Just like last year, Utah got up big for BYU but then had a huge emotional letdown the following week. In spite of all their PAC-12 bravado it is obvious that Utah coaches, players and fans still take the rivalry with BYU as seriously as ever.

Okay here is the bye week. Use it like fall camp, work hard and get the offensive production way up. You need to score points to win in the PAC 12 this year.

Open up the playbook please. You can't expect you r defense to win grind it out games in the PAC 12. This isn't the MWC. Teams are going to score points. You have to as well.

What a horrendous and embarrassing display. I know Ute fans aren't going to want to hear this, but this is why it was hard to give them credit for their big seasons in the MWC. These teams in the Pac-12 are just better. They're bigger, they're faster, they're stronger and Utah simply doesn't have the types of athletes it needs to compete.

This team feels a little like the 70's and 80's teams. Unfortunately that's not such a good thing in the win column. It looks like we can join the ranks of the throngs of unhappy souls in Happy Valley and "look forward to next year".

Hopefully this wakes Utah up. A lot of hype this year about going to the Rose Bowl. It will not happen in our lifetime. Utah is not on the same level as USC, Standord, Oregon, and as we saw last night, Arizona State. Sure, the Utes may upset one of them here or there, but they will never beat them all in the same year. Utah's best bet for BCS was staying in a mid tier conference. To put it in perspective, they are like Air Force or San Diego State in the Mt West. Even more so like Arizona State. ASU used to win all of the WAC championships until, like Utah, they went to the Pac 8 in the 70s. They have always been a non threatening member of the conference, going to the Rose Bowl once in 95. One more time than Utah will go.

No matter how arrogant they become (coaches, players, and fans), Utah will never be on the same level as USC, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, and Washington

BYU fans, you will never achieve that quest for perfection. Go FCS, there may be some good fortune for you there.

  • Hellooo Salt Lake City, UT

The Utes have stepped back a little this year, but will still be very competitive in the PAC-12 if they can improve their offensive line and defensive secondary play a little. That said, maybe the team should consider scheduling the Y more often as it least it is a guaranteed W, like other FCS teams.

I'm a BYU fan through and through. That being said, every BYU fan on this board crowing and reveling in the Utah loss are just a bunch of idiots. Honest to goodness, how is it that any BYU fan thinks that a Utah loss is good for us? It doesn't make our team any better, doesn't help with the Utah loss, or the Boise St. debacle. Doesn't make Nelson make better decisions. Its ridiculous. It'd be nice to be able to say that as a group BYU fans were smarter, or more forward thinking then their brethren who cheered for the U and wanted us to lose every game in humiliating fashion. No such luck. I hope Utah can get it together, the last thing I want on our record is a 3 point loss to a really bad team in the Pac-12. Hopefully Coach Whit figures this team out, and gets it turned around. (Hopefully Bronco does the same).

    @RepresentBlue,

The PAC10 got just what they wanted in Utah...a 12th team so that the conference will qualify for a $$ generating conf championship and a doormat team that won't ever qualify to play there. Colorado and Utah were perfect candidates and the PAC couldn't be happier.

  • CougFaninTX Frisco, TX
    Sept. 23, 2012 12:03 p.m.

I am true blue, and I actually cheer for the Utes againsts everyone except BYU and USU. With that being said, we both have to admit that neither of our teams look very good this year.

ASU is in the upper half of the PAC this year, but they will not be in the Championship game. Boise State is a shadow of its prior self, and neither of us could get past these winnable games.

Realistically, 7-5 looks very likely for BYU. I know it won't make anyone in red happy, but 4-8 seems very likely for the Utes (if U don't choke against the Buffs again); 5-7 looks a best case scenario. Just be glad U don't play Oregon or Stanford. My money's on Oregon to make the NC against Alabama.

  • Wildcat O-town, UT
    Sept. 23, 2012 12:34 p.m.

Well credit Utah for stepping up and playing with the big boys. I think any realistic fan would have said it would take at least five years to win a PAC-12 championship--they almost played in the championship game the first year--even though Oregon would have routed them.

TCU could have stayed in the MWC and probably been a BCS buster this year, but they want to step up their program and decided to play in the Big 12--TCU will probably have losses against K-State, OU, West Virginia. Who knows, they might surprise them. BYU sure back peddled out of the Big 12 and are still a little nervous at joining the Big East.

I think BYU bailed out of the Mountain West because they were afraid they couldn't compete there. They already lost to Boise State, and I think Nevada and Fresno State are probably better teams this year. USU always finds ways to lose in Provo, but some of the green-light games have gone to yellow: Utah State and San Jose State.

