; that's the beauty of it!

  • Just the FAX Olympus Cove, Utah

In last 10 seasons, 7 players have rushed for at least 180 yards vs Texas, two on Saturday:
    - BYU's QB Taysom Hill (259) and RB Jamaal Williams (182).

After playing two FBS opponents, and with most FBS teams still playing the soft portion of their schedule, BYU currently has two of the top five rushers in the country:

    1. Kasey Carrier 345 yds (UNM)
    2. Jamaal Williams 326 yds (BYU)
    3. Andre Williams 318 yds (BC)
    4. Alex Collins 303 yds (Ark)
    5. Taysom Hill 301 yds (BYU)

As incredible as that stat is, this stat may be even more incredible:

At one point in the game versus Texas, BYU ran TWENTY-SEVEN straight rushing plays.

As a team, BYU is 3rd in rushing:

    1. Oregon 425.0 ypg
    2. Wisconsin 390.0 ypg
    3. BYU 368.5 ypg

So how "challenging" do oregon state and usc look now? Weren't those 2 of the 5 "ranked" teams utah "fans" were bragging/whining about playing? osu lost to a 1-aa team, that is right a 1-aa team (lol), and usc just scored a whopping 7 points against one of the worst defenses in the country, one that hadn't given up any fewer than 19 points in a game in several years, and lost. Neither is ranked any longer and neither should be, they are both bad, very bad.

How I think it will go down:

Utah is great at stacking the box and stopping BYU's running game and cause an effective pass rush. They will start out the same again, and Taysom will need to hit some easy passes to get some small yards. Taysom is great at selling his fake handoffs, and he will get some good runs in the first half, but nothing like what we saw against TX. First half will be low scoring, anywhere from 0-14 for either team, but I expect BYU will get a couple field goals, while U will take advantage of weaker secondary and have a couple big plays.

Prediction: U will be up at half (10 to 3)

Second half will be totally different. GFGH will wear down Ute defense, while KVN and company will wear down their offense. By the end of the game, BYU will run at will, and score in dramatic fashion--Ammon Olsen may be utilized for some passing plays in the fourth.

Prediction: BYU wins 52 to 13

Utah will not get to capitalize on BYU slop like the last 3 years. U are KVN's and Hoffman's unfinished business!

I love the BYU/Utah rivalry, and I'll talk some smack just like the next guy, but the way you all attack eachother sounds like a 5th grade fight out in the school yard. GIVE IT A REST!

I am a Utah man through and through, but at least I try to show some class and decency to opposing teams.

Good luck BYU except on the 21st!

Watch out for Tenny Palepoi down there in the trenches, he clogs up the middle to leave the edges guarded by Orchard and Reilly!

    GO UTES!!!!

Travis Wilson is #8 in the nation in pass efficiency... Hill is ranked 122!....Hill is a horrific passer! I take Utah by 2 touchdowns in this game.

It's no secret that the Utes will not let Hill beat them with his feet. He's completed a whopping 33% of his passes on the year. Ha ha!!!! Tim Tebow even has better passing stats than that and he's out of football right now.

    @ekute

I didn't "blow" any horn, I simply pointed out more predictable utah "fan" delusion and hypocrisy.

utah "fans" whining about BYU having a bye before the utah game, as if it was some sort of devious planning in the schedule is ridculous considering utah scheduled itself 7 home games and only 5 road games this year. Was that also underhanded in an attempt to gain advantage? Or how about utah having 5 pac12 home games and only 4 pac12 road games? Yes I know that is a product of a 9 game schedule but still I don't see utah "fans" commenting about that advantage.

It's always the same with utah "fans", whining and lamenting over some other teams supposed "underhanded" advantage while ignoring utah doing similar, if not even more advantageous, things with their schedule.

    LOL!

I'm still trying to decide if a bye week is a good thing or a bad thing for BYU.

Good for healing bumps a bruises, especially for Williams and Hoffman. Good for game plan. Bad for losing momentum from a big win.

In pre-season, I thought Utah would have it's hands full against a tough Beaver squad, but they didn't look good against E. Washington or Hawaii. Saturday should be an easy win for the Utes.

I expect the rivalry game to be within 7 points just like most of the BYU v Utah games the last decade. But I am hoping for a blowout and for BYU to unleash another 500+ yard rushing day!

Nice try in making the BYU fans feel bad. We don't. When you can put a muzzle on Chris B, and Ekute then we may see some more civil dialog but until then see the hatred continue.
I used to be a huge Utah fan and cheered for them regularly. When I started reading these threads my opinion of Utah and their fan changed forever more.

Just as you are red thru and thru, I'm blue thru and thru. I must admit that you do show some class, and it's much appreciated.

There are some hard-core fans (i.e., Chris B) on each side of the red/blue rivalry that go beyond being objective, and which start making it hard to like "the other side". Then occasionally, I read a well thought-out comment like yours coming from that side that helps me to remember that civility in the rivalry is still possible.

    Thanks for doing your part.

That might be the weirdest and most off topic post in the history of the site. What was your point? Are you trying to say wsu has a great defense? They've played 2 games and usc is so obviously bad that utah may have held them to one score also. wsu had not allowed less than 19 points in a game in several years, that means they have had an absolutely horrible defense for all those years. Maybe they might be good this year, maybe, but it is to early to know.

Go back to making sense because you failed miserably here.

9 SEC teams, 8 PAC-12 teams, 9 BIG teams, 7 ACC teams, and 6 Big-12 teams have SOS in the 100's right now. See, how it works in college football is that teams from the big 5 conferences play most of their non-conference games against mid-majors and FCS teams to warm up and get ready for the grind of their conf. schedule. Get back to us in a month and see how the SOS looks then....
