Tell your visiting teachers you only have xx minutes available, so you'd
like them to give the message FIRST and discuss it, then if there is time left
over, small talk. Then set a timer for the amount of time available.
You're using tools to keep things focused and it may just help your
visiting teachers learn the value of bringing you the most thing of all---a
message about the gospel of Christ.
Tell the RS president you want different VTs. Problem solved!
Asking for new visiting teachers does NOT solve the problem. It merely
transfers it to another victim. How about simply saying "Sisters I like
boys, but I don't like talking about them all the time. And I have no
interest in talking about my relationships. But I have a lot of other interests
as well. So after we talk about the lesson, let's talk briefly about
__________, Then I'm sure that, like me, you've got to get back to
your ____________."When young LDS young women do talk about
young men, they would do well to focus not on what kind of date the young man
is, but on what kind of example of gospel living he presents. When a
visiting teacher visits, she should concentrate on talking about what the Lord
wants covered and then on what the sister being visited wants to talk about -
not on what she, herself wants to cover.
I've always thought that a half hour is plenty for time with visiting
teachers. They can provide a message, and have time enough to chat. I've
had visiting teachers come and stay over 2 hours...I had to finally make myself
unavailable for their visit. The message, time and spirit should be what is most
important - not just gabbing.
Most of us know how that goes, try to study about the purpose of that visit and
put yourself in no position to accept a waste of time. Cut them short, and never
advice them. They should be there to be a friend and standby in case
of need.If you have no needs, they can go and use there time more wisely
else where. If you have time for them, ask them to teach you about
the purpose of visiting teachings. You going to have a lot of fun that way.
