Sorry, but by leaving off Gifford Nielsen, this list lost much of its
SoCal, he finished his college career 36 years ago.
As far as BYU QBs go, the order should be:1. Jim McMahon2.
Steve Young3. Ty Detmer4. Robbie Bosco5. Marc Wilson6.
Steve Sarkisian7. Gifford Nielsen8. Gary Sheide9. John Beck10. Max Hall11. Brandon DomanAlex Smith would be after
Gifford Nielson on that list with Brian Johnson and Scott Mitchell after Max
btw, 35 years is an arbitrary and silly cut off point, especially in light of
the fact that it occurs during the middle of the BYU QB factory heyday.
BlueCoug, I agree with you. BYU and USU didn't really have any great ones
before the 70s and Utah had only one in Lee Grosscup. Nielsen and Grosscup would
easily replace a few on this list.
How about Josh Heupel? He played at Snow College and eventually won the Heisman
Also, this list should just be called the best QBs from Utah, USU or BYU. Jamie
Martin was a fantastic QB.
Thought this would be interesting. Heisman voting results over the years.Shide - 8thNelson - 6thWilson - 3rdMac - 5Mac -
3Young - 2Bosco - 3Bosco - 3Ty - 9Ty - 1Ty -
3Smith - 4Based on historical results an argument can be
made for BYU having the top 5 spots and Smith being 6th. One surprise to me is
that Sark won the Davey O'Brien and Staley won the Doak Walker yet neither
got any Heisman votes. Pathetic. Also a surprise that Hall and Beck did not
get any with stats like they had. Brian Johnson is definitely too high on
this list. He did not make many mistakes but he was not a top flight QB. he
was a game manager. For the USU fan here, Calvillo has done great in
the CFL but that is like saying that a triple A baseball pitcher with 30 wins is
better than 20 wins in the majors. I am Canadian but in know that the CFL is
the minor leagues.
