Good luck next year U. May you have a better year then this last one!

How can the Utes bookend their 10-loss season with wins, if they play Utah State before Weber State?

"When Chris Hill refused to schedule BYU, it ceased being a rivalry game."

Which, of course, explains why the MUSS only rushed the field THREE times.

    yawwwwwn!

The "irrelevance" game is soooo boring.

Now that we have the cougies chiming in on Utah's conference schedule, we wait for Tommy-Boy to release BYU's '13 schedule to see which of the usual suspects (Idaho State, New Mexico State, etc) will appear in late November.

  • Ufan Salt Lake City, UT
    Jan. 10, 2013 2:22 p.m.

Fun schedule, lots of home games, but questionable chances of improving from last season's 5-7, especially with Stanford and Oregon replacing California and Washington.

The Utes may have to sweep their non-conference games in order to qualify for a bowl.

  • Utes22 SPRINGVILLE, UT
    Jan. 10, 2013 2:32 p.m.

I really like the way the schedule looks. A lot of comments trying to bring them down before the first snap, but coming from fans of opposing teams it isn't unexpected. This schedule won't make it easier for the Utes to become bowl eligible then last years but I do have high hopes. If nothing else because I think Coach Whittingham learned a lot from the last few years and realizes if he doesn't start adjusting to the way football is played in the Pac-12 he will find his time on a very slippery slope. Regardless, August 29 couldn't seem farther away. Good luck in the offseason.
    Go Utes!!!

I see a lot of losses on tap for the utah. Interesting how their schedule has gotten tougher at the same time they have gotten worse. I wonder if their is a connection?

The one loss Utah won't have is the week they play BYU. Based on the last 10 years, the odds are with Utah in that game.

Outside of the three in state teams we could lose them all next year. Utah State got their once a decade win from the Utes last year, Weber has no chance and BYU is well, BYU. The Utes should feel lucky for playing in a state with so many creme puffs.

  • VegasUte Las Vegas, NV

Challenging schedule for sure. We should be 4-1 going into the Stanford game, depending if Mora is still coaching UCLA.

Funny how so many southies have to post on this story considering how they don't even have a completed schedule yet, their coaching staff is in turmoil - again, and their 2013 recruiting class is so abysmal. I guess when you have nothing to be happy about, you have to make fun of big brother.

Sorry to burst you bubble, but the "start" of the 2013 season will be even worse, more like 1-9.

I've been waiting for this and I've earned the right. I predicted the Uteys would go 5-7 last year and heard nothing but Utey fans saying, "NO WAY...10-2, 11-1" Well my great football knowledge tells me again that the Uterus will be 5-7 again. Oh, here it comes, "NO WAY 10-2...ROSE BOWL....NEVER!

    PS Nice OC. LOL!

I think this year proved it was Anderson not Witty that made the Uteys respectable.

  • 32843 PROVO, UT
    Jan. 10, 2013 5:30 p.m.

Wow. Ute fans need to calm down and be rational for a second or two. Set your pathetic BYU fixation aside long enough to consider the reality of Utah's situation. The only thing they have going for themselves right now is the the fact they play at home so often at the beginning of their season. That can help get a win or two they typically wouldn't get. This is a BRUTAL schedule and even though you have a couple of cream puffs (Weber State and Colorado) on it it's not looking good to improve so much over the 2012 season as to do much better in 2013.

Whittingham is a good coach, so there's that. But, the U is losing most of its talent on defense and who do they even have coming back on offense to give any of you the right to be thinking of a 9 win season? Again, this isn't about how much you hate BYU, or how the Y's schedule stacks up against the U's. If you need to make it about the Y to make yourself feel better about the train wreck that's coming, well, ok.

That's a big-time schedule. Weeks 3 through 10 are going to be brutal, but it also provides opportunity for great things if Utah performs.

  • manutd San Diego, CA
    Jan. 10, 2013 11:11 p.m.

tough schedule for sure. but great games and matchups.
opportunity to make some noise if you knock off stanford/oregon/usc.

same for byu if they can pull out a few wins against the likes of notre dame/texas/wisconsin/boise st/georgia tech/virginia. those arent cream puffs.

i think utah will end up with a winning record and be bowl eligible. same for byu,
but who cares about bowl games. both byu and utah need to make some noise next season. be competitive. hang with the big boys and beat a few of them.

    byu game a guaranteed win?
    in provo? dont think so.
thats why it is such a great rivalry.
its almost always a close game, down to the last play.
    rarely a blow out.

