Excellent idea! Way too many athletes have been getting away with recreational
drug use over the years. Most do it because it's fun and they don't
understand the long term harm it will have on them or their families. Many think
"Hey, Oxycontin is a prescription drug, it's ok" ALL Utah school
districts should be doing this. Penalty would be removal from team and then
mandatory re-hab or counseling. Sounds shocking but they'll thank you later
Random drug testing should be mandatory for all school districts in the state.
Do what is right and test ALL Students. It seems like a witch hunt to only pick
certain groups. Test all or test none.
Why not all of the students? In my experience it was the "parking lot"
crowd that was doing drugs, not the athletes or SBOs. They actually have a life
and are trying to get into college by doing homework and being involved in
school activities. They should drug test all students.
I agree that if you implement this, that it should include all students. A few
years back, my old high school (not Park City) had some issues on one of their
spring sports teams and although the kids, parents and coaches knew that some of
the players were doing drugs, the administration said that unless the kids
themselves admitted it, or they had video evidence, they couldn't just take
the word of another player because that looked like they were trying to get rid
of a couple of starters so they could get some innings. This would be a great
step in the right direction, but maybe instead of random tests, they should just
test the whole team. Make it a condition of the tryout, if you want to play,
you'll do the test.
I'm with Obama10, clarkharris, oatmeal, manny AND ALL OTHERS WHO AGREE for
testing all students!
Obama 10- I wished it were still that way. Actually, I don't, I wished that
none of these kids did illegal drugs. However, it does happen and yes, ALL
groups, or cliques do it. It's as common to hear about athletes as it is
"parking lot kids" doing dumb things. Having been around my kids (who
were no way near perfect) as athletes and knowing their friends/teammates, I
know that a lot of kids have issues with this.
Random testing??? Ok, so is the Davis District going to get permission from the
parents? Are they going to assume parents are all going to approve of
pulling their kids out for a test for drugs of any other substance. I
think we need to randomly give the Davis School District administrators a random
I am a coach in the Ogden School District. All athletes are tested, and yes they
need a paper signed by guardian.
Read the title of this article and I thought they were talking about drug
testing the faculty which would be a more appropriate course since more teachers
would be on drugs impairing their skills and leadership abilities. If a teacher
can do drugs, even prescriptions, then they cannot and should not target the
students. It's doubtful that the school can force students to
take drug tests without parental consent and being minors. Schools must not be
allowed to perform medical procedures of any kind on students. Parents of
athletes/student body should be required to have any of the listed target group
tested by their personal family doctors and not left for the schools to maintain
a medical record on any of the students.Education is becoming too
big and to oppressive and aggressive in how they are treating and tracking and
over stepping their authority of activities of non education, stepping on
parental rights. Education is not a branch of government with any right to
impose laws and restrictions on students, this is why the students are going
postal and attacking their peers and oppressive education system.
Random drug testing? Right! What do you do? All children have a
right to an education, and we'll spend more on programs to help those on
drugs. Except for some harsh words, there won't be any punishment.Oh, the ways we find to spend money.
Great. Another reason to jack up our property tax bills.
