For anyone watching the game, we saw the same thing happen in the 2nd half, no heart to finish. Great game but the Cougars did not have the heart to win in the 2nd half. Our key scorers are not showing up in the clutch. I do not know what Coach Rose does at this point. We need to take care of the ball better and don't start the offense so high. Just an observation.

    REBOUNDING!

Against a good rebounding team, you are not going to win with Davies and 4 guards for most of the game. When we are getting killed on the boards, why does our best rebounder (Sharp) ride the bench for all but a few minutes?

I'm a Carlino fan, but tonight he was truly awful. Really killed us.
Davies played up to his potential tonight. Good all around game, but he was the only one.

Sloppy game, but it was full of passion. I thought BYU was going to pull it out, but Carlino choked late. That guy can play you in or out of the game. Unfortunately for BYU, tonight it was the latter.

    Good luck against Gonzaga.

I only saw two plays near the end of of the game, both critical possessions: some kind of offensive foul was called on BU and Hawes attempted a drive for a two point basket when they needed three points to tie.

Not to worry: as close as they have played St. Mary's, the best thing for the Cougs is to get matched up against then one more time. No way St. Marys wins three times this year!

BYU's arrogance coming into the WCC has been met with reality and the chance for BYU to respond as men with humility. They have not.

So many thoughts and only 200 words...

Don't like to talk about Officiating but the officiating of BYU games (the only WCC games I watch)seems to hit new lows with each new game... It was horrible tonight.

Davies had a good game, I think one of the best of the season... He needs some help though and the rest of the BYU line-up looked like they didn't have the confidence to walk and chew gum simultaniously... Haws, Zilstra and Carlino need to help Davies out with some of the scoring load and they were absent tonight. Carlino has been absent for about the last 5 games.

I have been a Carlino fan up till now, but tonight he showed me why he was riding UCLA pine... A good team needs to be able to count on court leadership from the Point Guard position... A good team needs good ball handling from that position, and a good team definitely needs a PG that can hit crucial free throws at crucial times in the game... Carlino's line tonight... 35 minutes, 1-5 from the field, 0-3 from 3pt range, 2 Assists, 5 TOs, and 0 steals... Horrible.

Seems we panicked in the second half and got away from the coach's plan and played individual ball. Try a drive, throw up an ill-advised shot, lean into the defensive player while trying to shoot to draw a foul and not get either! While St. Mary's played patiently and got good shots most of each possession.

Seems we could take a lesson from the greatest player of all time---Michael Jordan--- and do the fade away jump shot. It's not blocked and money in the bank if perfected. Then quit driving wildly towards the basket without anywhere to go---that's not productive.

Better luck against the zags!! But you got to play as a team.

One of the best games the Y has played. They didn't take many shots that kill their momentum though there were still too many of them. I agree with comments about Carlino. He just doesn't understand how to be a good point guard. He tries and often does good things but he just lacks a point guard mentality. The Y are a weak rebounding team. Overall I though this game was one of their better games. They just don't know how to finish.

Plenty of talent to win this game, but once again we couldn't execute and get it done. Davies is the only one who played to his potential.

Haws has to learn how to score when he's double teamed or heavily guarded. He's going to get pressure the next two years.

Carlino was playing well in WCC games until he got player of the week. This was one of his worst games of the year. Way too many forced passes, turnovers, and poor shots.

Props to Brandon Davies who played fantastic.

I am confused at the lack of offensive design. Your point guard can't pass or shoot. We're playing 4 guards who had how many turnovers? We really struggle at creating good shots.

It doesn't seem like the offense wants to set up Haws in good spots. If they'd concentrate more on setting up Davies/Haws and run the offense through them we'd be better off. When Haws has to create a shot he struggles, when they get him the ball in good flow he's solid.

I know Carlino is only a sophomore, but I don't see it. His number one job should be to get the ball to guys in places they can score. Carlino should study Dellavadova, someone who can actually run a team.

How many times did St. Mary's get near the end of the shot clock only to sink an open shot or, worse yet, miss an open shot and then score off an offensive rebound? It seems like when the Cougar defense got to about 5 seconds on the shot clock, they figured their job was done.

