Is it really necessary to beat a team 10-0? What about sportsmanship? It is
far better to be a gracious victor, while giving younger players a chance to get
in the game and develop their skills.
@JCS, well, in HS baseball there is a mercy rule of 10 runs. I looked at the box
score and it appears that Lehi had 5 innings to try and score. Sometimes the
other team is just better. It doesn't appear that PG tried to "run
up" the score, they just had a good day at the plate. How is that bad
sportsmanship? It's a region game, therefore important for state seeding,
so no coach I know would risk losing. It's not that uncommon for HS teams
to score 5-6 runs an inning, so you don't call off the dogs until you know
for sure. But, the mercy rule took care of that in this case. Maybe now you
could mention something about being a gracious loser?
