Hopefully this tourney will catch on. It's a great idea that will put to
rest who really is the best at each weight.
I sure hope it catches on too. I'm pretty disappointed that Box Elder and
Pleasant Grove didn't have many wrestlers there. I don't know their
reasons, but I have a hard time seeing how you can stand to back down from a
competition like this when you're some of the best in the state.
I have always believed major changes should be planned a year in advance. The
change in 5A to move from region tournaments (my personal favorite even due to
its natural rivalries) and the addition of the Super State, which I like very
much, were announced as official only last Fall. Many people have lives outside
of wrestling, even some of the very best in the sport, and make plans for after
the season is over. The end of the wrestling season has always been after the
state division tournaments were completed. I know of several great wrestlers who
were involved in other school and family commitments that took place this
weekend. I believe in coming years the Super State will catch on and it will
grow and become an outstanding event.
