    Dear Utes:

The game against Utah State is no longer a "Gimme", a win will have to be earned. Chuckie Keeton is not only the best quarterback in the state, but in the country as well. Please try to win a few games in the PAC 12 so you don't continue to hurt our strength of schedule at BYU.

    Thanks and good luck

Uncle Rico, I don't disagree with you that Utah State is a bigger worry for the Utes than is BYU.

Don't over look my Cougs! They will have a much better offense and quarterback then they have had recently and the Defense will be strong and have a chip on their shoulder this year wanting to break the streak before the two year hiatus in the Holy War!!!

    Go Cougs!!!
    Go Utes except Sept.21st

I think this will be a relatively easy win. Yes, we struggled last year. We probably overlooked usu a little since they hadn't given us a challenge in 20 years. Aggies had a fun little year last year.

But they're got WAC talent on a WAC/MWC team. We'll be fine.

    GO Utes!

Chris B, who is this "we" you're talking about? Are you on the team? It doesn't seem like you learned your lesson last year about overlooking USU, hopefully for Utah's sake, they don't make the same mistake you are by overlooking USU again.

I'm gong to make one prediction, right here and now...so "mark it down". Utah will upset Stanford in RES. I called it when Utah beat Alabama in the sugar bowl and I'm calling this for the same reason. Football is a game of matchups, and Stanford is similar to Alabama in their offensive and defensive philosophies. Stanford depends on being able to run the football effectively (plays right into Utah's strength on defense). Stanford wins with hard nosed play in the trenches (plays right into Utah's hands...trenches will be Utah's strength this yr).

I don't know how the rest of the season will go (after losing to BYU of course lol), but Utah will beat Stanford at home. You heard it here first.

The Utes will not overlook USU this year. Like the saying goes It's not a rivalry until the other team wins, well they poked the bear and now will get his anger. I think this could get ugly, Utah is not happy how the game ended last year and want some revenge. I think Utah could win by 14 or more.

I will be there to see if it happens and look forward to a very exciting season. GO UTES!!

Come September 21st, there's going to be a lot of weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth by the ignorantly blissful hill crowd. Ignorant bliss will quickly turn to shock and dismay.

Utah had this game circled a while back. USU used to be looked on similar to the Idaho State's of the world. Utah will be prepared this year with a healthy quarterback, a good defense, better offensive line and the game is in SLC. I expect to see the Aggie section in the Southwest end zone to be half full of blue and the rest in red.

It should be a great game. My Utes will win.

Utah should be worried with USU and BYU. That will account for two of their early loses and will keep them squarely in the basement of the PAC, again.
Can't wait for the season to begin. USU's Chuckie will eat up the soft Utah defense and BYU defense will eat up the soft Utah offense. It's a perfect storm.

So, Chrissy, assuming (and I emphasize assuming) your utes get the win on the 21st, you would agree that it was a win over a real soft cupcake. You know, the kind your utes like to pad their schedule with.

On the other hand, when (and I emphasize when) your utes get beat on the 21st by this soft cupcake, that will end up being a real hard pill to swallow. Correct??

In other words, in your world (and I emphasize YOUR world) there is not a whole lot to gain, but an awful lot to lose no matter what the outcome is. Correct??

Or is this logic all too hard for you to follow?

@midwacmajor: "a lot of weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth by the ignorantly blissful". A perfect description of the aftermath of the last three Holy Wars! I love all these BOLD predictions by the southies every year.

Besides, "ignorantly blissful" perfectly describes 9/10ths of all byU "fans". You know, the ones that: wear "Quest for Perfection" on their chests; storm the airport after they are 1-0 with aspirations of NC; think that a #25 ranking in one poll with a SOS at 80 means something; think byU has the better team every year regardless of the outcome on the field; etc.

I do like Cougs prediction though. He must be part of the other 1/10th!!

The worm is about to turn. As the saying goes, "revenge is a dish best served cold".

It's going to be a cold day in September for the stunned, shell-shocked Utes.

At least Hill was smart enough to plan a bye week for AFTER the BYU game, to give his team time to recover from the devastation.

  • Christy B Salt Lake City, Utah
    Aug. 19, 2013 3:10 p.m.

The unfortunate truth little sister is:

Our freshman are about to begin a career-long winless streak versus BYU.

While we beat our chests about a four-year winning streak versus our rivals, which, incidentally, will never happen, we completely ignore the fact that BYU just completed a four-year AP Top 25 streak, an achievement that is inconceivable for our sorry program. In fact, the U has never had more than two AP Top 25 finishes in row, EVER.

Except for a couple of recent lucky skin-of-our-teeth wins, and a couple of quickly fading flash-in-the-pan seasons, nothing much has changed, except we now play our bowl game versus BYU in September, rather than November.

If we're lucky, we'll be able to squeak past Weber State to avoid an in-state SWEEP by our neighbors.

At least we'll have comfy couches in our new football facility from which to watch bowl week.

The game 8/29 will be a true test for USU.

They will not sneak up on the UTES this year.

They will be facing a highly motivated UTAH team.

    They are favored to win.

    They are ranked.

They have a Heisman Candidate at QB.

    The game is at UTAH.

The game has all the makings of a trap game for USU.