I'd like to blame the horrific officiating for the loss but the officials didn't make Carlino brick 2 consecutive free throws that would have tied the game in the final minute. That's the last time I stay up until 11:30 to watch another poor effort from the Cougs. Next time I'll record it and check the results before I give up the sleep. I hope the Zags don't embarrass them too bad next week.

The problem? Carlino. The other problem? We don't have a better point guard than Carlino. I've been critical of him from the beginning. He has the physical skills...but mentally he just doesn't. Time for him to transfer to Kansas to be with another young athlete with similar issues.

I was at the pavilion last night. My thoughts:
1-Physical game and BYU came out ready to play. I think they were worn down in the 2nd half
2-Brandon Davies could score at will. They should have gotten the ball more. SMC could not stop him, although the refs let some awful fouls go with no whistle.
3- Cusik fouling out really hurt - Carlino did not have a great game
4- BYU's zone was awesome. Many near shot clock violations. BYU blew it by not getting rebounds on last 2nd shots.
5- Kufasi is a big dude and could move people around in the middle. Too bad he almost travels (or does) every time he touches the ball (although no calls). I would have liked to see him go strong to the hoop just to draw some fouls.
Very good game for both teams.

Out played, out hustled, could not match St. Mary's physical play, out rebounded, and (sorry to say) out coached.

This team is so soft it is embarassing. They just don't have the horses this year and Rose seems like he can do nothing about it.

And what's with playing Cusick all those minutes? I mean, I know he hit the game winning shot the game before, but he was 1-6 in that game and about the same in this game. Are we falling in love with Cusick, a.k.a., Riley Nelson?

If you can't hit clutch shots and stop the other team from doing so, you will lose a lot of games.

Like a wise coach once said in a post-loss interview, "Basically we failed to score more points than our opponent and stop them from scoring more than us."

I don't think people realized what an amazing passer Jimmer was until he played in the NBA and was required to do so, Sadly, he is stuck with selfish thugs who Don't reciprocate.
Last night was the best I've ever seen Davies! When he is unselfish, he is a phenomenal passer. Makes everybody better, And makes his own life much easier getting his shots. When Davies and Hawes force their shots, it is been a disaster.

"Out played, out hustled, could not match St. Mary's physical play, out rebounded, and (sorry to say) out coached."

Sorry, I totally disagree with your assessment.

The game was very evenly matched and both teams hustled and played physically from the opening tip to the final buzzer.

BYU lost this one from the foul line and on the offensive glass.

BYU out shot Saint Mary's in FG% and 3pt%, but got beat 85% to 63% from the stripe.

It was just one of those games.

In Saint Mary's last three games, the Gaels had hit 25 of 45 (45%) free throws. Against BYU, they made 22 of 26 (85%).

For BYU, a complete reversal from the game with Utah State earlier this week where BYU was out shot in FG% and 3pt%, but out shot the Aggies 85% to 63% FTs.

Playing a smaller lineup, BYU also got killed on the offensive glass.

I agree. Davies made some great passes last night. When he is patient, unselfish, and let's the game come to him, he plays really well. This was his best game.
I think this game and most of the season underscores the HUGE hole Hartsock left on this team. He provided defense, rebounding, and most importantly, consistent offensive production--all areas this team has come up short this year.
I also agree that although Carlino has the tools, he is somewhat of a head case. Dellavadova really is a great example of what a point guard should be.

Hey, PrezJohnnoOrthoman, so now Jimmer is playing with "selfish thugs"? Seriously?

His teammates are actually very accomplished, elite athletes who are among the best in the world at what they do. They are not part of a grand (non-existent) conspiracy to make Jimmer fail in the NBA.

Thinly veiled code words tell us all we need to know about those who use them.

I'm not saying it's fact, but I wonder if this might not be Rose's best coaching performance. Cusick is a "walk on" and (I think) Zylstra was too, originally. Carlino is not a true PG. A freshman football player getting a lot of minutes. Outside of Haws and Davies, injuries have forced Rose to play a lot of young, JC type players. I believe Collingsworth and Rogers would have made enough of a difference in at least half of our losses.

