Did anyone catch the play where Kruger got booted? ESPN2 didn't replay it. Scott Hoculi went to the same refereeing school as his dad. How could they make that call on Murphy at the end (for a pick?) when the ball wasn't even in the air yet?

So much for the "best defense in the country", the BCS, and the conference of champions. yoU looked like WAC wannabees, or maybe one notch above East High.

Finally we know why the Utes want to schedule more out of state games and forgo the rivalry games with BYU and Utah St. Too much competition here. Anderson completely outcoached Whit tonight and after next week these same Utes will be no better than the 3rd best team in the state. I wonder if USC will blow past 60 pts when they visit?

Once again, the Utes play down to their competition, but I can hear Ute Fan now, "it's ok, at least we can still play for the Rose Bowl!"

Sorry Ute fan, tonight's loss IS a big deal, and after tonight, there is no way you beat enough Pac10 teams to even sniff the Rose Bowl. USC (and several other teams will roll U this year...but I'm sure that you have several excuses ready!

If the Utes make it to the Rose Bowl, I will never post on a Utah article again.

Get ready for the little children with their hah hah hah you guys lost posts.

This game was not meant to be. I feel sorry for Jordan Wynn as he is a good kid and solid citizen. Even before he went down, it was apparent his arm still lacked the zip it had his freshman year. I's to bad, but I think Utah should have started the year with Hays and given him the reps in fall camp.

The things Utah could struggle all year with. An pathetic offensive line. A first year offensive coordinator. Game planning for Hays. And now an injured Eric Rowe at safety with Blechen out.

As optimistic as many were about this year, my fears were confirmed here tonight. The defense is solid, but the offense has no punch. I look for a winning team, but it's obvious their will be no PAC 12 title hopes. So losing to USU with BYU looking to be tough has the season already a downer if Utah loses next week. Sure I will show up and cheer and look for some big wins, but a mediocre bowl game is the reality.

First and foremost congrats to the Aggies. They came out with a game plan and beat us on BOTH sides of the ball. The are the better team.

As far as Utah, that was absolutely embarrassing. Really, 49 yards in a half?

Wynn was just horrible, when you get outplayed by a D2 QB you need to quit.

With Hays we're looking at a 8-4 season, assuming White is healthy. So might as well let
    the Bulldog start.

Lets hope we come out with a better game plan against BYU else we'll be 1-2 by the time PAC-12 play starts.

Sorry folks, but this year... Wait! I'm not sorry. The reality of life in Utah in 2012 is that not one team from Logan to Cedar City will beat BYU on the grid iron. There will be no seven turnovers. There is a qb controversy on the north east bench of SLC and it is in provo that both the Wildcats and the Aggies play 'us'. We will win those two games for sure. Tomorrow will prove us 1-0 in state... 2-0 overall and then, we will come up there to SLC and kick the Utes into the deepest depression they have been in since 2003. 0-2 against Utah state teams will hurt like no fire ever scorching the Ute family. And... If I am right about this Romney will win in November!

  • gdog3finally West Jordan, Utah
    Sept. 7, 2012 10:25 p.m.

Gary Anderson did more with less, and outcoached Kyle. Utah had a poor showing even if they would have won. Still, bad breaks and calls went against Utah. Overall, I think the officials did a okay job, but Utah was getting blatantly held a ton, with an obvious hold on Keaton's run to the one yard line in overtime.

Special teams is AGAIN a weakness at Utah. One could argue the blocked punt cost Utah the game. Either way it was costly. Making a 52 yard FG is a tall order, but can you say two ugly kicks attempted for the win. Also, another field goal was skibbed through with an flubbed extra point made.

It was costly for Utah that USU had three fumbles that they got lucky bounces to cover their blunder. Utah forced Keaton to fumble and couldn't recover. Then we had another forced fumble and fumbled punt that worked out in the favor of USU.

The call on Jake Murphy in overtime was a tough call to make. That eliminated an extra point try for double overtime.

Utah will struggle all year. White IV needs blocks (holes) with no Bergstrom and Cullen.

I wish BYU fans would quit bashing teams in the USU, Utah game... You'll get your shot at both teams in the next few weeks you'll get a shot at both teams... Talk if you actually win. You aren't the best in the state as of right now, until you prove it against Utah and USU. I personally think that right now there are three evenly matched teams in Utah... BYU hasn't won any state number 1 slot yet... Actually Utah State is the only team that has beaten teams from Utah... Wait 4 weeks and we will see the USU vs BYU football game... And don't overlook the Utes next week...

