Ty was always a classy guy that fans and players looked up to. He truly deserves
the Hall Of Fame. He made good decisions on and off the field. Not all tough
guys do that.
Ty was a class act and a fierce competitor. It's great to see him add
National College Football Hall of Fame to his long list of outstanding
Hmmmmmmm? Interesting timing for Ty Detmer to come to town. Don't you
RedTry reading the article: Ty was already honored in
Provo earlier this season after his Hall of Fame selection was announcement, now
he's going to New York City to be officially inducted."On
Tuesday, their son [Ty] will be inducted into the College Football Hall of fame
during ceremonies in the Empire Room at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on Park Avenue
in New York City."
RedWishful thinking (or pot stirring).Would YOU
literally sell the hunting farm so you can come and be subject to (some) BYU
fans' disloyalty and criticism? My son met him at the game in
Texas. He IS just as good as advertised.
Ty would make a great head coach at BYU!
Congratulations to Ty.Very well deserved.
I worship the very ground he walks on (just kidding, don't rat me out to my
Bishop). Deter was and still is the best quarterback the Y ever had. HE was
the whole package. Leadership, grit, toughness, determination, brains, etc. He
was even better than McMahon.Bronco ought to be looking south for a
new offensive guru.
Sorry True Blue,I'm a Ute. Just stirring the pot. You caught
me.I think change is a good thing. Hopefully Ty is ready to get
Interesting that there are undertones and flat out cries for Detmer to join the
coaching staff at the Y. You fickle fans, give him three seasons of slightly
above average performance, and you will forget all of the good he has done for
your school as a player. I loved watching Detmer as a kid. If he is as smart
as the article states, he will stay away from Provo and the worst fair weather
fans in America.
54-10 - Thanks for the only positive comment I've ever read from U about
BYU. Ever thought of updating your moniker to 24-21 so you're not out of
date?Ty is a class act. I'd love to see him coaching in Provo.
Now might he a good time to offer since he has a daughter attending BYU.
As a Ute fan Ty Detmer drove me crazy, I couldn't see him leave Provo soon
enough. That should about sum it up ... the guy was a phenomenal college
QB, one of the best of all time. On top of that he has always conducted himself
with class and humility. This is a great honor and Ty is more deserving of it
than most. Congrats to Ty Detmer and BYU fans everywhere who get to celebrate
A great leader, indeed. Ty "walked the walk" Good for him! Loved the
Another Cougar in the hall of fame. Joins a bunch of others with more sure to
come over time. Congratulations Ty.As for him going to BYU as the
head coach or even o-coordinator are concerned, what makes people think he is
ready for those positions? What makes people think he would be great at them? I
mean it is possible he could be great at either or both but we have no way of
knowing that. If Bronco wanted to put him on his staff I think qb coach would be
a good place to start and work his way up from there. Obviously his football IQ
is high but you don't just hop into those positions and expect to have
success, look at brian johnson at utah, that has turned into a joke. Even with
experience it doesn't always work out, Doman had several years experience
as a qb coach and it sure hasn't translated to him being a good
o-coordinator, yet. It takes time and experience to do those things
but it would sure be fun to see him get started on it and succeed at them over
Ty Detmer ,Thanks for the unforgettable memories.
@ Flashback.. Too funny! Thanks for the laugh.
The good ole days of BYU football when the Y had a QB who could throw for 300+
per game and BYU could match up with anyone in the nation....including National
Champ Miami. What a great game! Detmer was the real deal. Undersized as he was
he won the Heisman plus played 11 years in the NFL. It helped to have Norm Chow
as coordinator too!!
Ty Detmer is my all-time favorite BYU football player. He was awesome to watch.
This is a well deserved award.
@DuckhunterFunny how Utah-related topics always creep into your
comments. And at that, your comment is once again a bit over the top. You wrote:
"look at brian johnson at utah, that has turned into a joke."Calling any new coach a joke when he was dealt a tough hand in his first year
is not only unfair but can only be based on extremely unrealistic expectations.
Let's remember that Utah had a completely rebuilt O-line, and injured
1st-string RB, and ended up starting a 3rd-string freshman quarterback while
competing in the 2nd best rated conference in the country. In other
words, no one knows much about Brian Johnson as an O-coordinator just yet. My
OPINION is that Brian actually did a pretty decent job with what he had to work
with and seemed to progress as the season went along. That said, my guess is
you'll start telling us that far more Utah "fans" (LOL) are calling
for Brain Johnson to be replaced than there are Cougar fans calling for
Doman's head, right? Over on SLTrib of course.
