Let's see. Two years ago Herbert SIGNED HB477, a BAD (anti GRAMA) bill,
"Because it passed with a veto proof majority." It would be
hypocritical of him to veto this Constitutional Carry bill that also passed with
a veto proof majority.
"amended so a gun concealed without a permit could not have a round in the
chamber, which is considered unloaded under Utah law. "Let me
see if I understand the logic. To get a CCP in Utah, one must pass a
background check and go thru a 4 hour class. But, if you want to avoid all that
mess, just don't put a bullet in the chamber."According to
the study (BYU Study), 82% of Utahns favor background checks on all potential
gun buyers. But, that number is still almost ten points lower than the national
totals."Heck, I didn't think you could get 82% of people to
agree on ANYTHING.So tell me. Who is the Utah State Legislation
The class for a concealed carry permit that everyone seems so concerned about,
deals with the same basic safety that one gets in the Hunter Safety Course.
I'm 55 and had that course 41 years ago. That puts a large number of people
in the same situation as me. This is an area known for hunting, shooting and
other outdoor sports. Yet, I haven't seen many injuries or deaths related
to mis-handling firearms, other than some unfortunate fires caused by the normal
functioning of the same. That issue has been addressed. As to the
"background check," it's not done for those who carry open. So for
carrying concealed it seems meant to imply those people are likely unbalanced,
when the really unbalanced ones would hide their weapons regardless of the law.
The current law just collects a fee and rubber stamps a paper saying you're
not Charles Manson. In all, there's no compelling reason to veto this bill.
Wonder why the DN didn't mention the huge numbers of calls and letters the
governors office is receiving asking him to sign the bill into place. Contrary
to what those opposed to Constitutional carry would have you believe, the vote
of the legislature does represent that the majority of Utah want... this bill
MoabMomCare to prove your point? I can say the contrary and be just
A few things that the governor knows:1) This bill passed with a veto
proof majority.2) The percentage of republicans in this state is
much higher then the percentage of democrats, and not all democrats are
opposed.3) When FORMER senator Bennett decided that his wisdom
preempted the wisdom of the people he was ejected from his office.4)
Covert pressure from local religious leaders to do things a certain way
doesn't prevent consequences like 3).If the Governor enjoys his
job, and wishes to keep it, he will sign that bill and then let the furor die
down. If he wants to make points with some unseen voices he will veto the bill
and then will lose his position as Governor.
