Dick,Thanks for the wonderful article.Mark
Fascinating article. He's a complex person. Glad to have him play for the
BYU needs to do the honorable thing and put Jim McMahon in their hall of fame
for outstanding humanitiarian service to the communities he has lived in. That
service was/is worth far more than the credits he has left on his degree. Come
on, BYU! Award McMahon an honorary doctorate of humor and humanity and let him
Very good article. Let's hope this medical procedure on his kneck works!
Give him a PHD and get him into the hall of fame. Any other offering would be a
Jim should be the next QB Coach at BYU. How interesting would that be? Lavell
McMahon always delivered! Time for BYU to deliver.
Good luck Jimbo. I really hope this does the trick. I also wish we had something
for the many others who suffer from dementia as they get older. Its really a
shame when people reach a time in their life when all they have are their
memories and they start to lose that. Keep us up to date on what is
happening, Dick. Ute fans are pulling for Jim as well.
Put him in the Hall. He is and was a Cougar. He helped build the BYU mystique.
Who deserves it more?
I agree with all tht has been said about giving Jim an honorary degree. The hall
is incomplete without Jim there. He belongs...
He's a funny dude.He was great for the sport.Free spirit all
Very nice article. A quarterback at BYU who could throw the ball. I remember
Put him in the BYU Hall of Fame and retire his jersey NOW!!! He certainly has
We need a petition that says "Because Jim McMahon or anyone else would be
incapable of completing his college course work due to a debilitating mental
condition that will be with him for the rest of his life, BYU should immediately
induct Jim McMahon into the BYU Hall of Fame." After all, they would do so
if he died. Time to induct.
Thanks for the great article Dick!I loved watching Young, Nielson,
Shiede, Wilson, Bosco, Detmer, Sarkisian, Beck, and Hall play, but my all-time
favorite BYU QB is Jim McMahon.Hopefully, BYU and McMahon will be
able to find a way to fill the one glaring omission from BYU's Sports Hall
Jimbo has reported he is not interested in being in the Hall. So why should we
be interested in getting him in? He has not exactly been a good representative
of the school. Take away his accomplishments on the field, and what is
remaining? Speaking of what he did as QB, in my opinion he was the best BYU
ever had, if not the best college QB ever. I loved seeing him play. Best wishes
on the medical procedures.
@AZJazzFanBecause it's the BYU Sports HOF. It's not the BYU
Student Athlete HOF, and you agree with me that Jim is the best QB in a long
string of great BYU QB's. It seems silly to not put one of the best players
in school history in the HOF over a couple of credits. Even though he
wasn't the greatest Mormon, he is(I know from personal experience) a great
@Noodlekaboodle"Even though he wasn't the greatest Mormon,
he is(I know from personal experience) a great person."Jim
McMahon wasn't a Mormon. Probably part of the reason he's not in the
HOF already. He was a party animal and the best QB BYU's ever seen ...
It's nice to see so much LDS support here to induct him without any
judgment or bitterness.
LValfreDon't kid yourself; not being a Mormon has NOTHING to do
with with Jim McMahon not being in the BYU HOF.Jim McMahon is one
the greatest players ever to play for BYU and he deserves to be in BYU's
HOF, but his religion is irrelevant.
All these favorable comments to McMahon give me the tingles being from Chicago
and all. It's nice to see this kind of unified support for someone who was
non-LDS and well ... pretty much against most of what they believe in a lot of
ways. This thread has encouraged me to look up McMahon's BYU
highlights on youtube later. Never seen his college days. Should be interesting!
Best college QB EVER! Can you imagine if we had him at QB this year with that
defense? BCS bowl here we come!Should Jimmy Mac be in the BYU HOF?
Only if you want the best college QB in history in there...
Jim McMahon + BYU Hall of Fame = Awesome.
He was a good pro QB, and a great college QB. I watched him take apart teams
week after week. In my mind he was second only to Steve Young as BYU's best
He partyed with all the other BYU students.Believe it.
Put him in!!!! Jim helped me to love the Bears. The man can lead. Good thing he
can play, cause the man can't sing (super bowl shuffle). Thanks for all the
great memories, headbands, and everything else. Please BYU PUT JIM IN.
To whom do we send the letters making the case for Jimmy Mac? Holmoe?
President Samuelson? The Alumni Association? Cougar Club? or ESPN? I wish BYU would just step up and do the right thing.
Dick listed just a few reasons why Jim is my favorite quarterback, at any level,
of all time.He could outplay most teams at the game of chess. He
would beg the defense to blitz, those were exciting plays because he would burn
them more times than not. Always made things interesting on the field and was a
joy to watch. I could go on for hours. Thanks for the
memories field general and good luck.
Hey, LValfre, don't know how many McMahon hi-lites there are, but the kid
could flat out play. And he had the huge advantage of sitting out for the first
two years for the most part and then being handed the keys to the high powered
car for two years. See if you can find the play near the goal line where he
faked a hand off, then whirled 360 degrees in the air and hit a receiver for a
TD. Lots of great plays. And watch the Miracle Bowl when it was 4th down and
LaVell called for a punt and Jim refused to come off the field. To LaVell's
credit, he acquiesced and the rest is history.
I would also like to see Jim in the Hall of Fame. I am sure that those who
decide have the best interests of BYU in mind, and there are always many
ramifications to a decision like this which fans don't know about and
cannot consider in their enthusiasm. I think it will work out in the end, but,
I'd like to see it happen while Jim is still healthy enough to enjoy it.
If the concern has to do with some of the rebellious things he may have done in
his youth, the Church could demonstrate how good Christians behave by forgiving
some of those things and putting him in the HOF, with or without a degree. Of
course, there are many other students who did not quite make it to their
degrees, (ahem, such as myself), and they may wonder why they cannot be given an
honorary degree also, but, we haven't given as much to BYU in athletics as
Jim has. Don't put him on the Dean's list; that would be wrong. But
I see no harm in putting him on the HOF, even if it sets a precedent.
Don't know who you are, and maybe you brought as much attention to BYU as
Jim did, and maybe you didn't. The article is about Jim and how he made all
us feel awesome. PUT JIM IN first and then we can work on you.