First year O-coordinators are tough. Just ask Doman at BYU. Utah's offense was pretty anemic all night and the defense wasn't what we thought it would be. But I was extremely impressed with the Coaching from USU. The Aggies played solidly to their strengths and away from Utah's strengths. That game plan is what won it for them in the end. Well played USU.

Utah deserved to be humbled tonight. I've been listening to Utah fans and talk radio all week long talking as if Utah had already won the game. I could hardly stomach the arrogance from the ute fans. Ever since they made the Pac 12, ute fans have been acting is if they are better than every other team in the state and every other team in the pac 12. The bottom line is that even the PAC 12 has cellar dwellers and just like last year, Utah will assume the same position in the middle to bottom of the pack. I just wonder what the utes will say after they get beat by the cougars next week. GO AGGIES!

    Chris,

I have no problem with Utah being the second best team in the state.

They just have to prove it on the field.

Not looking too good as it stands right now.

Right now they have a losing record against the WAC, while BYU has a winning record against the PAC.

The news gets around a little slowly in Logan. Seems the USU players had not heard about Utah going to the PAC. No one told them that Utah has a really tough defensive line...maybe the best in the PAC. Of course the top QB prospect in Utah never got the word on this either so he is going elsewhere. I guess this is because Utah does not have its own TV network and must depend on the PAC to get the word out. Congratulations to USU. When you come to Provo in a few weeks you will have a chance to learn some things you might have been missing.

Ute fans should be happy with Hayes and Wilson in. Once Wynn got hurt, they actually started moving the ball. Wynn's arm strength makes Riley look more like Elway, which is pretty sad. • gdog3finally West Jordan, Utah
    Sept. 7, 2012 10:43 p.m.

Props to Utah State. Still, they are not better than Utah. BYU looks like they are better though. Utah rolled with Wynn and he's unfortunately not the same player he was his freshman year. It's too bad for Wynn, but him holding a starting spot on the team has set Utah back for the last two years. Reps were needed elsewhere.

Without the blocked punt TD, the offensive pass interference on Murphy in overtime, and three USU fumbles being recovered on their own blunders, Utah probably wins. The game takes shape from these things but excuses are hypotheticals. But if 54-10 was a fluke, an overtime loss where nothing goes your way is noteworthy. Don't forget USU holding Utah time and time again (few calls). That was especially true on Keaton's scramble to the one yard line in overtime, followed by Murphy getting the call against him on Utah's TD called back.

Key play of the game, 9 and 1/2 minutes to go in the game (tied at 13), Williams makes a 33 yard run with Kruger getting held. Sets up first and goal. Rowe pulled a hamstring and Kruger got ejected.

This game is going to be talked about for a long time, starting tonight. Get used to it Utes, you really set yourselves up for this wave of abuse. A new OC's inexperience, the wrong QB, 'undisciplined' players (yeah, loved that ejection call), and so forth.

Wow Utes, nothing 'stellar' exhibited tonight against a real football team, as many cautioned, myself included. I'm all ears for the excuses.

I just love how this sets up the next few BYU games quite well. I believe BYU has a good chance of sweeping the both of you, but if not that's ok, anything can happen on any given night in rivalry football.

Sorry about Wynn but is anyone surprised here? Sorry kid, your O line, as predicted, didn't show up. Time to reevaluate what's important in your life, the "fans" are now going to abandon you.

A very enjoyable game to watch and finally the Aggies play one through to the end.

    gdog -

Were you watching the same game I was? Utah's defense was in a slant... There was nobody close until they finally caught up at the one... All that can be said was that it was that Keeton was a great playmaker in the game and this play... The refs did a great job even though I felt they missed some late hits and unsportsmanlike conduct of the U. Everyone sees things... For example Utah State fumble at the beginning of the 2nd half... From my view there wasn't obvious evidence that he dropped the ball before hitting the ground... That's why Im not the ref... Aggies just outplayed Utah in a very sloppy game.

Pretty sad to blame the refs in a great game like this... Utah got lucky too... Dropped 2 kickoffs... USU nearly intercepted 2 balls in the fourth quarter... And the refs called the fouls well... utah "fans" have been the ones saying that utah will blow out BYU for a good year now. I'm not sure what you saw tonight that might have given you any reason to believe that is going to actually happen but utah "fans" are not noted for their reality based thought process.

Let me tell you what just happened and it wasn't all USU.

