    UTES Win!!!

Congrats to the team! Congrats to Travis Wilson, Carl Williams, Nate Orchard, Andy Phillips and all the guys who EARNED this win.

    Bye-Bye, Chuckie. Thanks for playin'!

Good thing for 15 yard penalties, and trick plays.

Congratulations to both teams on a very entertaining game and (for me) the right team won. I think USU will do very well and make a bowl game this year. As for the Utes, this makes one down and five to go for a bowl game.

Chuckie rocks and was glad to see our defense get a couple of stops late in the game. Wilson looked confident running Utah's offense and looks to be ready for a big improvement this year. Hopefully Kenneth Scott is OK, would be a shame to lose our best receiver in the first game.

    Aug. 29, 2013 10:03 p.m.

Chuckie Keeton is the best quarterback in the state. I've said before that USU will be a greater challenge than BYU. Keeton proves the point.

Nice composure by the Utes to get back in and win. I thought USU went conservative too early. Where was the advertised "up tempo" offense for the Utes? You know you're running it 3 times at the goal line. Didn't make it? Pop back up, set, go!

Great game, Utes! Utah State is excellent, and Keeton is the real deal.

    @worf

Your Cougars should be scared. The Aggies are going to crush you guys.

Thanks Worf. Good luck this weekend! VA was ranked #86 at the end of the season...Utah State #19...(Sagarin). Also thanks for the critique of the officials.
I think Kyle would like you to officiate next years game if you're available.

    Let us know.

I think that this game showed that USU maybe is not as good as advertised. They seemed to be especially gased at the end and playing on the road caused them issues with momentum. I guess now it all comes down to the 21st and then whenever BYU plays USU (Friday in October?) . That will determine who owns the state.

    worf,

What did you expect? The line for this game was only a couple points... it's not like Utah's predicted to be beating down the doors for the national championship, and if you hadn't been paying attention the last 12 months, the QB for Utah State is pretty good and can light up just about any defense.

You also realize the late 1st half TD by Utah State was greatly aided by a missed holding call on the 3rd and long play by Keaton? Funny you don't mention that.

Good showing by Utah, I thought they were going to fold down 23-14, but the defense came up with some big stops, and the coaches made some good calls including the onside kick. Utah State will be fine and I look forward to them playing BYU again.

  • toosmartforyou Farmington, UT

Amazing how these two fan bases have the commonality of bashing the Cougars and claiming the best quarterback in the state is from a school that is 0-1. Wait until after all the intersectional games are over.

Utah didn't win as must as USU lost. Penalties against the Aggies kept two early scoring drives alive, a missed PAT and then receivers on an on-side kick that stood there like their feet were planted in either concrete or quick sand. Add to that the old Aggie special----play not to lose instead of keeping up the heat and playing to win. Once old MO has switched teams, it's pretty tough to get him back onto your side.

As far as being an entertaining game, I thought it really was and I thought it could have easily gone either way. I though USU was going to win until their offense play calling went into the deep freeze. Hopefully they will avoid that in the future (shades of Auburn).

The PAC 12 dodged a bullet tonight, for sure. They looked pretty mediocre most of the game. But they found a way to win.....congratulations.

    There You Go Again

    Saint George, UT

"...The game 8/29 will be a true test for USU.

They will not sneak up on the UTES this year.

They will be facing a highly motivated UTAH team.

    They are favored to win.

    They are ranked.

They have a Heisman Candidate at QB.

    The game is at UTAH.

The game has all the makings of a trap game for USU...".

The game turned out to be a trap game for USU.

As long as Keeton says healthy, USU will be competitive in every game they play this year.

Good Luck to the Aggies the rest of the way.

As Coach Whitt said after the game...

"...We are a very average team...we have a long way to go...".

An impressive interview, after the game with Fitzgerald, the humble young man who took Scott's the injured receivers place.

Stay humble UTAH and work continue to work hard to get better TOGETHER.