    @ JohnInSLC

While the official BYU schedule has yet to be released, it appears that it will be:
    Virginia
    Texas
    Utah State
    Utah
    Georgia Tech
    Houston
    Boise State
    Wisconsin
    Notre Dame
    Middle Tennessee
    Hawaii

I don't see Idaho State or New Mexico State on the schedule or Weber State, Washington State or Colorado. Six of BYU's 2013 opponents went to bowl games and one played for the national championship. It looks like an entertaining schedule, just like Utah's. I'm looking forward to the last game in the BYU-Utah rivalry and looking forward even more to 2014 without Utah on the schedule. Hopefully that date will be filled with a better team. Good luck with the 2013 season. I'm thinking that Utah will be 5-7 again, maybe 4-8. BYU: 7-5

Jon Wilner - Ranking the PAC 12 OOC Schedules

    8. Utah
The lineup: vs. Utah State, vs. Weber State, at BYU
Comment: How good will Utah State be without coach Gary Andersen? The answer matters to the Pac-12, given that two teams face the Aggies. If they don’t miss a beat, Utah will have a difficult time winning two OOC games.

Wilner obviously doesn't think the Utes have much of a chance of beating BYU next season.

With a lot of luck and a few weird things to help, I see the utes possibly winning 4 games. Five wins would take a miracle, six or more would mean a couple PAC opponents decide to forfeit.

On the bright side the Utah basketball team is exceeding all expectations. They are back a couple of years early. Loveridge is one of the top four or five collegiate players in the state this year.

    Ducky,

"I'm not sure how watching team after team hand it to you at res is "awesome" to watch for a utah "fan", but whatever floats your boat."

If watching good team after good team come to RES didn't float Ute fans' boats then you'd hear us clamoring to rejoin the MWC, the WAC, or even go independent ... but then you don't hear any of that do you???

I guess you STILL don't understand that the rest of the country doesn't get as much pleasure out of empty victories as BYU does. 25 basketball wins while in the WCC? 10 wins while playing nobody in football? We'll leave that excitement for you and your friends down south, and good for you, go get 'em tiger ... errrr cougar!

Utah wont be good for a few more years!

    Its pretty simple!

3-9 this year is my bet!

Thats including a win against BYU, this game can go either way!

The biggest Joke these two schools wont play each other!

I dont care if the Utes and Cougar athletic offices think it hurts both teams!
    Its a rivalry,

I mean if Florida Florida State play end of the year and both are in different conferences, why Cant BYU and UTAH! 45 minute drives from each other.

Its a sold out game! I know way to many fans are horrid at just being humble anymore, but that is what sports gives us. ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN.

I use to love college football,

Last 4 years, Ive grown to hate it!

How can SEC win 7 national titles in row, how can a undefeated team get beat by 40 points in national championhip?

O because BOWL GAMES ARE hands down the WORST business move ever!
Was I the only one who noticed all the empty stadiums in bowl games, except for maybe... 3 games...
    National championship
    Rose Bowl
    Fiesta Bowl,

    THATS IT!

Compared to 5 years ago both of these schedules are light years ahead of where they were.
There were years when we'd hear someone was playing Arizona and Pitt or Miami and Georgia Tech and we thought that was a great year to be a football fan in Utah, but now there's a serious name nearly every week on the schedule.
Good for both of the schools for making it way better to be a college football fan in Utah than ever in the past. Hopefully they both improve and can be competitive week in and week out, that would be the icing on the cake.

    @Duckhunter

Fortunately for you Utah County people they don't make you pass a grammar and spelling exam before creating an account on this website.

    @BYU Zoobs

It's pretty sad that you comment on Ute news more than BYU news, anyone who says that one team or the other had a better season is full of it. Both teams had bad seasons, fortunately for BYU they schedule enough WAC opponents to get them a bowl game.

I'm saying BYU's bowl game was a joke, and so was their season. But I can admit at the same time that Utah's season was bad as well.

