I do find preseason polls interesting but we all know that they are really not
too meaningful. I hope all the Utah teams do surprisingly well this year!
Wouldn't it be awesome to have two or more Utah teams ranked in the top 25
at the end of the year?
BYU should be ranked in the top 15 if not the top 10.
It remains to be seen how many ranked teams BYU, Utah, and USU will actually
face.Last year at this time, everybody expected Utah to face a Top
10, possibly even a #1-ranked, USC, and BYU was scheduled to play unranked Utah
State and San Jose State.Preseason polls and SOS rankings are fun
topics for discussion, but they're notoriously inaccurate.
BYU and USU have a legitimate chance of being ranked, but I guess that Kralon is
counting Weber State as a third Utah team with a chance of being ranked at the
end of the year?
Oregon and Stanford are the only teams deserving Top 25 rankings. The others
couldn't even win their bowl games against inferior teams. Come week ten
we'll see who the real teams are. Coaches will always vote their conference
teams and opponents in the top 25 to help inflate the conference strength and
Brutal schedule. Several chances for Utah to prove itself. Gone are the days
of 2 game schedules (TCU and BYU) .@VladhagenBYU and USU
have a legitimate chance of being spanked if Utah is a 7-5 team.
The more comments I read, the more I come around to the idea that utah should
not play BYU. Even when Utah wins 3 straight over BYU, Cougar fans can't
stop claiming that BYU is the better team. Based on pulling off a bowl victory
There appears to be a strong probability that UT's team will suffer a
majority of losses in their contests against the nationally ranked teams in this
article. It's good though because the only way to improve programs is to
play superior competition on a regular basis. They may never be able to recruit
the talent it takes to be national contenders on a regular basis but their
programs should benefit from playing nationally ranked teams.
Utah schedule is very exciting!9 of their 12 teams received
votes.Number 3, 4, 21, 24, 25, 32, 35, 36, 42Only
Washington state, Colorado and weber state aren't listed. And the
Washington state game will be exciting because of coach leach's air raid
offense. So 10 games that any fan would be excited to watch.Go utes!
UteMiguelGo Utes, CA"The more comments I read, the more I
come around to the idea that utah should not play BYU. Even when Utah wins 3
straight over BYU, Cougar fans can't stop claiming that BYU is the better
team. Based on pulling off a bowl victory over SDSU?"Waaaaah!
Mom, they keep saying they're better than we are! Make em stop!Waiting for Utah fans to unilaterally proclaim that two years ago, Colorado
was obviously the superior team. In fact, answer me this. And I really
don't know because it has to be a super sloooooow news day for the Cougars
before I will go read something on the Utes side of the boards. When was the
last time Colorado fans got on Ute articles to proclaim their undeniable
superiority?Look, you got scoreboard. Enjoy it for six weeks. But
if head to head was the only thing that mattered, then Johnny Football would be
a returning National Champ. As it is, all he has is this thing called a
Heisman. Because those matter too.
I hate that rankings come out so early. It allows bigger name schools an
advantage by being high to begin with so they can stay high with a couple of
early losses, while other programs have to fight and claw to 11-12 win seasons
just to be ranked in the top 15. I think rankings shouldn't come out until
the 8th or 9th week of the season. I know the BCS already does this but
it's 2/3 human voter bias. NO polls until 8-9 weeks, when we can see who
the best teams are, not predicate rankings on hype. That said,
I'm happy my Dawgs are #5, but I'm still trying to figure out why. I
guess returning only 4 starters on defense, and missing your best WR are recipes
for success? Anyway, cheers to all the Utah programs this yr. These schedules
make it put up or shut up for all the big 3 programs. GO COUGS! And best of luck
to the utes and aggies as well.
Re: Y Dad Grad"Waaaaah! Mom, they keep saying they're
better than we are! Make em stop!"Not a bad idea (the stop
part). However, the Utes keep beating you and you've had a ridiculously
easy schedule. I'd say that it's not 1984 any more, but you
weren't that good then either. And the entire sports world confirmed that.
ImaCaManTalk about ridiculously easy schedules:BYU faced
FIVE Top 25 opponents in 2012, including one of the BCS championship game
teams.Utah only played TWO Top 25 opponents in 2012.Average SOS can be deceiving.Playing two opponents ranked #29 and
#31 would give you an average SOS of #30.Playing two opponents ranked #1
and #59 would give you an identical average SOS of #30.If you were
an FBS head coach, which schedule would you rather play if you absolutely had to
win both games to save your job?
