I agree it's "special rights". Now lets pass anti-discrimination
right for employment for those who are over 40. Let's also make it so that
persons under 30 with less then 10 years manager experience from interviewing
the people over 40. These kids are just looking for people who will become their
friend both in and out of the work enviroment.
Sego Lilly,There already is a non-discrimination law about those
over 40. You are way behind the times. Age discrimination has been the law for
years. Why do you believe that it is "special rights?" Could
you give us some reasons? Examples? You do realize that it covers
heterosexuals too, don't you? Any gay company owner or landlord cannot
discriminate against those who are not gay also. Please let me
understand your reasoning...
This is a good start for both the Republicans and Democrats to get a law,
eventually, that will be fair and equitable. It is a shame for people to put
all one category of humans into one box. There is no one common reason or
rationale for how people behave and act. If that was true, we would not need
psychologists, psychiatrists, medical doctors, therapists, religious people and
God to help us through our lives.I heard the lady from the Eagle
Forum put these people into one category. I don't believe she is a
believer that we should be a kinder and gentler society. That doesn't mean
we give up our principles and teachings, it just means we need to show kindness
to all people. There are people that take advantage of our
governmental rules and regulations. However, that is why we have an ever
changing leadership and members of all forms of government in the United States.
People need to be treated like God wants us to treat all people.
We have a gift within all of us to love our children. It is hard for some to
love all people as their own. God does.
Mero: "It penalizes everyone. This isn't a gay rights (bill). It is a
special rights bill."SegoLilly: "I agree it's 'special
rights'."I get so tired of the "special rights"
trope. It is completely bogus. The city ordinances and the proposed state law
prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. These
are characteristics that everyone has. The laws do not afford GLBT people any
special protections that straight and cisgendered people do not also share. A
law saying an employer must hire or can't fire homosexuals would be wrong.
A law saying employers cannot use sexual orientation as a criterion for hiring
or firing is fine. It is fair and equitable and does not favor any one class of
people over another.I understand why people think the laws create
"special rights." That is because of the tremendous assymmetry in
employment and housing discrimination with respect to sexual orientation and
gender identity. The vast majority of discrimination is directed against GLBT
people, so they stand to benefit more from the nondiscrimination laws. However,
all the laws do is bring them up to the same level as the rest of society.
Oh, Gayle,.....how sad.
While it may be immoral is shouldn't be illegal. The rights of personal
property are some of the oldest recognized rights under the Constitution. While
I personally would not deny someone the use of my property for being GLBT if
they fit the other requirements, the law should not force me to do something
with my property I don't want to do. The same goes for business. Put up
your money and do what you want. Yes, I also believe the 1965 Civil Rights act
is unconstitutional, too. I have never discriminated against anyone of another
race because it is immoral and unjust, however, forcing people to do so through
the law is also immoral and unjust.
JWBKaysville, UTI heard the lady from the Eagle Forum put
these people into one category.=========== yeeuuhh...Everytime I heard the words "Eagle Forum", I can't help but
think of the 3rd Reich symbol of the Bundesadler "Federal Eagle", or
Reichsadler "Imperial Eagle" grasping a wreath of oak leaves containing
I have a couple of question:If I have a basement apartment in my
home will I be forced to rent to a gay couple who responds to my classified ad
even if I believe that homosexual sex is sinful conduct that I don't want
to condone in any way? If I decide not to rent my basement
apartment because I don't want my family or myself exposed to openly gay
behavior will I be subjected to a lawsuit?
For those of us that lived in Germany and have been to the POW camps, that is
part of the cleansing that Hitler. In the 1970s it was hard to find where those
old camps were. The smell was not the best and the flower bouquets were all
around. It was not just the Jewish people that were extricated to those
facilities by train at night. Our country has been and still is
known as a haven for good people. Unfortunately, there are people that want to
make our country change it's freedoms for people in the guise of doing the
right thing for some, not all.Jesus didn't say love those you
think may be good. It may be hard. He did say to love everyone, treat them
kind and with a caring attitude. An errant child would not get very far in life
if we shunned them because it made us look bad. We have to do the right thing
and not be a Pharisee of old living today. Principles should be upheld along
with the correct teachings from our parents and teachers a leaders. This world gives an opportunity to make choices, right and not.
@MCNo. The bill does not apply to small businesses with less than
15 employees, property owners with 4 or fewer rental units, student housing
units, or religious entities and their businesses.
This is amazing. I know it isn't law yet, but I also know this took a lot
of courage to back such a bill. I'm glad to see it.
