    Interesting and thoughtful. Yes, I've heard folks use the word "competent" wcompetentith imprecision and with no regard for consequence, and I think that is the one lesson else to draw. When we use the word "competent", there is a consequence attached.

    You are very competent journalist = praise = reward

    You're not quite competent = criticize = punishment

    He's on his way to becoming very competent = promotion

    He won't be competent = imposed barrier/limitation

    He was more competent than the other applicant.

    Success and failure often turns on small hinges as the world turns. Especially in this world of social justice where the finish line really isnt the same for all. Therefore, let the lesson be that the word competent has significant consequences in the worldwe live.