    @too smart for you

Why is it that (some) Cougar fans constantly blame a team for losing the game instead of giving credit to the team that executed the on side kick successfully. Heard the same thing a couple of years ago after the 54-10 debacle in Provo. At least you didn't blame the ref's for making obvious calls on USU.

Utah State was a top 25 team last year that retained its' best player. The idea of a narrow Utah win really isn't a bad thing for the team by any stretch (they were 3.5pt favorites after all and won by 4).

    Aug. 29, 2013 11:13 p.m.

Well, CO Ute, I have watched Utah and BYU play every season since 1969 and Utah a couple seasons in the mid-sixties.

I'm an old high school football official and I have a fair knowledge of the game. That being said, there are times when a team is better than they play (they have a let-down) and times they play over their heads. Some teams are great (like Utah when they defeated Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and the 1984 Cougars) and some are average or below. All teams go in cycles; up and down. Some are almost always down. But there are times when your own mistakes are costly. Mental mistakes are huge. Missing a field goal that wasn't blocked, hitting out-of-bounds, jumping off-sides many times in the same game, etc are examples. We've witnessed all of these at Utah and BYU.

USU is the one who shot themselves in the foot; Utah was more poised. That doesn't mean either the victory wasn't deserved or domination by the victor.

Don't lump me in with everyone else and I won't do that to you, ok?

I'm not sure if I admire you Utah fans for your persistence on these message boards or pity you for your obsession of degrading everything to do with BYU. This is especially strange when this article has nothing to do with the Cougars and is posted on perhaps the most conservative media source in the State. All of you look for justifications as to why your team did not win this game easily; after all you were just playing an "inferior conference" opponent. Do any of you realize that this game was very close to being a loss? I suppose that the fanatical Utah followers will never change. It's too bad that USU lost the game, but I guess it is good for the ever-so-mighty Pac-12 Utes to squeak out one of their wins at home because the rest of the games down the road will not come so easily.

@BleedCougarBlue, that USU team is very good. Their QB is the real deal. Your Cougars will be in for all they can handle when they travel up to Logan. The Aggie defense is strong, and if you have any questions about Keeton, just look at his stats from last year, and from tonight's game. BYU will be hard-pressed to win that game up in Logan.

Can someone please tell Whitt that when you need a yard on 3rd and goal from the one yard line to QB sneak it. I mean Utah outweighs USU on the line of scrimmage by 30+ pounds per man. Travis Wilson is 6 foot 6 and 245 pounds. Please QB sneak it.

Going shotgun when you need a yard is overdone by Utah. And yes I put it on Whitt not Erickson there. Ever since Kyle took over, rather it was Ludwig, Chow, Johnson and now Erickson, Utah never QB sneaks it when it's the most obvious way to gain a yard on a smaller and tired team in the second half.

The FG after the failure to punch it in 3 times from a yard out only put Utah up 27-26. A TD would have been huge. For USU, Keeton coming out on second down for cramps was big. There were a lot of plays that where unusual. How about the helmet off rule. I get that for player safety but I don't like the rule despite Utah benefiting from it. Player safety is really important but the rules nowadays are changing the game way to much.

Andy Phillips. WOW! the guy had never played in a football game before. No high school or nothing. He is a soccer goalie and world class skier. Phillips was gigantic tonight. Utah could have used him at USU last year and Colorado the year before. BYU could have used a kicker against Boise State and Utah last year.

With kickers and calls, football is a funny and disappointing game when you lose. Utah earned the win tonight though. Too many aren't giving enough credit to Utah for battling back and fighting hard when down. Utah is a team that is young, injured, and way inexperienced. USU had 18 returning starters and a big time star of a QB in Keeton. Look out BYU, he will light up your secondary as well.

I wish the Aggies well from here on out, but Keeton goes, so does the winning percentage next year.

First ever college football game on Fox Sports 1. Highly entertaining game. Excellent play on both sides. Congrats Utes!

