Number of players Whittinham has RECRUITED and developed to the point of being DRAFTED?

    20

Number of players Bronco has RECRUITED and developed to the point of being DRAFTED?

    zero.

    none.

    nada

    zilch.

    not one.

I wonder if future recruits want a coach who has RECRUITED and developed 20 guys that got drafted, or zero?

Which coach is better at identifying and developint talent?

Well, is 20 or 0 better?

    I say 20.

    Well done Star!

Should help shore up a porous defense. He plays a lot like Ngata. Not a lot of flash, but is stout in the middle. With the weight loss, he should be a force in the middle for Carolina.

Congrats to Star, Ziggy and all the draftees. Wishing all of them safety and success in their careers.

Can't wait to hear what spin Chris B. puts on this one.

    @Chris B

As a recruit I'd be pretty happy having little talent and being developed into a top 5 draft. Bronco may not have RECRUITED Ziggy but he DEVELOPED him. The only selling point U have is that U have another 2 months to prepare to the draft with no postseason.

    @canadiancougar624

Is "developed" the same as "potential". I did not see one pre-draft comment about Ziggy's development; however, incredible praise for his potential, his arm span, his physical prowess. At this time Detroit drafted him on his potential and their ability to develop his play.

  • Christy B Salt Lake City, Utah
    April 25, 2013 10:44 p.m.

Sorry folks; my little sister is so completely obsessed with all things BYU, that she hardly had room in her post to mention Star, who, btw, originally signed with BYU.

  • Uteanymous Salt Lake City, Utah

    whoami

"I did not see one pre-draft comment about Ziggy's development"

Who are you kidding? Development is implied by the fact that Bronco and BYU took a kid that didn't even know how to don a pair of shoulder pads, and developed him into a starter on the 3rd ranked defense in the country.

It's laughable the frantic and emotional denials Utah fans have to put themselves through to avoid recognizing any accomplishment by their big brothers.

Do wse have to be snarky when this is a happy day for both of them and they both deserve it?
Congrats to both of you! I hope you stay safe!

    @Who Am I Sir?

He was drafted into the NFL based on his NFL potential yes, but to take someone who knows NOTHING about football and get him to be taken as a top 5 pick in the draft does take a lot of work spent developing. Bronco isn't the only one to credit as KVN probably spent just as much time with him since he was his roommate. On another note, i am surprised U have such a bad team with ALL 20 DRAFT PICKS KYLE WHITTINGHAM HAS.

Congratulations to Star and his family. The Carolinas are a beautiful place to live and Star is the perfect addition to the Utah legacy with the Panthers. I watched the draft last night and cheered enthusisatically for Ziggy. Then, when others in the room wanted to watch something else, I convinced them to toggle back and forth to watch for Star. When he was chosen, also in the first round, a whole room full of Cougars cheered just as loudly! Go Star! Go Ziggy! Great night for Utah Schools and two talented and good young men!

Chris - please move on from your poking at the southies on this story. This is a story about a great man who will be a star in the NFL (both in name and in accomplishment), let's stick to that PLEASE!! As far as you trollers are concerned, go over to the stories about Ansah and be proud of what he has accomplished. These are two great stories and should not be clouded by the feud - that can be exploited on many other fronts.

    Go Utes!! Go Star!!

    "How about on the scoreboard?"

BYU has had a better record than Utah in 5 of the 8 seasons during the Bronco/Kyle era.

THAT's what scoreboard is all about!

Utah fans like to pretend that ONE game during a 12 game season proves which team is better. According to that misguided theory, a 1-11 team would be considered better than an 11-1 team if the 1-11 team won the head-to-head. Of course, NOBODY actually believes that, although our friends on the hill like to pretend that they do when it comes to comparing BYU and Utah.

  • U 90 Corona, CA
    April 26, 2013 5:45 p.m.

SnackPack from Olympus Cove (not Salt Lake City), does that cut & past you throw out there every other day change the fact that BYU is owned by Utah in the short term and the long term in football?

Canadian Cougar, what? Your first post is about Ziggy getting drafted ahead of Star. The second post is about BYU having an honor code. So what? Just be happy for the two players instead of spewing disconnected thoughts.

Gone Fishin, you do realize this is a Utah article, not BYU, right?

  • anti BCS Anaheim, CA

    U 90

Utah has simply gotten lucky two of the last three years.

    Your turn:

Please explain why such a "stellar" football program as Utah is so inept at finishing in the Top 25?

BYU has almost as many Top 25 finishes in the last 7 years, as Utah has in their entire history.

Of course, that's what you'd expect when you're comparing a national brand, legacy program with a johnny-come-lately, flash-in-the-pan program.

  • phoenix Gilbert, AZ

"BYU is owned by Utah in the short term and the long term in football..."

Since 1972, BYU is 26-15 versus Utah, and 13 of the last 16 games have been decided by a touchdown or less in the closing minutes of the game or in overtime.

Despite your frantic and emotional spin, that's hardly "being owned" short or long term.

btw, before you break out your really long term time machine to cite your leather helmet era period of "domination", just remember, Utah did absolutely NOTHING on a national scale prior to BYU and Utah joining the WAC in 1962.