Terrible o-line. I've been telling you guys this for months. It's true. Face it.

Terrible qb's. Once again I've been telling you this for months. When jon hayes is your best qb you truly have the worst qb situation in the nation.

wr's that have done absolutely nothing, "best in the pac12" was a joke when it was claimed.

The defense is good, that is all, they are good. They are not "great".

LB's are incredibly average. Once again you've been told over and over.

whittingham seems to have bought into the embarrassing hero worship utah "fans" have heaped on him.

It's sad when a couple of poor calls effect the outcome of the game. The Utes got hommered, but should never have gotten them selves in that position. Brian Johnson called a horrible game. Every, and I mean every, time the freshman QB comes in they run the ball. Hello! Can the kid throw? Do you want the drive to stall. Whittingham and Johnson need to figure this out. The Defense is solid!

Congratulations to USU on the win. It makes me a little nervous about the game coming up in a few weeks. I suppose I can be a little relieved that it will be in Provo rather than Logan.

As for next week, this loss may be bad news for BYU. It could get Utah that much more fired up for the rivalry game, not that they have ever needed the motivation. Let's just hope BYU doesn't turn the ball over a million times like they did last season.

Finally, I will say I'm not totally shocked about the loss. The offense wasn't very impressive in beating a very weak FCS team. Yes, they could have just been working out the kinks. However, I think this game shows that the offensive worries are very real for Utah.

I just hope they don't get them figured out over the next week.

I really don't get the trolls on this one. There is no shame in losing to a team that has clearly been improving since Coach Anderson took over. That Defense will rock the house in Provo and I loved the guy that said Utah state owned Utah. Look at the record. The Utes have decimated Utah State for years. I just hope Coach A decides to spend a long time in Logan. He is doing a great job. I predict they will go unbeaten this year now.Utah State by 17 in Provo.

If Utah scores more than 14 against BYU next week, it will be a major let down for the Cougs. Even if we win they game, it would be dissapointing to give up that many points to them after what I saw from the utes offense. Like I said earlier, even with Hayes in (Utah now has a better chance)I find it hard to see Utah finding the end zone. BYU's offense wasn't much better in the 2nd half against WSU, so it might be a 10-3 or 6-0 game next week. I am just saying this so I don't seem to cocky or confident about the outcome next week. Makes me a little more worried to play USU conference weekend, Chuckie might be best QB in the state. I do love rileys leadership, though. Go Cougs!!

How cool would it be if USU beats Wisconsin next week and BYU can take care of Utah and BSU (no offense weber or Hawaii fans) to have a top 25 battle royal come 1st of October. I thought it might have been in SLC, but obviously that is not going to happen, so we might as well have one in Provo! Poor Pac 2.10, USC and Oregon well have hard time impressing anybody with the weak conference they are in. SJSU almost beats stanford, USU beats Utah. We are talking the WAC with Texas St. and UTSA as members. (Texas St. did crush Houston, I'll give them props for that)Pac 2.10 already has slipped as a B-Ball power, now they are slipping in FBS power. USC and Oregon might want to have what's left of the WAC join the PAC 2.10 to add strength to the conference.

I think there are several people missing the boat here on the comments. Clearly USU is a MUCH better team than people were giving them credit for. They more or less were able to entirely shut down the Ute offense the entire first half of the game.

The point is this, Utah is still a great team having just come off a 40-0 win. No offense, but I think it might just be that the Aggies are (yes) THAT good. Keeton is a a serious baller and that USU team is WELL coached and HIGHLY athletic in pretty much every position.

If I were a Coug fan, I wouldn't be so hasty to assume that just because the U lost a hard fought game in Logan means that next week will be easy for them. My prediction is that we are going to have yet another close rivalry game next week, and then again conference weekend.

I always love the comments people make about if we didn't have that punt blocked, or if they didn't call that offensive pass interference we would have won the game. You can pick a handful of plays in EVERY football game erase them and get a different result. Unfortunately that is not how it works. We played the game we played and lost. Deal with it. This was not luck or an aberration. Utah State probably won the battle at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and they were in control of the game. Let's congratulate them and move on. Because USU barely won in OT at home? Winning once in 15 years vs BYU and Utah does not mean this is now a huge rivalry and it's returned. USU with its best team in years couldn't even get more than 7 wins last year and didn't win the WAC, which was the worst conference last year. Let's wait until USU consistently beats these teams, then it's a rivalry.