Hoping Kenneth Scott can recover quickly. Note to Chuckie Keeton---you need to be healthy. Without you, I highly doubt the Aggies finish over 0.500. With you, another bowl trip is assured.

And boy, nothing like defying all the DN haters' predictions to bring out the trolls!

BleedCougarBlue, are implying USU is a bad football team? That's odd. They finished ranked last season and they've received lots of votes in the preseason polls. Further, how has BYU faired against USU the last three years? Oh yeah, a loss, a miracle comeback win, and a 6-3 victory. Simply put, I don't think you're giving the Aggies enough credit for being a solid opponent. Yet. I'm guessing when they play BYU later, assuming Chuckie K stays healthy, many Y 'fans' who are downplaying the Aggies tonight will be singing a different tune and talking about them like they are an integral part of BYU's "toughest schedule ever" come October 4th.

    But we'll see.

Guess what pal? If USU didn't like keeping those early drives alive, maybe they should cease making personal fouls. You act like the players had no hand whatsoever in those penalties.

Then again, I wouldn't expect ANYTHING less than the same old "Utah didn't win, so-and-so lost" routine.

USU actually won....the ugly uniform contest. Those shades of gray and blue clashed terribly. Other people I saw part of the game with said the same thing.

USU seemed back to their old ways. They seemed undisciplined too often and played off of emotion, not smarts. They tried too hard to win early and it gassed them. That is a new coach problem. With Keaton, he can't do it all. This is an RGIII situation waiting to happen and Keaton will get hurt. He's a good QB, but can't be expected to do it all.

Fun game, but I feel USU wasn't disciplined too often and Utah totally outcoached USU.

    -------------

Utah State a TD after a 3rd and 16 holding no call, but good teams find ways to win. Is Utah a good team? Too early to tell, I'm hoping to see much more improvement by the Oregon State game.

The defense in particular was horrendous, allowed 400 yards and 23 points with 11 minutes left in the 3rd. And I'm thinking Utah gets routed.

Then a brilliant onside kick call (aka trick play) to steal all the momentum away from Utah State. The rest of the game Utah's defense allowed only 85 yards and 3 points.

Can the real Utah defense please stand up?

"According to some, the Utes never win. The other team always hands them the game on a silver platter. How convenient."

Pot calling the kettle black there - that's exactly what Utah fans were saying after Utah State beat them last year.

The "mighty" PAC 12 Utes barely squeaked past the lowly "WAC" Aggies, at home no less, after giving up 20 unanswered points and trailing for much of the 2nd half.

Giving credit where credit is due: A brilliantly excuted onsides kick was the difference in the game. Kyle rolled the dice a couple of times and came up a winner. The FG that sealed the win for Utah could have been a disaster if the Aggies had blocked it and returned it for a touchdown.

All in all an exciting opening game for both teams. It's too bad the Utes are too chicken to continue playing a home and home with the Agggies.

Wac'd last year and almost McWc'd this year.

17-14 at the half and I know everyone of U were biting your nails and in anguish over what had just happened. So funny to see U guys have to run through these emotions.

Entertaining game. Congrats Utes, you pulled off a near miracle. When Erickson was on the sidelines I thought he was going to have a stroke from the look on his face.

That onside kick was a mad desperation play and luckily it changed the momentum of the game for U.

Utes have far to go. After all of the emotion that was spent last night look for a letdown.

Pretty entertaining game. I give credit to Utah, they made plays down the stretch. Having said that, this seems like a game where you say "a win is a win." Meaning, the Aggies dominated much of the game, but penalties and turnovers (including the onside kick) killed them. Keeton is a great QB, but the Utes have some problems in the secondary and the O-line. I think the Utes will be very lucky to get to 6 wins this year.

I'm not sure us BYU fans have much room to talk here. Both teams looked good in some areas and bad in others, but it was the first game. I see both games against USU and Utah to be very similar. Keeton is amazing, and Wilson ain't shabby either. BYU will have their hands full with both teams this season, and with the USU game in Logan, that's going to be a very tough game to win. I would say that since Utah is playing in Provo, we have the advantage, but that hasn't mattered in recent years. Whit still has our number.