I would love to see Ty come to BYU as OC and be groomed for Head Coach someday.
He has the best mind for football ever to step on the field at BYU.
I still remember running onto the field after the Miami win. I was in the crowd
like so many others and suddenly the crowd shifted as Ty was trying to run into
the locker room. We mauled him...it was crazy. He was a great QB and a total
blast to watch. It's awesome to know that he's been a class act his
whole life. Great to see him get the accolade.
Ty would have to start as an assistant coach of some sort - perhaps a good fit
would be to replace Coach Doman as QB coach, so as Doman would be able to
concentrate full-time as the OC. The most needed spot and where he would be
most effective, would be as OC. He is a supurb x's and o's guy.
Either spot would be a great addition to the BYU football team, and maybe
something the AD, Holmoe, would embrace. However, would Detmer even be
interested in coming back to Utah? Maybe that would work well with his hunting
ranch in the summer, but would probably be a conflict in the fall and winter.
Mabe his dad or someone else could run it in his absence. I guess time will
Ty Detmer was college football's version of John Stockton. Utah (the
state, that is) was lucky to have both!
I sat (actually, stood, since it would have been impossible to see the game
sitting) directly behind the Miami bench during the BYU-Miami game. It was fun
watching the stunned looks on the faces of the Miami players as BYU's
"slow, untalented" receivers were constantly getting open all over the
field to receive crisp, accurately thrown passes from this smallish BYU QB. My
favorite moment was watching Ty sprint into the endzone after a touchdown pass
to head butt one of his team mates.Great stuff!Detmer
threw a lot of picks during his career at BYU, but he never let that discourage
him. He completed many more TD passes for over 15,000 yards. Not bad for a QB
that was so small that he had to move around in the pocket and scramble just to
open a passing lane.I would love to have Detmer return to BYU as the
quarterbacks coach, but he would probably need several years of coaching
experience at the collegiate level before he'd be ready to be Offensive
Coordinator or Head Coach.Congratualations on your Hall of Fame
@motorbikeI love how you pay more attention, have more angst, and
respond more, to my posts than any others on here. Yes johnson was a joke this
year. utah finished below 100 in total offense. The joke is that whittingham
thought an unexperienced 25 year old would get any better of a result than he
got. There's your joke. It's funny. My point was look at
the evidence we have right here in front of us that you can't just grab a
guy with little to no experience and make him your offensive coordinator.
johnson showed that to us. So all of the BYU fans wanting Detmer brought in and
immediately made into the offensive coordinator, and some even want him to be
the head coach, need to have a look at the results of others who took those jobs
with little to no experience. johsnon was an easy example to make that is
all.Oh and yes there are absolutely dozens, if not hundreds, of utah
"fans" on the trib, and for that matter here on the dnews, calling for
johnson to be replaced. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it. Silly to
I was at BYU during the Ty Detmer era. I got to see the win over the University
of Miami and the schillacking the Cougs gave Penn State. Coach Paterno was so
angry that he walked from Cougar Stadium all the way to their hotel on Center
Street. Those were the days when the Cougars could pull off those big wins
because they had better talent and they were hungry to win. Unfortunately, the
team has lost its way. I went to the San Jose State game this season and the
players on the sidelines were acting as if they were eating brownies and
drinking juice after a fireside. I also don't think that Ty Detmer should
get his hands dirty by joining the BYU football coaching staff. If things go
wrong on offense, the fans will blame him. Let's keep him as a sports hero
and not mess that up. Every major college or university needs its sports icons.
Congratulations Ty. You deserve this wonderful award.
Very nice tribute to Ty Detmer, Dick. Good Job. He was an amazing college QB.
Even though he wasn't known for his arm strength, he was able to throw
strikers over the top with regularity. Leadership, smarts, grit, accuracy, and
field vision. He truly had the whole package. Truly deserving of this
honor.I know he had some financial issues recently. At his disposal
is a fast-track vault to a HC position of a D1 school with its 7 figure
salaries. I would think he would at least show some interest in the prospect if
@DuckhunterYou've seriously regressed. I was honestly starting
to find most of your comments to be pretty level-headed. But lately it seems
you're not running on all cylinders. Pretending comments you make are
factual doesn't make it so. You're blue goggles have you way off base
