Gary Payton just went way up in my estimation.
The glove was fun to watch and his trash talk was strategic. Great guy off the
court. The lockout year really hurt him as his co-star Shawn kemp put on
40 lbs and Gary had to wait to be traded to the Lakers to get his best shot or a
ring....oh the good ole days
Payton...always respected John Stockton...you would often hear john
stockton's name on Gary's interviews on who he thinks is the best
player he played with...one of em is John Stockton....tons of videos on
youtube...where payton is praising John Stockton...unlike Kenny the jet smith
who is sour graping and saying John was a dirty player...Payton understood why
John was like that....John plays to win...every night....and does everything he
can...to win...even setting up those nice screens...
Would be nice if Ute and Cougar fans showed as much respect and class toward one
another as Payton and Stockton. I won't be holding my
I remember Payton always said Stockton was the only player he would not trash
talk because of the respect he had. The Glove was great. He was
dominant at both ends of the floor and could even post up.
@rationalPayton and Stockton are finished playing, the rivalry is
over. That is not the case with BYU and utah, that continues.
Duckhunter, If actual rivals -- who actually played in actual games -- can be
respectful of one another, I don't understand why people who've never
been on the inside of an official jersey can't. If no one ever responded to
Chris or Naval, wouldn't they just fade away?
Wow this is cool! This is a genuine question... Are there respected
relationships like this in the game today? I really don't know. I'm
trying to picture this scenario happening in 20 years with the current group of
I Love this!! Gary Payton was always my very favorite player outside of the
Jazz. He was fun to watch and played hard. I'm happy that he will be in the
Hall of Fame.(Go Jazzboys tonight! It's not over yet!)
He just showed me he deserves to be a Hall Of Famer. Nice job "glove".
As crafty and clever as Stockton was/is I can't imagine why Jazz ownership
never brought him on as an assistant coach. Especially given the way Corbin has
coached the team we could use some options when they finally get around to
Duckhunter you are spot on in your assessment. Ute fans spew their hate and then
expect byu fan to act differently. Hypocrisy at its finest. I am glad you get
them upset. If they act just as max hall described they deserve anything that is
said by byu fans and then some. After seeing the posters their fans bring to
games, it would be impossoble to say something to ute fans they dont deserve
Keep doing what you do duck!As for Payton, congratulations. And I
always will love Stockton.
@CJ.... I don't think Stockton wants to coach. One of the things that
makes him great in my eyes is that he was able to walk away on his terms,
embracing the opportunity to spend time with family and out of the spotlight are
two examples of why he was/is respected.Props to Gary Payton, I
remember watching him play against the Jazz as a Sonic. He was one of that
group of players Stockton, Malone, Robinson, Jordan, Barkley, Bird, Magic,
Pippen etc. that made that era special.
Ducky & Holiday - Wow. So sad.
@HolidayLet's forget the hate speech that Max Hall expressed
years ago. What was left out of this by the media (because of the strong words
of hate) was an investigation into the claims Max made about his family and how
they were treated by Utah fans around them. The rant and claims here were
exaggerated. Nobody poured beer on Max's family. It's not
like only Utah fans are out of line. I have been to many BYU games over the last
30 years and seen outrageous stuff down in Provo as well as at Rice Eccles.
It's the disgusting part of the rivalry that the media loves to fuel. Yes some Utah fans do hate BYU (unfortunately). And some BYU fans see
Ute fans as lesser citizens and then expect them to have respect for the Lords
and Vassels of the valley and beyond. But what do we know? "We won't
put down our weapons"