I think I remember Matt Leinart saying something like "At least we didn't have to face Utah State!" during one of USC's championship runs.

Hey, Ute fans, a win's better than the alternative. But this kind of win should also be a pretty sobering reminder of your team's place in the pecking order. If you're going to beat your chests about "earning" a Pac-12 invitation, you need to beat USU at home by a couple of TD's at least. I see four more wins on your schedule. Good luck.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable game to watch. Both Utah State & Utah should be commended for not disappointing.

For both teams the end result is a good news, bad news situation. As expected Utah's offense looks improved, with a much greater propensity for quick strike big plays...very much lacking last year. Same with Utah State, Chuckie looks to be improved from how good he was last year. Now the bad news. Utes, your defense gave up 300+ yards in the FIRST HALF. USU was doing what they wanted, when they wanted for a large portion of this game...that has to improve when the utes face much more potent offenses than Utah State. Same goes for Utah state...two blown coverages and slow reads by safeties to give up huge chunks of yards.

In the end, I think both of these teams are better offensively than last year, but the defenses looked flat out awful...they will have to improve if these teams want success this year. Congrats to Utah, gutsy call by KW and perfect execution on the onside kick...thing of beauty.

Utah pulled out a nail biter! Keeton and USU are a team to be reckoned with! They will push all teams to the limit. Utah has its work cut out for it this season, no doubt. Defense is sub par as expected, offensive line needs work. They need to control the trenches and open holes. Whittingham needs to put players on the field that will make plays. Karl Williams did it and deserves playing time, and perhaps Troy McCormick or Dre'Vian Young in the backfield. Need speed in the backfield. I believe they can fix yesterday's game mistakes in the next two games before conference play begins. However, I question Utah's defensive coaching approach. USU looked more organized and stout in their defensive attack. Very aggressive. Utah didn't. They reacted slowly to USU's offensive attack and couldn't stop USU most of the game. Their offense is a TRUE no-huddle. Utah's defense is not like it use to be...but hey, good victory for Utah!

So beyond the chest thumping and over the top rhetoric what do utah "fans" really think about their team and that game?

    My thoughts.

utah's defense is not good. secondary is bad and the LB's are worse. D-line was ok.

wilson is improved. I thought he made some nice throws when he had time, he wasn't nearly as good when he was pressured.

utah o-line is not good, at least not yet. Perhaps they get better but they did not protect wilson well and they could not open a hole on 3 straight plays from the 1. It was only the 1st game though.

whittingham did what he had to do. Looking a loss in the face and his team not performing well he called the onside, that was a bold/desperate call, and it worked. Give him credit for it but I think it shows his desperation for the season as well. He is very nervous about his team.

I heard scott broke his leg and is done for the season, that is a shame, but does anyone know what happened to york? He didn't even play in the 2nd half.

    duckhunter,

I agree with your assessment for the most part. Utah's defense has a long way to go especially in the secondary. I was actually somewhat satisfied with the LBs considering they were chasing one of the most elusive QBs in the country all night. For the most part USU had no run game outside of Keaton.

The thought the O-line was bad but Hans Olson blamed most of the USU penetration in the the backfield on Utah RBs not picking up the blitz. It was embarrassing that Utah couldn't punch it in the end zone from the 2 yard line. What is your assessment of BYU. I think they will struggle this year 7-5, 6-6.

Great game last night. Both teams played well. Chuckie is the real deal, but the U qb played great in the 2nd half. Just a simple observation is that USU and BYU suffer from the same thing when playing the U. Stupid penalties! Granted that the phantom crack-back penalties were a joke and the guy making a play without a helmet was a joke too, but the late hits out of bounds are things you can't do.

Utah doesn't make those mental mistakes and they won. Great job on a great game.

I'm waiting for BYU to play before I make an assessment, I need to actually see them first. My concerns for them are the o-line and the corners, other than those 2 positions they should be solid, but of course I need to see them first.

