Welcome to the Beehive State, where just about everyone is paid less than the
national average. Why should educators be any different?
The shocking part of this story is that over $500,000 a year is LESS THAN THE
NATIONAL AVERAGE!! What is there about being a University President that is
worth that kind of money? I'll bet there are a lot of good, competent
people who could do the job well and would do it well for a lot less money. Why
is "keeping up with the Joneses" what we should be doing? University
presidents are "public servants" on the tax payer dime. I'm all in
favor of them making a decent living, but what constitutes a "decent"
living? The average household income for that same year in Utah was $55,869
(and that's with a whole lot of households having two "incomes").
I'd say that his compensation is excessive, not "below average".
If ever there were a problem in our country with an "entitlement
mentality", I don't think the poor have a corner on that market at all.
This strikes at the core of so much that is wrong with our country. Utah
taxpayers should be appalled.
I don't think Utah has to worry very much about competing with other states
for higher education leaders. The State of Utah tends to rely heavily on home
grown leadership, especially LDS General Authorities or relatives of LDS General
Authorities. With the exception of the Presidents of the University of Utah,
Weber State University and Salt Lake Community College, all the other university
leaders are lifetime LDS residents of Utah, former General Authorities, or
children or grandchildren of current or deceased General Authorities. Benson at
Southern Utah University is former LDS President Ezra Taft Benson's
grandson, Holland at Utah Valley University is Elder Jeffrey R. Holland's
son of the LDS Church's Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Nadauld of Dixie
State University is a former LDS Church member of the Second Quorum of the
Seventy. Albrecht from Utah State is LDS and home grown as well.
This just in - half of the workers in every industry make less than the median.

The real question ought to be do they earn their money- do they fund raise well
beyond their salary- Benson certainly did at SUU- so big loss for them- so do
the others?- if I pay you 400k a year what should I expect in return- perhaps
3-4 times (much more) that much in direct fund raising that only you could have
brought into the institution- not just the normal amounts but money you directly
got for us becasue of who you are- this seems reasonable since those quoted in
the article make such a case that these people are unique and demand such high
salaries- if so then demonstrate what unique qualities you bring and show me why
the salary is justified- is so great have apay raise- if not well there is
always somewhere that will pay beyond what you deserve
One more thought from John Kenneth Galbraith- The salary of the chief executive
of a large corporation (university) is not a market award for achievement. It
is frequently in the nature of a warm personal gesture by the individual to
himself (or in this case the Board of Regents who want convince themselves that
this is all justified- they will also throw out salary compression as an excuse
yes and middle class kids are not going to be able to afford colledge period.
but that will make more cheap labour for the megacorporations as the us turns
into a third world nation.