  • Elmer Fudd Sandy, Utah
    April 27, 2013 11:13 a.m.

    @ mussingaround

"BYU has had a better record than Utah in 5 of the 8 seasons during the Bronco/Kyle era"

Is that all you got? So according to BYU logic: the better team is the team with a better season record and NOT the head to head games (in which Utah owns the cougs btw)? If we go by that logic then since the beginning of college football Utah's had more better season records then the Cougs. You can't even win with your own logic. But let's make this simple and say Utah is the better team because they win on the field against the kittens down south.

THAT's what scoreboard is all about!

  • Elmer Fudd Sandy, Utah
    April 27, 2013 11:25 a.m.

    @ phoenix

"Since 1972, BYU is 26-15 versus Utah, and 13 of the last 16 games have been decided by a touchdown or less in the closing minutes of the game or in overtime"

Really? Why trace your stats back to 1972? Why not go back to 2002 or 1998 (BCS era) or back to the beginning of college football for both instate teams 1896 or 1921? Oh that's right! Because that would put BYU on the losing end of the rivalry series! I guess Utah historically OWNS BYU just like in recent years. BYU just can't seem to beat the Utes anymore. Too bad!

The "leather helmet era" records are just as legit as today's records. If you want to deny losing to Utah because it's the "leather helmet era". Then you'll have to deny all those National Championships Notre Dame, Michigan, USC, Alabama, ect have won in the "leather helmet era". Utah has OWNED the cougs then as they do today!

  • mussingaround Palo Alto, CA
    April 27, 2013 1:54 p.m.

    fudd

The series rivalry is MEANINGLESS on a national scale. As Snack PAC has already posted, BYU DWARFS Utah by every meaningful measurement on a national scale:

    National Championships
    BYU 1 > Utah 0

    Heisman Trophies
    BYU 1 > Utah 0

    AP Top 25 Finishes
    BYU 17 > Utah 5

National College Football Hall of Fame Players
    BYU 6 > Utah 0

    National Individual Awards
    BYU 15 > Utah 0

ALL of those achievements are based on season and career accomplishments.

Your leather helmet era achievements would be legitimate IF U had any on a national scale; unfortunately for U, the ONLY thing U accomplished during the leather helmet era was being slightly better than your extremely mediocre opponents.

btw, BYA lead Utah 3-2 during the 1890's, despite Utah's bogus try to even THAT series, by claiming a win during a spring scrimmage.

Yeah, Kyle has been playing full seasons of big boy football lately. You can't ever beat us head to head, but you do seem to do better against Idaho Community Dental College than we have against USC. Congrats?

    Current bowl streak
    BYU - 8
    Utah - 0

    Number of Top 25 Teams
    Bronco - 5
    Kyle - 3

BYU has NOTHING to be embarrassed about. Disappointed in a 7-turnover meltdown that gave Utah a big win, yes, but embarrassed, hardly. 13 of the last 16 BYU-Utah games have been decided by 7 points or less in the final minutes or in overtime. Despite the constant spin from the kids on the hill, that completely refutes any notion of head-to-head dominance. Better luck in winning more close ones, maybe, but dominance, not even close.

  • Rock Of The Marne Phoenix, AZ
    April 28, 2013 12:14 p.m.

Wow, I thought this was a story about Utah star Star Lotulelei (congrats to Star), not a forum for BYU fans to try to prove, despite their teams poor record against the Utes that they are somehow better. Even in BYU fan's attempt to put lipstick on a pig, Utah's dominance over BYU's football team recently and overall is irrefutable. The only thing that matters between the two teams is scoreboard of the last game (Utah) and head to head (Utah overwhelming dominance: and it's just getting worse for BYU). Also, comparing what Utah has done in the PAC-12 vs. BYU's WAC heavy schedule is as apples to oranges as it gets. And Skywalker, since you bring up selective statistics about bowl games, I'll play along; let's talk overall bowl winning percentages (you know when BYU may actually have to play a non-WACish team):

Utah 13-4 (.765 ) 2 BCS Bowl Wins *Tied for the second most consecutive bowl wins by an NCAA team
BYU 13-17-1 (.435) Losing overall record *Never sniffed a BCS bowl.

    Game, Set, Match.

  • Cougsndawgs West Point , UT

    @Skip-a-Rock
Give us all a break on your tough schedule. If U actually played Oregon and Stanford the last two years maybe, but as it stands not so much. Utah avg opponent BCS ranking 47.63, BYU 55.16 (not a big difference). BYU- 5 top 25 opponents, one which they beat, Utah- 3 top 25 opponents, none which they beat. Yes BYU had outliers like Idaho, NMSU, and Hawaii...all three of which they torched. Utah's biggest outlier beat them in 2011 and got nipped by a game saving kick off return in 2012, despite having a 1-11 record with losses to powerhouses CSU and Sacremento State. Your schedule is not as superior as U want people to think, and until U actually beat a PAC 12 team with a winning record, no one cares.