And I don't make very many predictions, at least not specific ones. I will tell you this, I expect BYU will be above .500 and play in a bowl game, I think utah will have a hard time doing the same although I am not dismissing them from doing so. Winning the game last night was a very big deal for utah on that front, there are not many, if any, guaranteed wins on their schedule other than weber. I think they could lose every other game they play, not saying they will just that they can, so they needed to win that game, and they did.

Ok, I can't let this go. Ute fans talking about BYU only beating USU 6-3 last year. C'mon guys...BYUs defense didn't give up 400 yards to 1 player! Let alone nearly 500 total offense. The fact Utah's defense made Chuckie look like Johnny Manzeil just states how much better BYUs defense is than Utah's. As a Cougar fan, I'm certainly worried about our offense and we need more than 6 points this year to beat the Aggies. But pointing to a game where BYU completely SHUT DOWN Chuckie isn't a good example of how USU will beat BYU. If the Aggies are going to beat BYU they will have to stop their offense, because Chuckie isn't getting all those yards and success against the defense from Provo. If BYUs offense hasn't improved, I can certainly see USU having success, but they aren't going to run roughshod over BYUs defense. Just sayin...that's reality. Congrats to Utah, but taking shots at the team that actually shut down USU stating how "USU will smack them down...blah blah" just isn't realistic.

    Duckhunter,

I agree, our team has a lot of work to do. We were bad in the red zone and on third downs just like last season. That has to improve as does our o-line's run blocking. Our d-backs were bad and will get eaten alive in the Pac 12. I've wondered since day one about the wisdom of hiring Shah to coach the d-backs with no prior coaching experience at this level. In short, we have work to do before we can effectively face our conference opponents.

Good game to watch. Chuckie Keeton and Trevor Reilly are studs. A few others were pretty impressive as well. The onside kick couldn't have been executed any better for Utah. Not the same can be said for USU. The goal line stand by USU should be embarrassing to any PAC-12 program. Utah's new kicker showed signs of Louis Sakoda.

The PAC homer on TV (Apadakas opolis, or whatever his name is) made a telling observation in the 2nd half that will likely be the downfall of the Utes in the PAC. He said something to the effect that Utah SHOULD BE bigger, faster, stronger and Utah State should be the ones worn out in the 2nd half, not the other way around. Not my words. His.

And, what a clueless officiating crew. They made bad calls ON BOTH SIDES, although I think some of the terrible calls hurt USU more. They had to have a conference and decide which direction was up on almost everything they called. They were definitely PAC-12 caliber officials (that's bad for those without their head in the sand) even though I know they weren't from the PAC.

You guys need to take a deep breath and realize you were very, very lucky to pull out that win last night. Stang08 still contends that the Aggies will lose 99 of 100 games to the Utes. Now that's truly a LOL. Show a hint of humility. If that game last night was played in Logan, the Aggies would've won by double digits. And if the same 2 teams played 5 times this year, the Aggies would definitely win 3 of them.

Even Kyle said after the game that he wasn't so sure the Utes deserved to win that game. And neither were most of the people watching on TV. Getting fortuitous calls from the refs (even the TV announcers said as much) and having to count on a trick play to squeak out a win does NOT make you world beaters. If anything, more people than before are now questioning how good the Utes actually are. Last night's game was entertaining, but the way it was won was truly not all that impressive. * What if Utah would have scored that touchdown instead of kicking the field goal?
    * What if Utah or USU didn't fumble?
    * What if Chucky Keeton would have turned pro last year?
    * What if USU's receivers didn't catch all the balls thrown to them?

Penalties, coaching, turnovers, on side kicks and a little luck are part of all games. None of them alone had full responsibility for a win or a loss.

My Utes won this year. Get over it and no more excuses. It was a great game.

