Jay Ambrose has to be one of the most uninformed journalist around. An article
a few years ago, published by the "Daily Green", identified Reagan as
only 2nd to George W. Bush as the worst president on environmental issues. He
reduced federal enforcement on environmental crimes by 75 percent, reduced EPA
budgets, and opened up more leases for coal mining. Of course if you view of
environmental protection as evil you can rationalize a number of things.
I don't know of any Pres. that is for the people. May be Kennedy.
Wow! I've never read a more inaccurate op-ed! The Koch Bros couldn't
have been worse.
Reagan dismantled much of Carter's government initiatives on renewable
energy and energy efficiency with the Dept. of Energy, even going so far as to
take the solar panels off the White House. Many saw solar and efficiency as a
sign of America's weakness...I've read many a commentary
speculating that had Carter's renewable energy initiatives and research and
development had been left to grow from the 1970s -- rather than having had it
get cut off in the Reagan years -- today we could be much further along on our
energy independence and in a very different place in terms of world affairs.
Would we have had to go to war in Iraq in 1990 over oil? Would Bin
Laden have had his family's oil wealth to enact terror on America had
efficiency measures radically reduced America's need for Mideast oil?
Would fracking have been perfected much sooner to help America move into natural
gas for its transportation? Would electric cars and charging stations have been
perfected by now? Perhaps it is all speculation, but Reagan's
radical elimination of government research on renewable energy and efficiency
has seriously delayed key energy breakthroughs to this day.
With literacy and media records, it's going to be tough going to rewrite
history to fit the conservative agenda.
Wow! Are we talking about the same Reagan who made James Watt his
Secretary of the Interior, a man so disdainful of the environment that his
appointment can only be analogous to making Joseph Goebbels the Prime Minister
of Israel?Political spin and the rewriting of history has sunk to a
Reagan had a Secretary of the Interior, James Watt, who wanted to shut down all
governmental efforts to clean up the environment. Watt believed that the Second
Coming was about to happen, and that spending time and money cleaning things up
was therefore unnecessary.
The Solar panels Reagan removed are on exhibition in China! That says it all
Well, more right wing boilerplate from the D-News. Can't the D-news
consider guest editorials from people with an agenda different from their own?
This is satire, right? Like Swift's "A Modest Proposal"? Say
something completely outrageous with a straight face and see how many people
take it at face value?I was taking a public finance and budget class
in grad school in 1982. At the time the prof was teaching the conventional
wisdom that no agency could weather a 10% budget cut and still maintain
function. That same semester OMB Director David Stockman was proposing to slash
EPA budgets upwards of 20%.Does Ambrose remember Reagan's
environmental luminary Ann Burford Gorsuch?
After the last 11 comments lets put some stable thought into this. Without
Reagan and his ability to understand liberty and the free Market you are right
all our major cities would be in collapse, our infrastructure would be failing
and all those electric cars would be sitting in garages uncharged.