    Some reality

utah is not as good as utah "fans" have proclaimed. usu is better than most people thought. The ref's did not "homer" the ute's. The utah coaches have done an embarrassingly poor job of recruiting at the qb position for several years and it is hurting them badly, last year and this year. You can't just ignore the single most important position on a football team and expect it to not hurt you.

I still expect a very tight game at res next week, the utah team has a lot of pride, they just lack talent at some very key positions. But playing BYU is a bowl game for utah, despite the attempts to claim otherwise from utah "fans". They get themselves sky high for that game so I expect them to be wound up and ready to go. I just don't know if the major lack of talent on offense is going to doom them once again.

In all honesty, I hate to see a classy guy like Wynn go down, but y'all are in a better position I think with Hayes. BJ will learn, so don't give up on him. You lost a close game to a team that we in Cache Valley knew was going to be good all along.

BYU has not beaten anyone of any consequence yet, and believe me, we are coming for you. The Aggies have been down for a lot of years, and have a lot to prove. We will be out for blood.

I learned this week that USU's better than what I thought, BYU's as good as I thought, and Utah's about as average as I thought.

Everyone talks about Utah's defense holding UNC scoreless. Last year, an FCS team (Sacramento St.) held UNC scoreless and to 72 yards (!) of offense. There were also 5 FCS teams that scored more points on UNC than the 34 offensive points the Utes were able to score against them.

Jordan Wynn is an average QB. His arm looks about the same as last year. The INT he threw was a horribly thrown ball. The Utah O-Line also has some question marks. The Ute offense was ranked 107th last year, and I didn't see anything to suggest that would improve markedly this year.

Utah's defensive line is fantastic! Verdict is still out on LB's and secondary.

All in all, not too impressed by the Utes in the opener. I think USU will give them all they can handle this week, if not beat the Utes. I will be surprised if the Ute offense scores more than 21 points.

Not to toot my own horn, but the previous comment was one I made 4 days ago on the article titled "What We Learned from Week 1".

I don't know why there was so much hype around Utah this year. Their offense was horrible last year and the only thing that changed this year was replacing Norm Chow with a 25 year old offensive coordinator.

So it shouldn't be a surprise for their struggles out of the gate. Having said that, I respect K Whitt and have no doubts that he'll be able to turn the team around and get to a bowl game.

However, I have predicted since the beginning of the season that BYU beats Utah by 14+ this year, and I'm sticking by that prediction. I think there is also a serious chance that Utah goes 1-4 to start the season.

I feel really bad about Jordan Wynn. Hope he's ok, the poor guy can't catch a break! He's worked so hard to rehab and get ready for the season. I wish him all the best.

This illustrates why Utahs' AD and Kyle are not willing to schedule football teams like BYU or any other decent teams. If they play teams like Northern Colorado they can win but if they lose to pac 10.2 team in there conference they can hide under “it’s a BCS team. Utah, Boise State, Utah and teams like BYU have had respect around the football Country for their willingness to play anyone. Those days are past for Utah now. it’s ironic that Utah's complaint against BYU in the past was BYU has a big head and they are arrogant. Now Utah is so arrogant that they either feel they are too good to play BYU or BYU is too good of a team to play during their pac 10.2 schedule. So Utah is either to full of themselves to a degree that far ever exceeds BYU's supposed arrogance (BYU never would have refused to play their rival) or they are COWARDS!!!. I believe it’s a bit of both at Utah. There is no disrespect in loosing if you give it your best effort but to refuse to play is arrogance and cowardice at its highest form

    @ Spokane Ute

The refs were actually fairly decent, and they were actually refs from the PAC. Also plenty of key calls went against the Aggies... This was a defensive battle. And USU won because of great plays. Like the blocked punt, the blocked FG. Your offensive line does suck, and that is why for the first half we were in your backfield all day, and why John White was fairly ineffective, but OUR defense was incredible.

Is this the same USU that Utah blocked from being in the WAC/MWC and refuses to play in Logan anymore? Replace the U on the Utes helmet with an H - as in Hypocrites.

Why did Utah play Northern Colorado last week, rather than Alabama, Michigan, USC, Florida or Ohio St? So much for that alleged respect for your program.

Utah is full of themselves if they think that are going to get anywhere as a bottom dweller in any conference. Arrogance leads to LOSING to teams like Colorado and Utah State, especially when you can't even beat 10-loss teams in November when it matters.

