Doug Scovil deserves much credit for the strong BYU offenses of the past.
Let's hope Anae can take some flexibility cues from Scovil!
Great article. I think Doug brought a great deal to BYU during those years. Its
nice to see him remembered so warmly.
Doug Scovil was responsible for LaVell Edwards evolving from a defensive coach
to the college inventor of the West Coast offense. His contribution isn't
mentioned much but it should be as in a bust and plaque sitting in a prominent
position in the athletic building. Of interest the single TD loss to the Beavers
should have been changed to a BYU win withini the record books, Oregon State had
wins over a few seasons vacated because of major violations of NCAA rules, under
the mighty pumpkin, coach Dee Andrus. I was at the CSU game along with the
Wyoming game the following Saturday in Laramie. Mark went from 7 TD's the
week before to 6 INTs. The Cowboys were able to rattle Wilson in his second
start, however the Cougars did escape with a narrow win. Those were fun years
with great QB's, records and dominating victories. Thank heavens the
Cougars no longer have to make those horrible trips to old or very lacking
little stadiums and the 15,000 "crowds". You would be hard pressed to
find more wicked football weather than found at Hughes or Memorial stadiums
@lightening lad - Marc also ran for TD in that CSU game (which I also attended,
along with the WYO and OSU games). It was a magical time !
