Is the Lt. Governor's office qualified to decide whether or not issues are
pertinent and warrant investigation against a Utah Attorney General? Such legal
matters are more appropriate in the arena of jurisprudence such as the State
legislature or the court system who can then appoint special counsel to
investigate and recommend what matters require further investigation without the
Lt. Governor's office hiring a legal special counsel to actually make
recommendations on what issues to investigate (which did not appear to be what
happened here and of course that would have added an unnecessary delay to the
I do not know if Swallow broke the law or not. That will remain to be seen. The saddest part in this case and in much of politics is that what he
did is not CLEARLY illegal.Look at our national politics.Dodd takes a sweetheart home loan from CountrywideBoehner passes out
Tobacco checks on the house floorCongressmen legally trade on insider
informationWalmart would NEVER allow their employees to be
"influenced" like that. Why do you think that is?Look at
congressional net worth when the first get elected and compare it to when they
leave office. Their increase is astounding for people making under $200k per
year.Show me a congressman, and I will show you someone who has
crossed the ethical line.
Perhaps its imagination on my part. But the look in his wife's eye seems to
be asking, 'Are you sure you want to be doing this'?
This is Utah, not back east, to the north or the south. John Swallow can
justify his actions and say he will be exonerated, whatever that means. He is
an attorney and politician. He says words that will get him out of a situation
for himself. However, he is not talking just about himself but as our Attorney
General. He is not a private citizen up with charges that he did something in
his personal life with someone that he was dealing with. He was the Chief
Deputy or becoming the Chief Deputy for Mark Shurtleff, acting for him as his
Chief Deputy with power and authority. As a Chief Deputy he was a public
servant performing his duties with honor and integrity, supposedly in that
office. He represented himself at the convention 10 minutes after talking with
Jeremy Johnson. He defeated Sean Reyes with his position as the Chief Deputy AG
even when a lot of the Assistant AGs had problems with how he ran his staff and
office. He should cut his losses for the party and step down. The
legislature will have divergent issues even though they are almost all
Republicans. Integrity is higher than politics.
Utah has Grand Juries. This is what they are designed for and used since early
common law times.
Politicians just try to talk their way out of every problem they cause...There are plenty of good people who can serve.Next!
Having many friends who actually work for the State of Utah: some who work for
the Attorney Generals office I can say the work is getting done. John Swallow is
doing his job as our the attorneys, paralegals, secretaries: Utah is not being
shortchanged. It bothers me that Ralph Okerman can vote for gay, lesbian housing
being forced down the throat of Utah citizens but acts like mister cool when it
comes to judging John Swallow. Each legislator should look in their own closet
and realize they are not perfect before making their decision on John Swallow
without all the facts.