    Rockwell:

Love your optimism. I really respect you being behind your team. Unfortunately for you, the game is played on the field. The Utes are very comfortable with fielding all the doomsday predictions from our little brothers over the years and proving them wrong. This year will just be another one of those years.

byU "fans" predict a slaughter every year, and have been sorely disappointed for the vast majority of the last twenty years, including three straight. byU "fans" crowed that Utah would get annihilated by Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. Well we ALL know how that turned out! byU "fans" have created so much spin on that topic that you could power a B-52 around the world and back again. But it still doesn't change the facts that Utah isn't phased by hype! What happened when Utah encountered the king of Hype? Utah won 54-10 and the little brothers got free turnovers. byU "fans" ran around with "Quest" t-shirts, but it was Utah that perfected that Quest.

You may hope that the worm will turn, but in reality, it will get squashed before your very eyes.

    Go Utes! Come on 8/29!

Losses to a MWC school or an Independent can't put Utah squarely in the basement of the PAC12. Just my take. The last time Utah lost to both schools in the same year wss 1996.

@Chris B, Don't jinx us. There is only one guaranteed win on Utah's schedule in 2013. Maybe we should wait until we actually see this Utah team play before we start making any predictions.

Reno Cougs Fan 68 says "Don't over look my Cougs! They will have a much better offense and quarterback then they have had recently and the Defense will be strong and have a chip on their shoulder this year"
I understand that the Cougs are desperate to win against Utah this year. But they're breaking in a new system against Virginia and Texas before they can get to Utah. They can't look ahead. What happened the last time BYU played Utah after playing Texas?

Utah State has a new head coach, but hired from within. The team is pretty much in tact, and all of fall camp they've been able to focus on their first opponent. The Aggies are more dangerous.

  • Steven S Jarvis Orem, UT
    Aug. 19, 2013 8:59 p.m.

Frankly the Aggies are more dangerous to the Utes than the Cougars. While I believe both teams should beat Utah, BYU always seemed to get the best out of Utah. That is why the rivalry game was so great. Ute players got pounded and limped off the field to only return a few plays later and score. They overachieved by tapping into some deep mana pool beating BYU in years that the Cougars were clearly the better squad. The Utes also won the games when they were supposed to win.

USU is another matter altogether. The Utes are in the cross hairs of Keaton and company, and it is they who are seeking vindication for how they have been treated since beating Utah. Utah will be much easier for USU to open at than Auburn or Wisconsin. Those places host twice the fans. USU came in those games and almost came out the winner. Utah isn't going to be so lucky.

Taking an article about the Aggies and Utes and spitting out comments about the Cougars and Utes.....again? Seriously people, give it up. I suggest you all look up a word: obsession. "We don't care about the Utes anymore. Why? Because we won a national championship 30 years ago so that makes us better than U."

And "We don't care about playing the Cougars anymore because we're in the PAC." Yet here you both are. You just can't give it up or accept the fact that neither of you will ever win. Humorous, but childish nonetheless.

The Longhorn Harrison Independent Study Program fiasco was caused entirely by Texas trying to bully BYU into changing the rules (which rules, incidently, were precipitated, by the NCAA, NOT BYU).

    SoonerUte

The Utes would do well to follow their own advice about looking forward. The last time the Utes were caught looking forward to BYU, the Aggies shocked the over-confident Utes.

This year the pressure is all on the Utes; lose to Utah State and Utah's bowl chances could be over in the first week of the season. Lose to Utah State, and the Utes are faced with an absolute must win scenario against BYU.

btw, aren't the Utes also breaking in a new offensive system?

Sorry to burst your BYU hating crimson bubble, but BYU isn't scared of Texas. The Cougars respect the Longhorns as an opponent, but BYU is prepared to play just as physical as Texas.

    jeru0455

In 1964, Utah won their first WAC championship, cracked the Coaches Poll for the first time, and won their 2nd bowl game. BYU had never won a conference championship, been ranked or played in a bowl, and had only beaten the Utes twice.

By the time Utah won their 2nd WAC championship, BYU had won 18 WAC championships, including 10 in a row, had been ranked in the AP and Coaches polls 10 times, including back-to-back Top 7 finishes, had won a Consensus National Championship, a Heisman Trophy, numerous national individual awards, and had beaten Utah 18 of 20 times from 1972 to 1991, including 27-0, 56-6 and 56-28 back-to-back-to-back.

Don't be so certain that Utah's puny little 3-game winning streak (two by the skin of your teeth) is all that significant.

  • DeepBlue Anaheim, CA

The Harrison matter is all in the hands of the NCAA now; they'll decide whether BYU was correct or not in rescinding the credit. Either way, BYU will be vindicated because it was the NCAA that sparked the initial rule change to not allow athletes to use BYU Independent Study courses for NCAA eligibility credit.

Much to your chagrin, any "ill feelings" between BYU and Texas will be quickly forgotten as soon as the game starts. The huge chip on the shoulder you're hoping Texas will be carrying will turn out to be nothing but a crimson-colored figment of your imagination.

    -----------

    What years would that be?

Since 1996 the only time Utah has trailed BYU by more than 7 points was in the 2009 game. Down 14 in the 4th Utah rallied under a freshman QB. Only to lose in OT when two Utah NFL players missed a tackle.

And that was your best team (AP #12) in the BCS era, which was slightly better than our AP #18 team that year. BYU is 3-8 in the BCS era against Utah... that's called being OWNED.
