It's really quite amazing how deeply involved Swallow was in so many of
Johnson's specific business dealings ... including many of the same ones he
is under investigation for now.Swallow was involved enough that he
would unquestionably be key to the proceedings in both Nevada's civil case
and Utah's criminal case ... if he hadn't managed to get himself
elected to such a high profile office. It is unseemly and unfortunate
that Swallow's current position of power is carrying so much weight in
whether or not he's allowed to be subpoenaed.
When Johnson made his allegations against Swallow three months ago, didn't
Swallow owe it to the voters of Utah to disclose these business
relationships?John, you've been elected, and are being paid, to do
the public's business. Either come clean about everything, or step down.
The voters who elected you deserve better than this slow trickle of information.
This is amazing that this debacle has gone on for so long. It is time for the
Republican Leadership to step up and fix their mess. Maybe, this event will be
the catalyst for changing the strangle hold the ultra-conservative Republicans
have on this state. We need Open Primaries, Term Limits, a good recall law, and
ballot initiatives. The likes of Norm Bangerter, Olene Walker, and Mike Leavitt
are realizing there is a huge problem. We need to start holding these dirty
politicians accountable. We need moderate, thinking, politicians very badly in
this State. It is definitely time for some serious changes.
Wow. It is so time to resign.
Although Swallow seems to be defending his actions by claiming he did not
financially benefit from the relationship he misses a significant point.By
giving private lessons to one company he is hindering all competitors. The
field is no longer level because he becomes a special adviser to only one
business. Whether paid or not, he has created an unfair business environment.
If Swallow has an ounce of decency remaining, he needs to resign now. He is a
disgrace not only to his party but to the people of Utah.
The devil himself could run on the Republican ticket and win in Utah. I think
things need to be reassessed in the state.
Honor, is a privilege to be recognized for your reputation. On my honer means
that I guaranty it. It simply that your known to keep your word and people
respect that, you are recognized. It takes a life time to build a reputation,
but a blink of an eye to destroy it. There's a lot of rode's to get to
the mill, but ounce you get there, the miller is only interested in how good
your grain is.
Has AG Swallow hired a lobbyist to try and influence the Federal investigation
into the allegations against him? If not, why not. This is the advise he gave
Mr. Johnson. Thus it must be a legal, ethical, and effective way to try and
influence the justice system in one's favor.
ALL the earlier posts are right on. Nothing more needs to be said.
Anothing thing that bothers me is the statement that Harry Reid (or any other
polition) can be bought and sold. What has happened to integrity and honor? What
has happened to following the oath of office and serving all of the people that
have elected you? Our politions and a lot of others believe that the end
justifies the means. It does not, when you have to sacrifice your integrity and
honor you have lost everything including my trust and vote.
It is clear that Swallow should step aside - at least while the investigation
continues. What is odd, however, is that more attention is not being shown to
the underlying issue - citizens having to/being able to hire lobbyists to
influence politicians to rein in the government. It happens on both sides of
the isle and just shows the corruption that big government has spawned. Why do
you think a Senator or Congressman would take a $160K job when many could be
making alot more in the private sector. Why do they stay for years (36 for our
Senior Senator). It is about power. Gone are the days of George Washington
when politicians served their country and then went home. Power corrupts and
absolute power corrupts absolutely. It is time for the American people to
confront the corruption in government and start firing those who "remain in
power" rather than who serve their country and then go home.
Many of those who comment on this situation are equating the Republican party
with evil and the devil, etc. It isn't the Republican party that is to
blame here. It is John Swallow. He is an individual first and foremost. He is
not the personification of the Republican party. The issue here with Swallow and
other individuals who are corrupt isn't their political affliation, but it
is their own personal lack of ethics and integrity. There are just as many
corrupt Democrats in politics as there are corrupt Republicans. No political
party has the corner on that market. Yes. It is time for John Swallow to
It is clear that Johnson is a criminal. He ran a fraud and is a fraud.Swallow was opportunistic like a like of people and he rationalized his
dealings. Not a lot different than a lot of us would but he needs to step out
of public office. Just like Obama. They are both the same. Lying politicians.
We all need to be better in our dealings. We all sell
out to easily for money, fame, glory.
At the Republican Convention this month, it was definitely evident that John
Swallow was not present in the speaking assignment or booth. I don't
believe Mark Shurtleff was around either for the time in 20 years.
Shurtleff's support of his Chief Deputy to the last election was a scam
knowing what we know about Swallow and Shurtleff's knowledge of Swallows
dealings. It sort of makes me think of Eric Holder. If a person tries to
deceive others that is not telling the truth and is not integrity at its finest.
AGs are supposed to be enforcing the full law for the furtherance of the
citizens they represent, not above or getting around the law.We are
a nation based on law and a semblance of order. Handshakes meant one's
word was good. Now, you have to figure what their words mean.
Swallow and shallow are only one letter different. He would use any method as
persuasion as a politician. Maybe it is time to have the politician part of the
Attorney General be appointed by the Governor. The last two politicians,
Shurtleff and Swallow, used their persuasions in almost everything they did.
However, Eric Holder was appointed and he has allegiance to his boss and not the
law. That is a toss up. We have a State Auditor who is not an auditor but a
relative of the speaker of the house and close ties to the Legislature. People
get around the intent of the law and we elect them anyway. Politicians can
choose to be honest but are influenced by their pride and influence. Carnal and devilish is still alive even as they have on their smiles and have
thoughts and plans for what they will do for people.
He's innocent. The (R) next to his name proves it.
