People should consider carrying a weapon when in the wild.

I had a similar encounter with a large dog walking on a
Bountiful street. I was carrying a weapon so I wasn't afraid.
They say dogs can sense fear, but I was able to genuinely
remain calm (because of the pistol I had) and my calmness
    helped diffuse the situation.

Predators fear of people in the past was learned behavior due to being shot at, that is rarely the case now days. They don't have an inborn fear of humans. Perhaps one could carry a flare if a gun makes you uncomfotable? All animals have a fear of fire.

A flare? Have you ever seen the amount of flaming material that just falls off a flare? I wouldn't want to be responsible for the bill that would accrue from fighting a fire started by a flare I was using to frighten away coyotes. I also know that there may be a lot of snow up there, but it isn't always so.
