Re-read the last 3 paragraphs of the article.It becomes obvious that
UTA couldn't afford to run the choo-choo's, but they built them
anyway.EVERY TIME they build a new rail line they take away more and
more of the buses. Another article yesterday referenced UTA taking away some of
the frontrunner trains to Ogden also.The 811 bus is one of the most
heavily used going into Provo (and UVU). I can't imagine their thinking
having it end at this odd location.Carpenter CLAIMS (from the
article)that patron input resulted in those changes. I wonder: are those
"surveys" on file so we can all see them anytime at UTA offices? Or did
the guys with the 6 figure salaries make them up?Prediction: UTA
will be coming to the taxpayers again within 2 yrs. to ask for more assigned tax
revenue, or they'll eliminate bus travel almost entirely. They'll try
raising the fares first. Trains are horrifically expensive to run.
More than most people can imagine.But - the trains get the bosses a
raise. Thats why we have trains.
It is only 12 blocks. I have a hard time believing that the 12 blocks was that
much of a strain on the budget. Once again, UTA lies and we the taxpayers have
to pick up the tab. Keep digging DesNews. There is more to this story than
what they are saying.
There are many stories far more compelling than a couple weekend bus runs
stopping a little short. By and large the majority of commuter travel times
were at least *doubled* by the recent changes by UTA management. It's nice
for the community to have a mass transit bus to get to Jazz games and BYU games
I guess, but 95% of the ridership is commuter. Those commuters are trying to
figure out what to do now that their 2 hours a day commuting has been
unceremoniously transformed into 4 hours a day commuting with dangerous rail
crossings and other unnecessary problems. I hope some of these more
illustrative stories make it into the press. UTA certainly hasn't been
interested in them.
We better get used to it, the state of Utah and UTA has built us an
unsustainable white elephant transpiration system we can't keep in
operation or pay for by passenger fares. UTA was shut down and disbanded in the
1950's because it was not sustainable and feasible tax/private funded
operation required to pay investor dividends. UTA and TRAX was
supposed to be an independent self sustaining transportation system that a small
tax fund and passenger use would sustain, but without any more federal funding
loss of revenue they hoped to inspire has put this program into a declining and
unsustainable program.The UTA//TRAX system has been a pipe dream
with only one purpose, move workers from urban cities to downtown with no
thought or consideration of lean use periods when people go shopping, to
doctors, and doing consumer duties. UTA will treat basketball games with
spectral service that is not cost effective because of overtime and manpower
needs and its losing money for them. This public transportation system in Utah
single purpose construction and operation has become its downfall.
I'm not sure why UTA even bothered to run the 811 on Sundays since it
doesn't connect to any bus service in Orem and Provo anymore, and
doesn't extend down into Provo now. The route used to run all the way down
through Provo. Recently it was shortened to terminate near BYU. Now it stops
at UVU. Come on, UTA, use some sense. That routing may work on
weekdays, but on Sundays there are no other connections, and most riders would
be trying to get INTO town. Most of the cost of the route is the driver and the
35 miles from Sandy, not the 5 miles into Provo. Make a Sunday routing for this
bus that makes sense.
You want some cost saving ideas. I have a few.1. Get rid of this
gray area that claims that UTA is neither a private nor public institution.
Having a private group able to use state tax dollars is wasteful.2.
Get rid of free fare zones that appear to be useless to people who could use
them. Having the trax free from Courthouse to SL center is dumb.3.
Pay attention to commuters. Find out what they need. Sporting events will
drawn revenue regardless of if you increase number of buses/trains.4. Realize that we are one long valley. Have Ogden and Provo hubs so that
you can delegate the needs.5. Don't allow the man in charge to
receive 200k for the rest of his life when he really didn't improve the
Here's something to think about. The UTA route 807 used to run from the
Highland\Cedar Hills area to SLC 4X a day (twice in the morning, twice in the
afternoon) and was packed to capacity with people standing. Now the route takes
people to Thanksgiving point which is admittedly shorter, but it runs 4X in the
morning and 4X in the afternoon. It would be interesting to see how many miles -
if any - UTA saved by changing the 807 route. My guess is that it is almost the
same number of miles but probably 1-2 more drivers. I would guess that the 807
costs more to run now than before but now it only serves a very small handful of
people. I saw 8 people on the bus yesterday. The rest have started driving
because they cant handle the 45-60 minutes added to their commute each way.
I'll start driving on Monday myself. So the UTA hasn't likely saved
any money with the route change but they now serve fewer people and have forced
more people to drive. Seems like a problem to me, but I dont make $200k a year,
so what do I know?

Frontrunner has been a nightmare this week. Frontrunner was 10 minutes late
this morning, which made on time connections to TRAX imposable. Then it was
eighteen minute wait for TRAX to move. I am sure UTA will explain to employers
that it is their fault we are so late for work every day. I wouldn’t
complain if Frontrunner had these problems all the time. But 99% of the time it
runs great but if this new line addition is any indication of the future of
frontrunner all daily commuters will stop using it. So I am back to driving
to Salt Lake instead of taking the train. I will use the $200.00 a month for
gas instead of funding UTA’s failed project. UTA your expansion is a
big FAIL I can wait to see how smooth it is as you move farther South and North
with new lines.