The utah fans crying about BYU claiming superiority over utah, are the same ones
claiming BYU really didn't win a National Championship. Huh??
This post has nothing to do with which team is better, just a thought that you
can't really compare results based on the schedule. USU has 2 top teams
and a lot of below average teams on the schedule. Using the USA Today review
(simply because the have ranked over 80 teams so far and provides a good
reference), BYU will play 4 potential top 25 teams, GT should be between 30 and
40. USU are both rated around 60. Houston, Nevada, Virginia and MTSU are
between 70 and 80. Idaho State isn't in the top 100. Basically, using the
USA Today review, 5 good teams, 2 average strength teams, and 5 teams below
average. USU's schedule is less difficult than BYU's
schedule which is less difficult than Utah's schedule.
BYU has the toughest schedule and will still win the most games.
CO UteSummarizing:An opponent that is ranked higher is
considered to be a BETTER team than an opponent that is ranked lower?A good team (Top 25) is BETTER than an average team which is BETTER than a
below average team? Thanks for clarifying that.
I think I'm in love with Mildred!Go Utes!
Talkinsports,You can play all the Top 25 teams you want, but you get
no more respect than Savannah State if you don't beat them. In 2012, BYU
beat exactly one of the five T25 teams it played (at home and by the skin of
their teeth, I might add). Probably will have a similar outing this year. USU,
on the other hand, also played five T25 teams in 2012, and beat 3 of them, two
by large margins.Co Ute, how do you figure USU to be "around
60?" The USA Today poll has them ranked at #35, just ahead of #36 BYU.
Both teams will probably be about as good as they were last year, +/- a win or
loss. Splitting hairs over whose schedule is better, especially between BYU and
USU (I think we can all agree that Utah's schedule is pretty clearly
tougher than either, unless some real head-scratchers occur), a full month
before anyone even takes the field, is utterly pointless.
Aggie238"BYU beat exactly one of the five T25 teams it
played..."BYU's one Top 25 win over #16 was still better
than Utah State's one Top 25 win over #21."You can play all
the Top 25 teams you want, but you get no more respect than Savannah State if
you don't beat them."Actually, BYU got a lot of respect by
severely challenging Top 25 teams, losing to three of them on the road by a
total of 10 points.Proof of the respect BYU received can be found in
the final Sagarin rankings:USU(11-2) #19, SOS #97BYU(8-5) #26,

Barely. That and a bad case of bed sores, or the couch equivalent. "I'd say that it's not 1984 any more, but you weren't that
good then either. And the entire sports world confirmed that."Explains why the entire sports world, except those living at the center of the
universe up on the hill, crowned us National Champs then. And why the coaches
think a team that had zero offense last year will still finish in the top 1/4.
Where did they pick U to finish???But hey, you got scoreboard. For
now. And one brutal schedule.
Long gone are the WAC and MWC days when either team might not even play any
other ranked team in a year (except when Utah played BYU).Independence and PAC 12 membership are great benefits to both programs.
Congrats to both AD's for their vision.
@Kralon"Wouldn't it be awesome to have two or more Utah teams
ranked in the top 25 at the end of the year?"I agree and both
BYU and Utah State are likely to do just that!
UofU91 - maybe you should re read the post. The basis of the comment was you
can't compare results when the schedules vary so much. Utah plays 8 above
average teams, BYU plays 5 above average teams and USU plays 3 above average
teams based on the preseason reviews. As noted by other posters, the
Y has done a good job playing a very mediocre schedule and still been considered
a top 40 team at the end of the year. Even by upgrading some games this year,
they still have a very average SOS for 2013.
CO Ute"...the Y has done a good job playing a very mediocre
schedule and still been considered a top 40 team at the end of the year."But, BETTER than Utah.Frankly, BYU's 2012 schedule (#63
SOS in Sagarin) wasn't much easier than Utah's (#41), and with five
Top 25 opponents, versus only two for Utah, the upper half of BYU's
schedule was much tougher. There was a much larger difference in final results
and rankings, however, with BYU(8-5) finishing #26 and Utah(5-7) finishing #61
in the final rankings.BYU has been a Top 30 team for most of the
last 10 years. During the Bronco/Kyle era, BYU has averaged a higher
ranking and Utah has averaged a slightly tougher schedule. Unfortunately for U,
they don't award trophies for SOS.Rankings, however, are based
on record versus SOS.Average Sagarin Ranking and SOSDuring the Independence/PAC eraBYU #30, #77 SOSUtah #50, #45