    Duckhunter,

I actually agree with everything in your post from 7:53 am, except for the part about BYU being Utah's bowl game. How do you figure when Utah has owned the Cougars in recent years, gone 9-1 in bowl games in the last 10 years including 2 BCS bowl wins. Maybe BYU was Utah's bowl game 15-20 years ago, but not now.

Give credit to the Aggies, they beat Utah on offense, defense, special teams and coaching. Kyle's teams have a knack for coming out flat in 2-3 games every year. They were good enough to overcome flat starts in 2008, but this team isn't that good. Urban's teams never came out flat... he always had them ready to play.

The PI call on Murphy was a good call. However, the USU defender did interfere with Christopher on the final play. But that's how the game goes sometimes. Utah recovered a fumble against BYU 2 years ago that was a poor call which helped the Utes win 17-16. Tough luck Utes, now put it behind you and play better next week. It will be a tight game... slight edge to BYU.

Hey,wait! Wasn't Utah supposed to be one of those elite BCS teams? Didn't they schedule Utah State only to pad their schedule with an easy early win? Shoulda spent more time on the practice field and less time reading their own press clippings.

    Night Owl,

You need to do some homework. Start by looking at BYU's November schedule for next year. It has been mentioned over and over that BYU's schedule would take a few years to be where they wanted it to be. Arrogance is making baseless accusations because you are blinded by hate.

And you are still 6-9 all time against San Jose St!
And 3-8-1 all time against Colorado!

A lot of folks eeem to be struggling with the truth. The pass interference call at the end of the game, change the entire out come. It was a horrible call. Anyone who denies that is looking at this through blue colored glsses;plain and simple.

    @spokane Ute

yeah but you cant use the same excuses byu fans ALWAYS use when they lose.. it's just not right and not fair. only they can use the refs as an excuse EVERY TIME they lose.

and yes that pass interference call changed the whole outcome of the game cause they easily could have called defensive pass interference the NEXT play as well. but its funny watchin these byu fans act like they have already beat utah. hahahaha thats the funniest thing to me.then you hae y fans telling u fans that they just "need to be quiet for now" hahaha you're the last fan base to be talkin to somebody about bein quiet, especially after that embarrassing loss last year in provo.

@Spokane, he pushed off and McKade Brady sold it well, and I doubt he truly flopped because that is a HUGE risk to take... Even K-Whitt didn't complain about the call. You then had 2 plays to get it in the endzone, and didn't. Our defense kept you to under 100 yards rushing... WAY more to you losing than 1 call.

@spokane and sports realist, talking about calls is pretty sad... It happens every game... There are calls that go both ways... Like the unsportsmanlike conduct that I could see from the 15th row the whole game... U of U players hit players away from the play after the whistle a lot, but only Kruger was called for his unsportsmanlike play... The refs did an incredible job, I was actually very impressed...

    @ VAGGie,

Yeah right, keep telling your self that. Your Ags got the win, but the officials had a majory say in what happened. The beauty of it is, if we run the table, or even lose 1 or more 2 games, we can still play in a BCS bowl. How does that work with the Aggies, or BYU? Just askin.......

As the announcers said, it may not be called much, but the pass interference was a legitimate call. The most clueless part of your argument, however, is pulling the "homered" card when the refs were PAC 12 refs.

Calm planning is filling BYU's schedule with teams like Texas, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Boise State, West Virginia, and Georgia Tech, and maybe even Utah, if the Utes have the guts to continue scheduling their natural rivals.

Your desperate whining about BYU's short-term need to fill its schedule with a few WAC teams during its first 2 years as an Independent is quickly running out of steam.

What I'm worried about is this next weeks game against Wisconsin. I was hoping they would win this last Saturday and keep their lofty ranking (which would have kept BYU out). Maybe they would have been looking past us a bit, and it would have been an "easier" game with them. I still think we can win, but we're going to have to bring our "A" game. GO AGGIES!!

First off I am and always will be a Ute. Utah fans stop with the excuse, we were not very good Friday night we are going to have to be so much better to do what we all want our Utes to do. Officiating never results in a loss, and for those of you Ute or cougar who think so have never had a jock strap on. It isn't a tie goes to the runner, you are either out or safe (Period).

Good job to the Aggies and very honestly I wouldn't want to be a cougar this week. Kyle will have this team ready, it's at our place, byu is a very good team that is going to see another very good team on the field Saturday.

Utah fans stop the denial, byu fans your team had not one thing to do with USU winning. I can't wait for Saturday its's sad that this will be the last time until 2016 but after being on this rag for the past year or so it's time for us to go our seperate ways for a while.
