A point guard from our state is indeed having a stellar season. He's
scored a game winner in the playoffs and is a classy man off the court.Andre Miller - University of Utah Pac 12 Utes
@Chris BAndre Miller? Oh my bad, when I first read that I thought
you were going to say Damian Lillard and give him credit for his OUTSTANDING
@canadiancougar,Lillard is having an ouststanding season.Rookier of the year, dominating opponents as a rookie. I wish him nothing but
the best.Lillard Jimmered the rookie of the year award. And the bench is Jimmering the JimmerLOL.Enjoy Europe
Chris B, Unfortunately, regardless of the University of Utah's conference
status, when people throughout the country think college sports in the State of
Utah, they think BYU (not the U of U). The University of Utah is hardly ever on
anyone's radar outside of Utah. This is coming from someone raised on the
East Coast and has lived on the West Coast for many years. The University of
Utah is a very good, but just a state regional university. BYU is a great
private university known throughout the nation and the world.
@NorCal,HaHaHaha. So funny. You're living in 1984 still. Its
no 2013. You ask any college football fan in the country what they know about
the University of Utah and they will say 2 recent undefeated seasons, 2 recent
BCS bowls, 2 recent BCS bowl wins, 2 top recent top 5 finishes.Byu
is well known yes. WEll known as being a school of Mormons. But not
so much for play ON THE FIELD.LOL!
Chris BThis is not an article about the U or basketball! Both Ziggy
and Star are to be congratulated but please keep to the topic of the article!!!
Not really liking how the writer outs Jimmer in this. Not a good strategy. Not
sure Jimmer would appreciate it either. What's that line, if you cant say
something decent dont say it at all...
Chris B. First, Andre Miller was never in the PAC12. Second, when you
"ask any college football fan in the country what they know about the
University of Utah..." the more likely response is mid-major that played in
a BCS game (most won't remember the undefeated seasons or the individual
accomplishments). Utah was on a decidedly upward trajectory for the first
decade of the 2000s and I think most people do recognize them now as a national
program, but the name recognition still doesn't compare with BYU.As for the article, I love that it starts talking about KVN and his season.
Truth is that he exceeded expectations and was decidedly the best player on the
cougars team this season. He and Hoffman will be joining Ziggy in the NFL soon
enough. I just googled "BYU NFL prospects" and found an article from
last march called "BYU Football: The Program's 7 Best NFL
Prospects." Ziggy was not on the list. It's nice to see
BYU starting to get players in the NFL once again. Hopefully Braden, Braden,
and Brandon all have their names called today or tomorrow.
Re: NoCalInteresting. I have lived all over the country in the
recent years and I find the opposite. Naturally, inside the Wards the sports
talk is most always BYU. Outside the Wards, most people don't know where
BYU is and when Utah (the state) is connected with the school, many confuse it
with the U of U. Outside your cocoon the national band, recognition, meta is
greatly over rated.
When chirs b mentioned a guard from the u having a stellar season, I thought he
was thinking of Marshall Henderson who dumped the u and landed on his feet at
Ole Miss in the SEC. As for his assertion that when football fans
across the country talk about u football they recall "2 recent undefeated
seasons, 2 recent BCS bowls, 2 recent BCS bowl wins, 2 top recent top 5
finishes"...well, I haven't found any in NC. But, many of them do know
about Marshall Henderson.
Now that Detroit got Ziggied, maybe they'll be Krugered.
Urban Meyer is about the bggest reason anyone outside UT recognizes the U of U,
and their fortunes are on a strong downtrend unfortunately. Here's hoping
basketball has righted itself. They may live to regret having gone to the PAC.
I have lived in OH, AL and TX for 30 years and never stumbled into a
sports discussion that included mention of the U of U, except when Urban Meyer
left for Florida. Otherwise, it's a dead topic. Mention BYU and
invariably someone will bring up the string of Wilson, McMahon, Young, Detmer or
maybe Danny Ainge.Lots of good athletes coming out of Utah, wish
them all well in success at the next level.
Unfortunately, the Detroit Lions are NFL's equivalent of the Sacramento
Kings. Both have lots of talent but no one who understands the meaning of
"team sports". I hope Ziggy doesn't get lost in all the hope and
hype that swirls around the Lions.
It's funny how the arguments about brand recognition for Utah v BYU get
started. I'm just being funny when saying this but I took my family to
Disneyland recently and saw lots of USC and UCLA gear, as expected. What I
didn't expect was all the BYU gear. There was even a few Boise state caps
and shirts. I was there for a week and didn't see a single piece of Utah
gear. Just saying lol
Please give us daily Ziggy updates to go along with the hourly Jimmer updates.
Oh brother. Only in these forums.
Mark it down...Ziggy will play limited games in the NFL. He's a "pet
rock"...funny concept but no substance...Detroit football is famous for 1st
round picks that flop. This will be no exception...wearing 3-D glasses with no
lenses to the green room was just the beginning of this clown car event...watch
and see...Star! What a stud...sitting at home with mom on one side,
wife and daughter on the other...humbling hugging them both...What a
RE: Hey BabyAre you honestly trying to say that Ziggy is not a class
act? You might want to actually read a few of the now hundreds of stories
published about him. I agree that Star is a stud and I love that he stayed home
with his family. Ziggy got to see his family for the first time in five years
because they were flown to NYC. Both players have incredible stories and will
likely have great careers in the NFL.
Congrats to Ziggy. What a Great story.I have to second the comments
about people outside of Utah not talking about the U of U. When hearing I grew
up in Utah, 100% of the time a sports discussion starts off about BYU and BYU
players. People always mention BYU players who have performed well. Never has
anyone assumed I went to the U of U, asked me if I was a Ute or mentioned a
player from the U of U. who has done well.... It wouldn't hurt my
feelings if they did...Utah has had some great players and some very good
teams...For the most part, however, in the areas where I have lived, few people
know who went to the U of U and fewer have watched the U of U play in any sport
even fewer care.
You guys are all funny.
Ziggy won't get jimmered simply because of his size. If anything, it would
be more accurate to say "Don't get Araujo'd" but he
won't. He is simply too athletic and smart.
We're coming up on year 5 since Utah won the Sugar Bowl. People don't
remember who played in Non Championship games 5 and 9 years ago aside from the
fans of the team. In the last 2 years the average college fan across the country
knows BYU as the school that produced Jimmer and Ziggy becuase ESPN made darn
sure they got the coverage. We're all kidding ourselves if we think the
nation is really following either of our teams as a whole...Its only when a
unique story is presented that either the U or the Y garners any national
interest.Case in point: while reading most of the comments on the
Mock Drafts leading up to the weekend I saw countless posts where they
mistakenly had Ziggy and Star "playing in a weak conference like the
WAC." Just goes to show the casual fan nationally still doesn't see the
progress these 2 teams have made. Fans don't remember who won the title in
84 nor do they remember a 2003 fiesta bowl.
