Prosecutors will push to certify teen as an adult
What a sad story. God Speed to the family. What a horrible thing to have to
deal with in so many ways. On both sides of the coin. So it comes
down to scott free at 21 and no guarentee that he is safe to society OR life in
prison for a kid that is 15. I do not agree with either one. BUT something has
to happen as this is something that has to be taken care of. I think we need a
plan C. Prison until he is 30 some odd and then see where he is. Then monitor
him like a hawk. Again God Bless this family.
My deepest sympathies are with the family on the loss of, not two but, three
sons. You are in my prayers.
If 15 year olds are old enough to be charged as an adult; then they are old
enough to have all the rights of an adult.smoking, drinking, voting,
signing contracts, marrying, joining the military. We cannot have it both
ways, and pick and choose.
Extreme rage in a 15 year old is an almost certain sign of physical or sexual
abuse.I know that if the people Utah residents, you may not think of this,
but it is typical
I think you have to take the context of the crime into consideration in these
matters. In this case a double murder. Can 6 years of incarsaration and
therapy resolve completely this young mans problems? Or is he liable to hurt
others because we can't fix him in the alotted 6 year time period before he
is set free. Would it be better to be able to keep him locked up for as long as
we need to until such time that we know as much as possible that he won't
hurt others. I suggest we have the power to keep him locked up for as long as
need be...life if necessary...to protect others.
This is a horrible story, but how can a 15 year old boy be charged as an adult
in murder, but cannot give consent for sex? We portray 15 year olds as
"victims" in sexual assault cases with those who are older, but there
supposed to have cognitive reasoning skills in murder? I have a 15 year old
son, and even though he is a great kid, I would not call him an adult.
Bob K, is it fair to ask exactly where your "knowledge" comes from? We
need to see proof of that statement. But any way you cut it, this is
a terrible tragedy with no outer boundaries. If those are the only
two options available, perhaps the law needs to be changed to allow the
possibility that a person sentenced as a juvenile can be evaluated upon reaching
age 21 and then either released or remanded for either longer incarceration or
further psychiatric treatment.