    @BleedCrimson, GO_COUGARS

Interestingly enough, I don't think I've seen one BYU fan comment on how officiating lost us this game. I would agree with what others have said. The horrible play from Carlino and getting killed on the offensive glass were what lost us the game.

However, I will indulge U both a little bit. The officiating was terrible. It's been terrible in the WCC. Last year, BYU shot a combined 40 more FT's than Portland in the two games they played. That should NEVER happen.

Brief statistical analysis: In the four games that SMC and BYU have played since the Cougs joined the WCC, BYU has lost to the Gaels by a combined 38 points. Interestingly enough, in those 4 games SMC has attempted 104 FT's to BYU's 69 (a difference of 35 attempts) and made 81 FT's compared to 44 FT's for BYU (a difference of 37 points, curiously close to the total point difference between the two teams).

I am of the opinion that a well-officiated game is one where both teams attempt a nearly identical number of FT's, since it's very rare that one team is fouling more than another.

  • truecoug1 Provo, UT
    Feb. 22, 2013 1:40 p.m.

    continued

Having said all of that, BYU didn't lose because of officiating last night. But the officials certainly didn't help BYU at all, especially the three over-the-back no calls that resulted in extra possessions for SMC, the two fouls on Davies down in the post late in the second half, or the mug job Dellavadova did on Haws during the final minute.

Interesting to note (as Greg Wrubell observed) that Dellavadova played all 40 minutes last night...and didn't garner a single foul.

In conclusion, the game was lost last night because Carlino went AWOL and we got killed on the glass (over-the-backs notwithstanding).

But let's be honest, this game was lost when Mike Reed was chosen to be the head official. That guy seems to have it out for BYU...wait a sec. Oh my gosh, maybe he's Chris B.!

    :)

In all seriousness, we already knew that BYU wasn't NCAA tourney quality this year with the way they've been playing. However, it's a testament to the incredible coaching job that Dave Rose has done that a 20 win season and an NIT berth leaves us all 'disappointed'.

  • PrezJohnnoOrthoman Puyallup , WA

I think Tyler is logging in too many minutes. He plays so hard on D, and typically has the opponents best defender on him. Until perimeter players make shots, they will smother Hawes. The reason they are winning 1st halves, and losing down the stretch?
1st half, they have terrific focus and energy.. 2nd they run out of gas, mentally...turnovers, physically...boards and second chance points.
Rose depended too much on Freddette, and now too much on Hawes. Need Five to survive.

I stayed up until 12:30 to see the end and as Yogi said it was déjà vue all over again. I think what appears to be a mostly Utah recruited team is not skilled enough and athletic enough. SMU is not a great team and the Cougs have lost to every decent team this year. Losing a couple games happens to every team but no one looks capable to put up half of Davies numbers next year and if Rosé had a point guard he would be playing him this year.

Carlino was totally worthless in this game he needs to stop trying to to be the next Jimmer and pass the ball to open men these stupid 40' shots that he seems to love taking are ridiculous, he needs to be more of a team player, next time he takes a 40' shot like that and misses coach Rose needs to sit him on the bench until he learns to pass the ball,i blame this loss on his act of selfish play in this game, missing 2 free throws in a row is unacceptable he is a better foul shooter than that.

Coach Rose, a former guard, plays 4 guards and Davies... Y doesn't have success recruiting big guys who can play strong in the Post & rebound, .. Carlino seems to be too hurried, too hyper, who coaches that? I think he is a better 2 guard, but then who plays point? Since before Jimmer we haven't had a true point guard.. Looks like Rose doesn't have the luxury of playing guys where they fit best...against SM players did not make plays, too many empty possessions. These guys need a mindset to play great, 40 min a game.

BYU just doesn't have the ability (yet) to win these kind of games. It'd be great if they could figure out how to beat the Gaels in the WCC tourney and have a one game playoff to get into the Big Dance. That's the only way their making the dance.