It's really pathetic that you make erroneous judgements about how everyone living in Cache County has to be only Aggie fans. And I admit I truly am whenever they play Utah. Big time. In fact, I'm also a big fan of whoever Utah is playing that particular week. And I'm convinced more than ever that the Aggies are better than Utah and will finish with twice as many wins as the Utes.

If you had spent nearly as much time reading posts as you do writing them, you'd have known long ago that I'm a die-hard Cougar fan who can hardly wait to listen to your funny stuttering and excuses after the game on September 21st. So save your silly LOL's and "pathetic" accusations for a few more weeks. The excuses you make after that game will actually show you and all other trolls what the term pathetic actually means.

Not a single Ute poster (not even Chris B.) has given any indication that we're going to march our way straight to the National Championship this year. So turn the page, it's getting old real fast. That being said, by way of fact - the words "National Championship this year" have actually flown out of Bishop Mendenhall's mouth. That, I have zero respect for. He could learn a lot from listening to Coach Whit's comments to the media. Ever classy, ever humble. And for certain, talk of National Championship is simply trash until the Y figures out how to produce a W on Sept. 21st. Best of luck with Virginia on the road Saturday. GO UTES

    @UteForLyf:

You still don't understand. The team with the most points always wins, but the best team doesn't always win. That's why they are called "upsets".
Sometimes a few good breaks... whether from a fortuitous bounce of the ball or a questionable call from a ref will change the outcome of a game in favor of a team that would usually lose that matchup.
Even Kyle said post-game that Utah was outplayed in most aspects of last night and was very fortunate to have won. It was obvious he wouldn't want to give the Aggies a rematch.
Another example. BYU had better stats in their game with Utah last year but didn't win... They had more first downs, more yardage, etc.. Utah fans felt so lucky to have won that they literally stormed the field 3 different times afterward. Their own actions made it seem and feel like the better team didn't win. But on September 21st they will. But go ahead and gloat until then. Revenge will be even sweeter.

I will admit it later if I am wrong. I will say though that BYU will beat Utah and Utah State this year. And I think the Utah State game will be closer than the Utah game. Playing in Logan in that small place, especially if for any reason it gets cold by then makes for a tough place to play. Utah played alright last night, a lot of helpful penalties on behalf of Utah State kept several Utah drives going. That's part of the game, but Utah fans, don't be to high, you all got out played last night. Good win for you but it makes for a 4-8 season at best maybe a 6-6 season, 3-6 PAC-10*. And the only way you are getting 6-6 is if you beat BYU and I just don't see it happening. BYU gets even an extra week to prepare for you. Your batch of wins comes to end, I am not even a cougar fan, just live here and support them over the Utes because of their fans. Don't like them. No, you don't understand. The team with fewer errors and more points is still the best team. You can argue it all you want, but when we look back at the overall, the only thing that matters is the score on the board. And since you brought it up, how do you justify away a 31-17 beating of Alabama to a few fortuitous bounces or a quenstionable call? On that night, Utah was the better team. Last night against the Aggies, Utah made errors, the Aggies made errors, there were bad or non-calls for both teams, but at the end of the night only one team came out on top. That was the Utes. Therefore, last night they were the better team. Last year against BYU, you may have had better overall stats, but you lost on the same stat you always lose to Utah, turnovers. We capitalized, scored 17 in the 3rd quarter and won. Therefore, that night we were the better team.

Next time you want to give the rankings and voters credit you probably should remember all of those higher rankings the voters have given BYU during the Bronco/whittingham era. You won't though, you only try to use that "logic" when you think it makes your argument.

    LOL!

    ------------

BYU was the better team in 2006, 2007, and 2009. Ironically, those were the same three years you beat us on the field.

    On a side note:

Ute Nation welcomes Kyle Kuzma to Ute Basketball!! Great pick up!

    Go UTES!

@Duckhunter: I can clearly see the end of the first quarter score of 0-0. Seems that higher powers have stepped in to bail your team out. I hope they can get it together.

Impressed with Andy Phillips and Travis Wilson. Just need the D to fall in to place. GO UTES!