Why did BYU cancel their road game at LA Tech? Might have been a little nervous to play them--LOL!

    Painful.....

I was prepared to see my Utes lose more frequently than I would like them to in their new conference, but I wasn't prepared to see HOW they lose these games.

ASU was far and away the better team last night. Unless Utah makes more progress than usual as the season progresses, they may not go bowling this year.

Oh by the way, BYU just scheduled a home and home with Middle Tennessee State. Remember I told you that no big school will do a home and home with BYU (just a one game at their place or a two-for-one at best) and that BYU will have to go to the MAC, Sun Belt, or C-USA to fill up games? The prophecy is coming true! I can't post a link but it is in their paper, the Tennessean and on FBSschedules website.

Look for BYU to either join the Big East or go back on bended knee to Craig Thompson in a few years.

GO BLUE RAIDERS! (that is the mascot of Middle Tennessee State)

Cue the Lavern and Shirley Music, "We'll do it our way, yes our way, make all our dreams come true for me and you." BYU independence--go get'em!

  • sammyg Springville, UT
    Sept. 23, 2012 1:33 p.m.

Yep, the Utes are in the fetal position again.

After convincing themselves that they had a "stellar" defense and solid running game they are now reeling from the undoing of their team and their season.

I know its a hard pill to swallow but several of us told you so.

We knew our Riley was not the best QB around but we accepted him with the hope that things would work out. It didn't and it was no surprise. BYU fans have been typically patient with independence, the schedule and the challenges of putting together the combination of talent and coaches.

On the other hand the Utes believe they are Utah's gift to football. How funny is that.

When they fall, they fall hard.

I think this season will be worse than last year for the Utes. All of the other teams are starting to play real football.

Long road of humiliation ahead for the Utes me thinks. A definite possibility of no bowling.

You are right in poking fun at Utah's "stellar defense and solid running game." You have no idea how much it pains me to admit that...

But I about did a spit-take when reading your paragraph: "We knew our Riley was not the best QB around but we accepted him with the hope that things would work out. It didn't and it was no surprise. BYU fans have been typically patient with independence, the schedule and the challenges of putting together the combination of talent and coaches."

Do you even read what your fellow BYU fans write in their comments? Just browse the comments from last week - after BYU's losses to Utah and Boise State. If you don't have time (too busy trashing the Utes perhaps), trust me, the overriding tone of the comments isn't "patience."

I'm curious - are the Cougars the state of Utah's "gift to football?"

But back to the Utes - I expected to lose more in conference games in the Pac 12. And finishing in the top third will be a real challenge. But I didn't expect to get blown out on a regular basis.

How's that crimson kool aid? Did you not realize Utah had the way to that game "geased" because USC was on probation and ineligible; all the Utes had to do was beat Colorado in the final PAC 12 game in SLC? Remember they had less than 50 yards offense (and the O coordinator was the hearlded Chow) in the first half and LOST to the worst road team in America----who hadn't won a road game in 4 years?

Remember the UNLV 27, Utah 0 score a few years back when Whittingham said he "didn't know why they lost?"

It's hilairious how Ute partisans have everything bad to saw about BYU and then when Utah loses in style and BYU fans return the favor suddenly the Y fans are so insensitive. That's duplicious; that's Utah fans; that's the future of the PAC 12 experience. Get used to it.

MLH, could you please proof read your posts. They're an embarrassment to English teachers everywhere.

Everybody else, please calm down. BYU and Utah football teams are both mediocre this year. Neither has an offense, and while Utah's defense got exposed last night, BYU's defense has been tested by WSU in their first game under a new coach, Weber State, an anemic Utah offense and a Boise State team comprised of nearly all new players - in other words, we don't know how good they are.

So much of this squabbling between partisans reminds me of 5th grade playground rhetoric - all posturing by people who are incapable of backing it up. If the Cougars do well, it makes me happy but it does not make me a better person. I even hope the Utes do well, but I didn't seek a high ledge to jump from last night. I slept very well both Thursday night and Saturday night. Funny thing, I wasn't playing so I figure I don't deserve bragging rights either way and I am not going to kill my sell either way, either. It's a game.

Of course BYU will be just fine. They only have 3 more "real" games remaining then onto 5 WAC teams that they've been dominating for 40 years now.

You are already off to an 0-2 start, like last year when you only played 4 real teams you lost to 3. As of today, over the last three years BYU is 4-10 vs teams over .500. Not a good sign, unless that is you "gave" those 10 games away on purpose.

