I saw the whole thing on BYUtv. Totally awesome! Congratulations ladies!
Let's see a final four appearance!
If BYU continues to finish like the last two games, they are going to get
crushed in the next round. The last two games they have had some great
opportunities, but no one is coming close to finishing. North
Carolina just scored 9 in the last game.
Congrats!!If there was ever a time to find your offense again, the
next game is it.
Great finish, a shame for Marquette to lose a well played game on PKs
Three quick thoughts: 1. The Cougs hung tough and got the win but will need
to play much better in next round to have a chance, 2. The referee was brutally
bad. The non calls late for MU goalie touching ball with hands outside the box
and the blatant foul on BYU player (Holmoe I think) were beyond believable. The
game never should have went to OT. And 3. The PK by Ringwood may have been
the worst kick in college soccer this year, possibly in many years.
It would be awesome to host UNC. The best women's program ever and the
team of Oahi from Alta. She returns to Utah for one last shot at a Title.
Keep it up and soon there will be a New team needing to use LES. It sure
isn't needed by the football team. Being able to watch the last few games
on BYU Tv has been great!
Well played defense. But... to the solution to end a game on "free
throws" is just plain stupid. Good for us we hit ours but that's no way
to end a tournament game.
BYU expended so much energy the first half and came away with nothing. Marquette
used theirs in the second half. I thought the reffing was not horrendous
although there were a few missed calls at important shifts in the game. The one
thing that I have seen in a lot of these games is how the other players hold,
drag, pull and basically tie up our line. Is that okay now?
RockOn, if the World Cup can handle settling the result on PK's, I'm
sure college soccer can.
100% agree to following assessment: "The referee was brutally bad. The non
calls late for MU goalie touching ball with hands outside the box and the
blatant foul on BYU player (Carlee Payne-Holmoe) were beyond believable. The
game never should have went to OT"
I refereed enough low-level youth soccer games when my kids were growing up to
know what was probably going through at least the "center" ref's
head in the BYU-Marquette game. I doubt he was consciously making bad calls (or
non-calls) against BYU, but sometimes an inexperienced (or otherwise
not-so-good) soccer ref's sense of "equity" impedes his ability to
make the right call--especially if it favors the home team--to the point where
he's almost trying to "engineer" a certain "fair" result
(PKs in this instance). Marquette looked like the more-dangerous team for much
of the game, so it was only human that the ref wouldn't want to
"throw" the game to BYU; however, a better ref would have called the
Marquette keeper for handling the ball outside the penalty area and would have
called a PK when Payne-Holmoe was shoved late in the game. I'm just glad
that the game finally went BYU's way, although if their finishing
doesn't improve, they won't go beyond the next round.
