"Sin" taxes are fine with me, and all of them should be included in the
plan. However, I doubt we could ever get two people to agree what should be
taxes and what shouldn't!
This is an inevitable consequence of state-run healthcare. When premiums are
increased to the ultimate possible level, they will start to try to figure out
how to cut costs.BTW- I asked my health insurance company once why
premiums weren't higher for smokers and they said that there was negligible
differences in the amount of claims for smokers vs. non-smokers.Smokers and the obese first; then folks who don't take care of their
diabetes, folks who opt for risky pregnancies, etc. All costs will be put under
Utah Republicans should be cheering over this. They have been trying
to "Force" people to stop smoking for decades. And he's
President Obama - a former smoker himself - who finally gets it done. But - somehow, I think we'll see them trash talk him for Political Party
Points over agreeing this was the right think to do for our country.Even
when it was their idea in the 1st place.
"Lds lib."3 days after Obama took office he signed a smoke
tax of $1.00 per pack into law.He did it to fund SCHIP.How was it only Republicans? To the best of my recollection the
urge to compel smokers to quit has come from BOTH parties.Sorry,
everything you don't like can't be blamed on the Republican party.
Insurance companies should have a right to reduce premiums for people who
don't smoke. They could also reduce premiums for people who are not obese,
who are not sexually promiscuous, who don't drink, who have a good driving
record, who don't use drugs. This just makes sense. Those that don't
have risky behaviors shouldn't have to subsidize those that participate in
risky behaviors. It would also be a motivation for people to live a healthier
lifestyle. It's a win/win.
Using the incorrect title "Obamacare" is a continuing effort to derail
and delegitimize the Affordable Care Act. The desired effect is to have those
who oppose Obama to also oppose the ACA. You'd think journalists would
realize that by now - and their editors too.
To "LDS Liberal" how is a tax on tobacco any different than a tax on
gasoline? The tax is there for 2 purposes. To discourage its use and
to fund specific government programs.
What gets me is that nobody seems to have noticed the obvious axe that Mr.
callahan has to grind, which seems clearly to be the catalyst for his myopic
opinion on "the obese". It's quite simple: he's simply mad
that he was adversely impacted ("shamed", as he put it) for his smoking
habit and therefore wants to spread his misery around so he isn't alone.
Misery loves company, after all.I call it a myopic viewpoint because
that is just what it is: acting as if all fat people are fat because of
overeating. Well, while it may be true for a lot of them, it certainly
isn't true for all of them - or even necessarily the majority of them.
I'm fat, and make no bones about or try to deny it. However, it largely
(pun intended) is due to my disability, causing limited mobility and therefore
limited excercise opportunity. I make every effort to eat healthy, and even work
with a personal trainer twice a week (at my own expense) engaging in the few
excercises I am able to perform. In other words, don't lump all
fat folk under the "gluttonous overeater" umbrella.
Utah Bill: If "Obamacare" is the incorrect title, why does Obama refer
to it as "Obamacare?" Whatever you call it, it is just one more way for
big brother government to mess with our personal lives.
Thank You "dferg" for bringing up the fact that NOT ALL people who are
Overweight/Obese are that way because they CHOOSE to be, or because they
OVEREAT!!! When I was in my VERY Late Teen Years through my Early-Mid Twenties,
I was on a MYRIAD of Medications, most of which made me put on a SIGNIFICANT
amount of weight. I went from weighing roughly 110 pounds, to weighing OVER 220
pounds in a matter of about 5 years.I am ALSO disabled, and am
CURRENTLY Wheelchair-Bound. I can NOT exercise my lower body, because I
can't put weight on my legs (aside from OTHER problems, BOTH of my legs are
broken and require EXTENSIVE Surgery to fix). The ONLY exercising I can do, is
Upper Bodywork. There is SUCH a TERRIBLE Stigma out there, that if
you are "fat", it's because you Don't Take Care of Yourself,
and you are Constantly Easting. People need to figure out that THOSE reasons
are NOT what is going on with the MAJORITY of Overweight People!