(R)emember, Nixon? This administration needs to remember Nixon and read his
playbook on what happens after the events that caused the fall. Hillary
Clinton's phrase about getting the call at 3 a.m. sticks in my mind. It is
not the 3 a.m. call but what happens after the 3 a.m. call. If a person
subscribes to be President, everyday is a 3 a.m. call. There is not one day
that goes by when there is not a significant event for the President to govern.
He has appointed Cabinet members and their assistants that govern their
Departments and Agencies, but the President is still the "Buck Stops
Here" man, in this case. He chooses what he wants to know? I don't
think so. He has the requirement to be the Commander-in-Chief and not just of
the military, of the whole government. He is by title the Commander-in-Chief
but that means he also subscribes to the Code of Conduct, the ethics, and Core
Values of each of those Departments. He can't choose and pick. He is the
leader, so he says, of the most powerful country in the free world. Free for
It is my feeling that people need to vote for the individual rather than a
straight Republican or Democrat ticket.Part of the problem in my
opinion is who ever wins the Republican primary in this state is almost
guaranteed the election with the exception of Mia Love.We ought to
look at each candidate carefully before deciding. It is unfortunate that we
have one of the lowest per capita voting rates in the nation.I
believe only 57% of the elgible voters exercise their franchise.Perhaps we should shoulder some of the blame also?
Even if he isn't a criminal, as he claims... is that really how low the bar
is set for his political office? That's a pretty low bar.
Republicans want this to all go away and want to now throw him under the bus.
This is a political/religious/cultural problem that the feds are investigating
and it goes way way beyond the AG office. The only reason Herbert won't
get indicted is because without a gov. lt. gov, speaker of the house etc..the
state would be incapcitated. When is church going address this problem of
rampant fraud, abuse of power and greed? Seems this is more important than the
other "problems" they are concerned with.
Leave, Swallow! Now! You have disgraced the AG's office and Utah politics
in general, if not yourself. If you truly are a public servant you owe it to the
people of Utah to step aside while this mess you have created is resolved.
I have zero tolerance for political corruption regardless of party. If they are guilty they need to go. Wish more people would be as intolerant
of corruption as they are of their supposed opposition party.Throw
the bums out until they realize we the people hold everyone accountable.Period.
Wow - the second email linked online (not discussed in the story) shows that Rod
Snow was representing Swallow way back in October 2012. Why was he (a criminal
defense attorney) representing the candidate for attorney general a month before
the election? And why didn't the voters know about that then?
Turning and turning in the widening gyreThe falcon cannot hear the
falconer;Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;Mere anarchy is
loosed upon the world,The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhereThe ceremony of innocence is drowned;...And what rough beast, its
hour come round at last,Slouches towards [Salt Lake] to be born?
(From "The Second Coming" W.B. Yeats, except the words
"Salt Lake" are substituted for Bethlehem.)
Did anyone read the article? Isn't it about a civil trial and the
dispositions allowed in a civil trial vs a criminal trial and the dispositions
allowed in a criminal trial?Of course the facts never get in the way
for those who made up their minds before any facts were presented. Just seeing
the "R" in front of Swallow's name was all the evidence that many
needed to "prove" that he was guilty. That's all the evidence that
they required to convict Nixon and Reagan and Bush, even as they told us that
Clinton was perfectly correct in asking us what "is" is and then telling
us that Obama couldn't possibly be involved in any scandals because he has
yet to set foot in the White House. We have a two
"standards" in America. One standard is impossibly high for
Republicans, and, after reading these posts, the other standard is non-existent
for Democrats. Has anybody even thought of asking Harry Reid why he
tried to get Internet Gambling approved immediately after he was re-elected, but
then the Democrats tell us that Reid can't be bought.
This mess is shameful and I feel that in what is a relatively small state
politically speaking, a lot of people knew a lot more than they are admitting.
It is time that we resurrect the old phrase of the Nixon scandal, what did the
governor, senate president, speaker of the house, fill in the blank, know and
when did they know it.This did not happen in a vacuum. People knew
and kept silent. Mr. Swallow's association with pay day lenders, who I
feel are bottom feeders socially and morally, and other fast buck artists should
have triggered several investigations by the press. I think Mr.
Swallow has rendered himself unfit for office and should resign, or be
impeached.Mr. Swallow sold out for money. Maybe he should have held
out for Wales. My apologies to Mr. Shakespeare.
@MorpunktIronic to get advice about running the state of Utah from a
Californian. One state is practically bankrupt and one has not debt. Overall our
elected leaders have established good policies for our state. Having said that,
in no way do I defend John Swallow. He has some very troubling ties to certain
companies that, even if he didn't benefit financially, make the business
playing field uneven. He should resign.
@kaysvillecougarYou don't need to tell me about my state's
problems. They are much too numerous to count. The relavancy of my comments are
more directed to a state, which is dominated by a faith, to which I also belong,
that is becoming a knee-jerk GOP voting block. I would hope the species of my
creed, so much represented by the great state of Utah, would be more circumspect
in their leadership selections. I personally believe there could be a great
contribution to the Democratic Party, for its improvement, by talented
defectors. Or, maybe that's just a pipe dream.
Don't blame me. I voted for the other guy.
I thought this story was about Swallow but here is good ole JWB off in la-la
land talking about Hillary and Obama. Hey JWB how did this go from Swallow and a
problem in Utah, to a statement that Hilary made about a 3AM phone call. Wow man
maybe you better lay of or at least cut back on the green Jello.
