Even after a quarter of a century while on the Salt Lake School Board where I
helped push for a voluntary pre-school program at Lowell Elementary School (now
the Open Classroom) in Salt Lake City, today state Republicans continue to fear
the public school system as perhaps a socialist program to corrupt young minds.
I continue to believe that local control of our public schools through community
councils can ensure that no socialist agenda will be thrust upon on children.
However, by today's conservative Republican resistance for more education
for these students, they condemn many children who for no fault of their own who
are most in need of community support to lives of despair, continued poverty as
their richer school mates get to prosper and develop. The global competition
with millions of children overseas receiving superior education threatens to
transform our great country into a second class nation. And the students who
could have benefited the most from this important pre-school initiative will
only fall further and further behind into a third-world class future. Such
conservative thinking is so much elitism at its worst.
Goodness sakes, you sure don't want those kids from poverty to grow up to
be well educated adults. If they do, they might actually THINK before
voting and the GOP would lose out in Utah big time.
