Utahn's acceptance of incompetent state government is appalling yet
universal. We can't seem to build a road, regulate an industry or provide
prision protection without cronyism, scandals and failure. Pray tell, exactly
how is Utah the Best Managed State?
"Best Managed State in the Country" is what I keep hearing and most
scandalous state is what I keep seeing and reading. Utah leaders (GOP
majority)?! I hope someday you can learn to walk the talk but probably not.
Kudos to EnergySolutions for being a good corporate citizen.
Keep EnergyPollutions from dumping waste in our great state. I remember not even
10 years ago when we wouldn't even allow trucks hauling nuclear waste to
travel on our roads. Now we are dumping waste in Moab, Tooele and who else knows
where. Tell everyone to keep their own waste, and quit burdening Utah and turing
it into a Waste Dump. We are better than that, right?
Like foxes guarding the hen-house....This is what happens when you
allow Corporations to police themselves and scream bloody-murder for LESS
Government. This is WHY we have elected officals and Government
over-sight!Corporations are not for the people and by the people,
They are about that all mighty $$$.And didn't Tea-Party
darling Sen. Mike [Mr. Alpine home fore-closure, GOP Nominating Convention
absentee] Lee promote, dare I say --- was bribbed, er uh -- heavily contributed
by said Energy Soultions?! BTW - Utah, you get what you pay for.
self regulation means do what you want in america. look up love canal.
Senator Daytons remake of the control boards to better reflect Energy Solutions
wants and needs is one of the scariest things to come out of the legislature in
For anyone not liking the grand irony in Utah politics--what is preached is not
always practiced--I like to believe I offer a better vision for us all. But
check my site and decide for yourself, voteutah.us. If you do like
what you see, please spread the word. We have some amazing resources in this
state and should be setting a better example and acting as a moral compass for
Remind me again of why we have an obligation to accept other states' most
"The performance audit recommends state regulators go beyond the so-called
traditional honor system of the industry self-reporting."We use
the "HONOR SYSTEM" with deadly radioactive material mixed with corporate
greed? The honor box of candy guy went broke in Utah."Waddoups noted that be believes EnergySolutions is a "good corporate
citizen," and it is the division that has fallen down on its job, adding
that the division has a "responsibility to do better and do more...."If they are good corporate citizens mike, then the regulators have
nothing to do, right? My guess is the inspectors have been warned against
interfering with these "good corporate citizens."Gov.
Herbert has nominated Dan Shrum, an EnergySolutions senior vice president as a
new member of the Radiation Control Board.– the previous board was
disbanded earlier this year. But Mike Lee fought for Energy Solutions
to bring in hotter waist, working for Utah?
Corporations are for profit not for what is good for you or me. They need
oversight, especially when dealing with these dangerous waste products. I am
sure the majority of Utahns do not want this waste disposed of in our
state....so, if that is the case, why did our government allow it? Aren't
our elected officials supposed to represent us? We all know what happened;
special interest lobby groups voice was louder than ours. For you who want less
government and oversight, this is a good example of why, in some cases, it is
essential. Corporations cannot be trusted to act in the best interest of the
community. We trusted Wall Street and look where that got us. The most important
role of government is to protect its citizens.
This is only one place in Tooele county that probably has their own
self-reporting as the Federal EPA has given so many businesses that opportunity.
The other places, such as the Army's Deseret Chemical Depot and the URS
company had the same self-reporting during it's destruction phase of
chemical weapons. The waste handling of all of the various places and other
chemical plants in Tooele county are probably similar. Tooele county is large
and very few people to complain as all those places provide jobs for people from
that county and Salt Lake, Davis, Utah and Weber counties. There is a reason
those companies go to that county to do waste type operations. There is not
very much moisture, winter and summer to worry about and the wind normally blows
toward Salt Lake and the easterly direction. The prior owner of Energy
Solutions didn't like oversight from any government agency either and would
fight any violation that was alleged or proposed with radiation mentioned in the
violation. They want a free rein in Tooele county and have influence
with state and county elected officials.
As a "good" Republican, I thought it was a no brainer to vote for
Herbert this time. I am starting to have 2nd thoughts. How can we have an
"honor system" when accepting nuclear waste? I always thought the group
HEAL was a bunch of whack-jobs and tree huggers. I might have to start
listening to them. Along with the DABC debacle and the I-15 Core project
fiasco, it may just be time for new management. Can't believe I am saying
this, but I just might vote for Cooke this November.
I am confused, aren't republicans for less regulation? Isn't to much
government interference the problem today? I get more confused every time I
flip on the tv I hear Mitt Romney and other republicans calling for government
to quit regulating, and get out of the way. It looks to me like that is what is
going on here. Government is not over regulating and getting out of the way.
So state government regulation is good and federal government
regulation is bad? Regulation of nuclear waste disposal is good, but regulation
of Wall Street is bad? Government should have oversight of nuclear disposal,
but not banking? I know regulation that republicans want is good, and
regulation that democrats want is bad. This is just so confusing.
