Our Attorney General's response to critics of his continuing in office only
exposes his misreading of the Constitutional principles underlying impeachment
in this State. His justification for staying in office is as worrisome as the
allegations made against him. If this State's Attorney General cannot
properly interpret the law, his inability to interpret the law soundly in
general on behalf of this state only raises further questions about his
competence to be allowed to remain in office.
Yeah, we get it. Richard Nixon would have said the same thing.
Is anyone surprised that attorneys for compromised, if not corrupt, AG John
Swallow say impeachment is not warranted?
Of course the attorneys are going to say this. The are paid by Swallow to
defend him. Duh!
OK, I read the letter. I wasn't impressed. What was worth
reading was the two attachments at the bottom. It was an attorney explaining
that Swallow came to him in March 2012 to discuss some trusts Swallow had and
the attorney told him under state law he didn't have to disclose them.
While I am not sure I agree with the advice, it does provide some defense to
Swallow, that he actually was trying to follow the law re: his Conflict of
Interest forms and wasn't lying. I have doubted that for 5
months. I still feel like he should have listed P Solutions. At least we have
some defense as to why he didn't.
What is good news for John Swallow is he seems to be personally speaking and
answering questions. I wish he did this several months ago, but any answers from
him at this point is helpful.
Swallow's big problem is that the only one he thinks about is himself and
his needs. He doesn't care what he's doing to the State, how much
disrepute he brings upon the office of the Attorney General, how many millions
of tax dollars get spent resolving his misconduct, or how much harm it does to
everyone else, just as long as he can drag it out and draw his salary. I
can't see any scenario in which all charges are dropped, all accusations
withdrawn, and all investigations are ended with nothing happening. He's
just determined to drag it out as long as possible regardless of the cost to the
State and the taxpayers. You can't get much more selfish than that. Even
Nixon knew when it was time to fold his hand and get out of the game. Swallow
needs to do the same.
Yes! Finally, legal minds and someone other the press and some antagonistic
bloggers come forth and speak the truth. This has been a "witch hunt"
from the get go. Guilty until proven innocent has dominated the headlines and
mandated a supposed rule of law. There are so many other pressing problems in
this country. Give this story a break and start covering some of the real
critical issues that undermine our nation. Johnson should find another
scapegoat. All he has done is try to shift the blame from himself to someone
else to avoid penalty!
I am not sure how you get to impeachment. There is no proof so far that Swallow
did anything illegal. However, it is pretty clear that Swallow does not get the
basic idea of avoiding the appearance of impropriety. He probably should resign
to avoid the black eye Utah is getting, but there does not appear to be enough
to impeach him YET.
The media reports what they find out, they are not responsible getting people in
trouble, it the individual's choice to make decision on their own. To
blame the media for our own actions is merely an excuse.
BYU Alum, Witch hunt?Wed. is the Interim Committee meetings for the
Utah Legislature. During Lunch, the Utah House GOP members have announced, it
seems, that they will spend the whole 2 hours deciding what they think about
John Swallow. If the caucus decides that they want to move forward with the
process of investigating toward a potential impeachment, The Speaker, will
likely poll the House, including the democratic members, and if 50 or more say
go, they go. I think they have 16 in favor at this time if you count the 14
democratic members. If the members don't have enough of their
answers, I believe Swallow is in danger of being investigated by the House. If
he succeeds in answering their questions at any time prior to 2pm on Wed. or at
least prior to the House Poll of members, he has a chance to avoid
impeachment.Perhaps that is why he is now answering lots of
I agree one hundred percent with the lawyers' letters. I have watched this
railroad effort unfold and my take is they are correct.
While the many allegations swirling around Swallow are still being investigated,
and whether any prove true, there is more at stake here than just the question
of criminal conduct and impeachable offenses. It seems increasingly clear that
Swallow has been consistently skating the bare edge of unethical if not illegal
conduct, all the while associating with less than wholly reputable individuals,
while wheeling and dealing to make some bucks. Whether or not he slipped up and
stepped over the illegality line is becoming increasingly less relevant for me.
Our public officials, entrusted with great power and public monies, should live
a higher standard than that of "just barely not breaking the law." I
voted for Swallow, but no longer feel he has the moral foundation needed in our
chief law enforcement officer. He has lost my trust.
One thing he does send to the world of popular opinion is that he very much a
Chicago icon and is more than a Chicago pizza. Ethics is more than just being
legal and that is where he lost trust of the public. Integrity includes more
than just the law and those types of things. He can say he
isn't a duck but he smells and even looks like a duck. He may be legally
something else but he needs to understand that even though some may support him,
even if he is proven not guilty in the court of law and the legislature may not
even do any censuring of his actions but he is not able to fulfill his office
with the full trust of the public and citizens and others that deal with the
State of Utah. For the Governor, who relies on an AG for advice, to say that
the AG would not be working for him if he had hired him needs to have someone he
can trust. The Legislature may have a form of AG functions that Shurtleff
didn't take away from them in his power grab, but need the AG periodically.
Straight path & BYU alum, I find it interesting our head lawyer is now
having to "lawyer up". I feel that the investigation should run its full
course. This debacle is deeper than John Swallow, much deeper.
I totally agree the investigation should run its full course and until then
everyone, including Governor Herbert, should keep his opinion to himself.
Witch Hunt? Even the governor said that he should be
"fired." What exactly is the "evil communist left"
trying to gain by targeting the AG? If they really wanted to hurt the GOP
wouldn't they target the governor?
The problem in Utah when it comes to Swallow is that attorneys that would
normally go after a suspected criminal are frightened to death of Swallow and
the repercussions that will come down like a freight train against them. To make
matters worse, the link between the state and the Mormon church is just like the
'good old boys' networks in other states. It boils down to what
attorney or law firm is willing to risk their future in Utah in exchange for
doing everyone that lives in the state a huge favor and make sure that if
Swallow has done something wrong,(which we ALL know he has) he is banned from
politics and he is stripped of his license to practice law for life.
Kind of self-serving, isn't it, Rod?
Democrats are gleeful each time the DM prints another Swallow article. They are
so happy that all elected Republicans can be persuaded to follow the press and
go with gulty before proven innocent. This has been and continues to be a media
driven witch hunt while Obama and his followers subvert the law, target
enemies, spy on innocent civilians and very little is written. Democrats seem to
control the media which in many ways contributed to the election of Obama. Why
is so little written about all the scandals currently being exposed like the
IRS, NSA, Justice department? We have it seems thirty rehashes of Jeremy Johnson
and other felons. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a
duck maybe it is.
