The Cougs will be just fine. St. Mary's is a great team. We are seeing
great improvement with the young players. The future looks bright for years.
We just need some more quality big men and they will be terrific.
A tough loss if you're a Cougar fan and a Great Victory if you cheer for
the Gaels... BYU had a ton of opportunities... A big lesson on why every free
throw is imporatnt... Haws had a great game but missed an opportunity to put BYU
up by 9 right before the half when the 92% FT shooter missed the front of a one
and one...The biggest issue however, (in my mind) deals with the
fact that the Cougs gave St.Mary's a 30' inbound pass uncontested
after Haws hit what should have been the game winner... The only shot that St.
Mary's had was a Transition Basket and so I guess I would have called
timeout after Haws made basket to set the Defense and get some heigth on the
inbound pass... Put a taller guy on Dellavadeva and make him shoot over the
Defender. One of the biggest heartbreaker's I have seen, rivaled
ony by the USA Gold Medal Loss to Russia in 1972, and the Duke win over Kentucky
in the early 90's in the elite 8... The Ainge basket against Notre Dame was
also like that (only we got to cheer on that one).
6 turnovers. I swear by blood pressure shoots up every time I see Carlino with
the ball! No doubt the Cougs needs more consistent, steady production for their
point guard. If you compare Matt's stats over the past two seasons,
there's no marked improvement. He's pretty steady across the board, if
not dropped slightly. That's no where near the "improvement" we
were expecting out of the point guard position. Come on, Matt. We've got
faith in ya, but you gotta pick up your game. My heart can't handle
Re: Poyman- "The biggest issue however, (in my mind) deals with the fact

Haws hit what should have been the game winner." I couldn't agree with
you more. That's where not only the players fell asleep at the switch after
Haws' basket, but the coaching staff did as well. With 2.5 seconds
remaining, you call a time-out and draw up a defensive plan to prevent such
uncontested plays-- the inbound pass and the shot itself. I've seen
matadors do better than Winder did "defending" Dellavedova's shot.
But, give the Aussie some credit. That was a heck of a shot. Broke our hearts,
but a heck of a shot!
It was a great shot, and it should teach the Cougars a valuable lesson about
playing the entire game. I have not seen BYU play well for th4e number of
minutes in a game that they should in order to beat the good teams. I expected
the loss and I got it. Davies needs to be better at not fouling out and being
in foul trouble so much. He's a great player who needs to play. Oh well,
It looks like another 3rd place finish in the WCC for us and I now worry big
time for an NCAA bid. It's not looking good for that. They really needed
to split with Gonzaga and St Mary's and win all the rest. It's not
Is Davies still nursing a sore ankle? We need some truth out here, if it
isn't injury, then set him on the bench. If it is injury, it would be nice
to know, and lay off the kid.His game is sparse, and the only two
explanations I can think of: Injury, or poor coaching to help him be a better
I repeat myself, but this team is not there yet. They'll be pretty good,
but not great. But they are improving. I don't see them in the NCAAs this
year. They just can't beat good teams.
Sometimes those lucky shots just don't fall your way. IF only we had just
made one of our missed baskets, if only.
One other big thing led to the loss. On the next to the last possesion just
prior to the big three pointer to end the game Dellavedova ran over and pushed
off his man in an obvious charging call but the result was a basket for St Marys
to tie the game and the Aussie still in as it would have been his 5th foul.
hummm 6'-9" and no rebounds ? oh yea..I was too busy chasing the
point guard at mid court to be in a position to rebound..Is he really that
undisciplined? or just bad coaching.Whos stearing the ship.
@ jim greding- I thought the same thing when Davies was called for his 5th foul.
My guess is squarely his undisciplined nature. He's not taking over games
the way he should as a Senior.
Doesn't matter! BYU will win 17-18 games this year. My Butler Dogs will
beat The Zags tomorrow...BYU will lose two to Gonzaga...and a few others. Its
like a death spiral!!Trust me, I know, Utah has been in one for a
while now...You'll beat SD...that's a good thing!
The Cougz played acceptable D for the last 2.5 seconds. If they had called a
timeout, then St. Mary's could have set up a play and still could have got
off a 40 foot shot at the buzzer. The 2 closest defenders did a decent job of
pressuring him a little and not trying to take a charge and not giving him a
chance to pick up a tacky foul which could have let him tie it at the free throw
line. He was taking 2 running steps and not just pulling up so if the defenders
had tried to more closely pressure Delly then Delly could have tried to initiate
contact. Forcing someone to make a 40 footer to beat you is still OK defense.
rebounding is about wanting the basketball more than anyone else...either
offence or defense..clearly BYU was expecting the ball to always go in the hoop
and were just standing around,,,they need to want it more....I dont have the
stats ,,but I would bet Sharp has more rebounds per min, played than anyone
else..and he was polishing the pine when they needed boards.
I am still wondering why we didn't get the ball to Anson Winder after
Dellavadova got his fourth foul? Either he gets a relatively easy basket or his
fifth foul. Advantage Cougars. We also had some very dumb
possessions, Davies cranking up a three with 25 seconds on the shot clock, his
forced post moves when the team had been hitting threes, some drives by Carlino
that went nowhere.
Apparently "hail Marys" really work. It was a well fought game by both
teams and my hat goes off to them both.
