"There's some concern of liberty, of the government being too much of
'nanny state,' you know, on making us do things," What
about the liberty and rights of a defenseless child?
So the Governor of Utah supports Child Abuse. What else do you call poisoning
kids who have NO CHOICE in the matter?Utah Family Values sure are showing
If we are not banning smoking in Utah, we shouldn't ban smoking in
someone's home or car. It isn't good for anyone to smoke anyway. Veto
the bill. SB 271 should not be vetoed. The Schools are already not
complying with the current law and SB 271 makes it easier for them to all not
get poor grades. Because of that the state school board which ignored the law
and created their own system doesn't want SB 271 vetoed.
So Governor Herbert doesn't want to tell drivers that they can't smoke
with little kids in the car, but "Nanny" Herbert is okay with telling
hunters who can legally carry a loaded firearm openly that they can't
unload it and put a coat on.Sorry Guv. What you really ought to be
concerned about are your mixed messages.
Please sign the bill, Governor Herbert, for the safety of defenseless children.
Save your veto any bill that gives Utah water to Southern Nevada.
About 125 new bills passed thru the Legislature this year. The ones the Governor
signs will become law. I, for one, don't have a clue what most of them
are...just the ones that the media raises questions about. It does appear that
number over a period of time would be overkill. It would be interesting to know
exactly the number of laws that are in the Utah Code now and if some of the
bills suggested by the Legislature are unnecessary
Smoking in front of a child period is child abuse. It is a toxic odor. It
should not just be banned in cars. Do some research on second hand smoke.
Don't even get me started on pregnant women who smoke.
Even as a non-smoker, this is a dumb law. Who is going to enforce it? Those
who smoke in cars also smoke in their home. Will home smoking be the next
target? We already have 'Lunch Nazis' at the schools assuring that
students don't buy junk food at school so they go to the local store and
buy it anyway. Perhaps the Government should begin restricting food intake for
fat people and force-feed those who are too thin. This is another step in the
wrong direction as the Government continues to try to control our lives.
Just open the window! They cant prove harm to anyone via second hand
smoke much less children!
While I agree with the intent of this law, I can't help but grin at the
irony of passing something like this, while at the same time failing to pass a
law making texting and using cell phones illegal for anyone -- adult or teen.
While refusing to pass something like that because it might intrude on private
rights, this one is somehow okay.Well, I guess that makes sense
somehow -- but only in Utah.
The label of this article should have been on the education part more than on
smoking. Kids without education will be smoking but kids with real education in
a public school system is what we need.Schools needs standards and
they already have that in a bill that was passed in 2011 and which the President
of the Utah Senate had been deeply involved with the process over the past 2
years. This was a PCE push sitting next to the sponsor of this ill bill. The
Governor is correct that there is a viable system in place. This was passed in
the last day of the Legislature and pushed through the process while the Lt.
Governor and Attorney General's bill that they couldn't investigate
themselves was the highlight.
I just wanted to say that we have had a smoking by-law in place for awhile now
and it is working. No one is allowed to smoke in cars with children present.
Common sense has gone so far out the window that now in Canada and the United
States laws must be passed for people to do the right thing!!! How sad that we
cannot govern ourselves better!!
More government intrusion into people's lives. Isn't this fun.
I can not believe the heartless comments found on this board. We are talking
about the rights and liberty of children. CHILDREN!!Yes, I wish
that we didn't need laws like this passed and that everyone just
didn't subject children to harmful things like second hand smoke on their
own. Sadly, mankind has shown time and time gain life isn't that perfect
and we need laws like this to save lives.
Children cannot advocate for themselves. Someone else needs to do it, even if it
is not a family member. Remember! Children are the future of our country.
If we cannot protect them when they are young, who is going to protect us when
we are old?
