This is what happens when you "run out of other people's money."
Some of the comments by the TV talking heads are hilarious.Shame on those
people who voted with their feet and fled the high taxes, crime and bad schools
of Detroit.I'd really like to know where Melissa Harris-Perry and Ed
Schultz live. I'm going to guess it looks more like Obama's Kenwood
than the ghetto. Practice what you preach, limousine liberals.
This type of analysis is what is killing America and not just the big cities.
What is past is past and no one living there much cares how it happened, they
want to know what we can do about it. Only partisan crave to blame someone for
their own gain. The happy talk of the Governor and the City Manager make me as
nervous as the threat of bankruptcy. It would help if they could begin to
sketch the outline "what now?" The only tragedy would be if in 20 years
things were still in turmoil.
I blame the big 3 car companies to a large extent. They lost two generations of
Americans to small, foreign-made vehicles by insisting that they produce cars
that 1) deteriorated after 65,000 miles and 2) got horrible mileage and 3) were
much larger than many people wanted. They couldn't compete with foreign
car companies, closed many of their plants in the upper Midwest, including
Detroit and other cities in Michigan, and voila! No jobs = dwindling tax base
and population. Go figure.
The big 3 made cars the unions wanted them to instead of what customers would
buy. That's what liberalism is all about. It's surreal to hear the
kids these days raised on Marxist drivel proclaim that companies exist to
provide jobs rather than generate profit for investors, the literal owners and
force behind the company's existence. Employee owned companies are out
there. They can find one or start one.The crazy nonsense comments
like those on MSNBC would be hilarious if people didn't believe them. Many
people get angry when pundits say things they don't like. I can handle
that, but I never get used to the shock of overt lies and purposeful
misinformation. Those who scream about that the loudest and point at Fox News
are often the worst offenders.
Wow! Is Melissa Harris-Perry really that stupid? The dems are in control of
Detroit. Have been for 50 years, and it has failed miserably. And yet she
tries to blame the republicans. She need only look in the mirror and to her
party to see the reason for this failure.
Some believed that the Jews were responsible for Germany's economic
problems in the 1930's.
This is the future of the American republic under liberal rule. Replace
"pensioners" with "social security recipients" and you have a
foretaste of what will inevitably occur. "According to the Congressional
Budget Office’s long-term estimate, every penny of the federal budget will
go to interest on the debt and entitlement spending by 2025" That is all of 12 years away. Our debt crisis will occur long before that
happens. Keep an eye on what happens in Detroit. That's our future.
I echo the comments of others above. Dems pointing fingers at Republicans and
trying to blame them for the woes Detroit is facing is sheer lunacy. There has
been a democrat mayor in Detroit since 1962. Unions there would not negotiate,
so companies fled. Entitlement mentality eroded the pride of owning a home and
keeping a job. This was caused by the idea that others should take care of them.
Detroit spent above average on education and reaped the bottom 25% graduation
rates. A person is more likely to go to prison in Detroit than go to college. The median home value is $5,700 dollars. That is not a typo.By their fruits ye shall know them. Utah has spent the bottom 25% on education
and for non-immigrant children has very high college attendance rates. We are
one of the top 10% for bond ratings for all states. Do we have problems? Yes.
Have you looked at Detroit's problems lately? I will say is again. By their
fruits ye shall know them. Utah is the reddest state and has among the best
fiscal management for state government in the country. Those are facts that
cannot be argued.
Observe Detroit. Our country is on the same trail.Keeping
liberal Democrats in office, we make us bankrupt.Through out
history, societies have not maintained honest leaders, and were forced into
poverty, and suffering.Detroit is a re-run of the past, and a view
into our future. History bears this out.
Everything bad that happens is the Republicans' fault, even where Democrats
control every level of government for 50 years. If Republicans would only
totally leave the planet, money would grow on trees, racism and poverty would
end, rival gangs would hug it out, and every problem would be miraculously
solved by a government solution, funded by those money trees.
Detroit fell because the piggy bank was broken. There are many answers but the
piper must be paid. Doesn't matter which political party is to blame, the
story of the build-up and fall is there for all to see. Business and citizens
voted with their feet. Now the problem of determining who pays. Those
responsible for the demise want someone else to pay the damage and restore the
fifty years of good times of raiding the cookie jar. Relatives generally help
hard-luck families and friends, so Detroit looks to friendly courts and Uncle
Sam to bail it out. The problem is that Uncle is broken as well but push has not
yet come to shove. Most major cities as well as the country are technically
bankrupt, so where and how to begin? A backward look at the Bible tells how
Joseph foresaw seven years of famine, so in preparation, filled silos and barns
for seven years. Unprepared Israelites sold themselves into slavery for grain to
survive. America will awaken to its plight but its barns are filled with paper,
monopoly money that eventually will prove to be worthless. Does unexplained
disappearance of Mayans come to mind?
Chrysler operates the only factory left within the boundaries of Detroit.
Operating at full capacity the factory employees $4,800 workers producing Grand
Cherokees and Dodge Durangos. Both vehicles are Consumer Reports recommended.
Due to union concessions starting wages are $16.00 an hour. The unions should
have made concessions like this ten years ago. I do support the auto bailout.
Letting GM and Chrysler go bankrupt and be sold at a fire sale was the tea party
solution. There is a plenty of blame to go around. Citygrll You are partially
correct. It takes years to bring a new design to market. When the demand
shifted to smaller more fuel efficient cars Detroit couldn't compete.
Those days are history. I am still an American car guy, always will be.
@NeilT--no bail outs. Let them file bankruptcy, and start over.
Article quote: "Detroit, however, is dead, and unions and government killed
it. Michigan recently became a right-to-work state, but it was too late to save
a city that had become beholden to unions," IBD wrote. "As the United
Auto Workers helped destroy the auto industry in and around Detroit, it's
no accident that Mercedes-Benz decided to build its flagship SUV in a shiny new
facility in Vance, Ala. "Labor overhead was an albatross around
Detroit's neck," IBD added. "Until recently, total pay and benefits
for a full-time worker at the Big Three averaged $140,000 a year vs. $80,000 for
their foreign competitors."$140,000 a year to tighten bolt
"a" onto nut "b"?"Hello, Houston, I think we
have a problem here....."$140,000 a year doing work an 8th
grader could do?!?! Yes, we definitley found the problem and the problem was
caused by unions acting like THUGS.All I can say to our liberal
'friends' is, Mitt Romney and others of us here tried to warn you...
Dueling explanations for Detroit collapse reflect ideology--It's call
corruption.Without new leadership, this country will resemble
Detroit. Put on your seat belts.