Quit complaining about BYU; you've dumped us; go away quietly!! Enjoy your new rival---Colorado, in Boulder this year."

    Desperate times in Provo! LOL!
It might be best for you to chose another avatar, graspingatstraws seems more fitting.

BTW, you did get the news that BYU lost to UTAH again right?

That was ugly for sure. Well if we listened to all the Yner fans we should just not play anymore games and just start practicing for next year.
We have dropped two games the season is young. This team has talent we just got punched in the chin, now its time to buckle down and get to business. I have notice that we always played with a chip on out shoulder as the underdog team that overachieved, since the pac-12 we have played as the overconfident team that grossly underachieved. Maybe well wake up and keep some playmakers on offense. Maybe QBs are important after all. Wynn great kid got hurt was never the same and we should have moved on. We are paying a dear price for that last year and this year. Wilson and Hansen are going to be future studs but the key word is future. We got exposed as a team that relies on our D way to much and when they get schemed and punched in the mouth first drive they didn't buckle down they broke. No matter, get things fixed, open the playbook and get some life in this team.
    GO Utes

Did you get the news - actually, it's not really news at all, since everyone except the red koolaid drinkers expected it all along - that the Utes are PAC cellar dwellers?

With losses to USC, UCLA and Oregon State in their next three games, the Utes will have to win 4 of their last 5 games just to be bowl eligible; and the Utes lost to 3 of those teams last season.

Just as during their WAC days, BYU has once again become Utah's bowl game, and the Utes are grasping at straws trying to pretend how being a bottom dweller is so great.

The Ute are 0-1 in the WAC - time to requisition a new screen name.

Uh oh, another BYU fan is melting down.
    Snack PAC needs help.

I would worry more about your upcoming schedule than Utah's. They are not determining your bowl hopes, you are. Especially now that the BCS busting mantra is officially over. LOL!

    LOL!

    flawed logic.
The yners that are on here gleefully bashing the utes are also then bashing their own team. This "terrible pac cellar dwellar" that has owned the yners for a decade now. It must really hurt losing so many times to such a "bad" team. Logic would suggest that hurt as much as it might you kind of hope that the teams that beat you, beat other decent teams proping up your embarrasing loss as not so bad. A lot of us U fans swallowed our pride and hoped that utah state would beat out their tougher teams however with the U dominating the Y as of late it seems Hate dimms all logic.
Down 24 - 7 in the 4th the best the Yners could do against such a terrible team is fall short and chalk up another loss to the U.

Nice dodge, but the only desperate meltdown I see is coming from the kids on the hill is pretending that being a PAC bottom dweller, again, somehow makes U big stuff.

    btw,

    last two games versus ASU
    BYU 13-10 in Tempe
    BYU 26-6 in Provo

    Utah 14-35 in SLC
    Utah 7-37 in Tempe

The Utes haven't beaten the Sun Devils since 1976. Did you really think that sewing a PAC 12 emblem on your jersey was all it was going to take to become "one of the big boys"?

6 of the last 8 BYU-Utah games have been decided by a touchdown or less in the final minutes of the game or in OT. That's hardly "owning" anything.

On the other hand, BYU continues finishing with better overall records and higher national rankings.

Desperation dims logic as the Utes once again try to spin another embarrassing meltdown after the euphoria of a big win.

Just like last year, the Utes crashed and burned after their BYU win, only this time, there's little chance that the Utes will be able to right the ship anytime soon with likely losses to USC, UCLA and Oregon State filling Utah's horizon for the next month.

Hey phoenix, as other have said. BYU is owned by a PAC 12 cellar dweller!
USU is looking good. Better watch out.

Oh yeah, BYU is 6-9 all time against San Jose St!

Again, why is BYU being brought up in a post about the Utah-ASU game? Not sure why those people aren't following their own team....but ok. Anyway, as fans lets stay positive and support our team instead of trashing them.

Isn't it hard to be a byu fan? They have to use other teams to make the Utes look bad. I would think after being beat 3 in a row, 8 out of 11, 13 out of 20 you may want to take a break on the team that dominates you. BYU fans call us cougar haters we are but at least we can use our own team to dog the cougs, where the cougs (fans) have to use all the teams we are playing. BYU CANNOT BEAT BYU, go Hawaii.

All the SC T-shirts your book store ordered will be there by Friday.

No matter how far the conversation of the BYU-Utah rivalry goes, no one will win. BYU has bragging rights in other sports and education, and Utah has it in football. How about we all just watch the game and congratulate the other team?