I don't understand your arguments either, Utah was worse than BYU but yet we beat you? How does that work? We should have beat OSU (If DVC didn't fumble) and you got crushed by them.

Both teams were bad, no matter how you want to spin it. I don't read BYU news, so my question is why are you so inclined to fill up our comment section instead of your own?

    Derek

"Utah was worse than BYU but yet we beat you? How does that work?"

The same way Colorado was worse than Utah last year, yet they beat U.

(Is that what you call good grammar?)

"I don't read BYU news, so my question is why are you so inclined to fill up our comment section instead of your own?"

If you don't "read BYU news", why did you devote your entire comment to filling up "your" comment section with whines about BYU?

"We should have beat[sic] OSU (If DVC didn't fumble) and you got crushed by them."

BYU should have beaten U, if Riley Nelson hadn't fumbled the snap that lead to Utah's go ahead scoop and score.

The OSU-BYU game was not nearly as lopsided as you characterized it to be. BYU was only down 28-24 with 8:55 left in the 4th Quarter, when a couple of pass interference calls on one OSU drive, and then a Riley Nelson pic six on BYU's next possession, lead to two quick TDs for OSU.

If you're going to spout off, at least you should try to know what you're talking about first.

  • FatMan86 West Jordan, UT

My hope for the Utes with this schedule is that they will finally get over their smug content with just being IN the Pac 12, and actually aspire to something far greater. It doesn't even have to be the Rose Bowl yet, but hopefully involves at least being in the discussion for the Pac 12 Champ game.

My hope for the Cougs with their schedule, is that they will find a way to move the ball offensively, and not make themselves look silly and inept against a legit program. Moving the ball on NMSU and Idaho dooesn't count. Weber St is more of a challenge than either of those.

My hope for both schools is that they will bring some football respect to the state of Utah. That National championship and that Sugar Bowl now both seem SO long ago.

  • Qwest Perfected Salt Lake City, UT
    Jan. 11, 2013 3:22 p.m.

This will be one of if not the toughest schedule the Utes have had in the programs history.

They should be able to win all of their non conference games so hopefully the amount of home games will help get them bowl eligible. I would be nice for the program to start another bowl game winning streak again this year. The extra practices that the NCAA allows makes it so important to qualify.

It's kind of funny the regular coug fans are on here once again pounding their chest. What they must not understand is that it only makes a sound of irrelevance. Your program wasn't even able to get their signature 10 wins against the low level WAC teams they play. It's sad that you can't recognize how in trouble your own program is.

As for the Utes, the future looks pretty bright, each year we receive more and more of our share of the PAC12 money and they keep investing that money into all the programs which will pay off with better recruits and more wins down the road.

    Go Utes!

Irrelevance is defined as rushing the field three times against the team U define as "irrelevant".

You're only fooling yourself if you think that more money is ever going to allow U to keep pace with the big boys of the PAC 12.

No, you're destined to be a perennial conference bottom dweller, fighting Colorado and WSU to stay out of the conference basement.

  • Qwest Perfected Salt Lake City, UT

    @ducky & sportsfan

Keep telling yourself whatever you need to in order to make yourselves feel better. Your mighty cougs barely made a bowl game this year even with the cupcakes they played in November.

It's crazy to not believe that a putting millions of dollars into the facilities won't make a difference in recruiting. The fact is that is what draws good athletic 17 and 18 year olds to your program in the first place. The Utes have only had two years of recruiting within the PAC12 obviously it has made them good enough to beat mediocre programs consistently such as your mighty cougs, but they still need to get better to compete with the higher level of competition found in a power conference. Any realistic Utah fan knew this would take time.

It's great to be a Ute!

LOL at the frantic and emotion chest pounding by another BYU-obsessed Ute.

Keep telling yourself that being a bottom dweller in any conference makes you special. The millions Utah is investing in new facilities won't even come to close to matching what other PAC 12 schools have already invested and will continue to invest.

Any realistic Ute should have realized by now that Utah was destined to be the next Arizona in the PAC 12; THIRTY years in the conference and still looking for its first Rose Bowl.

It's nice that you're proud of being a Ute, but that's not going to help U climb out of the PAC 12 basement.
