Will you meanies leave poor Mitt alone! Just because he got a $77,000.00 tax
CREDIT for his olympic horse Rafalca you shouldn't keep pestering him to
release his tax records. This is just one more example of the vile, nasty,
liberals using CLASS WARFARE to put do Mr. Romney. It is no one's business
how many countries Mitt has used to shelter his mega-millions, and so what if
there are years that he didn't pay ANY income tax, my Aunt Gladys
didn't pay a cent in taxes for year. (of course she was in a wheel
chair)I strongly urge Mitt to stay the course, and continue to
withhold his federal tax returns!
Romney is the one who needs to put up. If Romney has nothing to hide then he
needs to show his tax returns and prove his point. The more the world sees of
Romney the more difficult it becomes to trust or believe him. His whole approach
of trying to defend himself by crying who told on me is shameful. Romney is
looking more and more like Nixon with each passing day. He should get out while
he can and save himself and his church from embarrasement.
liberal larry, sergio, guilty until proven innocent? that's not a
concept we accept in the US.What if I were to accuse harry of
cheating on his wife? would he need to disprove that, or would the burden of
proof be on me, the accuser?what other types of groundless
accusations would partisan harry and the chicago cabal come up with next? give
in to one baseless demand and that opens the door to even more baseless demands.
Go ahead mitt show Harry he is wrong. A picture (his tax returns) are better
than a thousand words.
The tax returns i'd like to see are Harry Reid's, that's where
the real story is!
Once again...Why are we overly concerned about what Romney does with
HIS millions and not concerned about what Obama is doing with OUR Trillions.Reid is pathetic. Obama is pathetic. Politics are pathetic.
Who said that releasing only two years worth of tax returns was enough? What
law says that? I don't think there is any law that says you have to
release anything at all (and allow the voters to draw an inference). But
realizing how important it is, even Romney's dad released 12 years. Remember, when Romney ran for Massachusetts governor the MA state tax
returns showed that he woefully underpaid both his Massachusetts taxes (since he
was claiming to be a resident in order to run) and his Utah property taxes,
since he was claiming the manse as his primary residence. He had to pay back
both in order to run.Romney has a proven history of tax obfuscation
and avoidance, in this case his own actions justifiably lead one to think the
worst until something otherwise is (easily) proven.
@lost in DCReid never accused Romney of doing anything illegal, merely
asserting that the wealthy have creative ways (that are legal) to reduce their
personal tax burden. At the same time Romney himself is also not showing
evidence to back up his assertions that he "paid a lot of taxes".
Lost in DC,Bad example, Harry can't prove he is not cheating on
his wife, but Mitt can release his tax returns and prove he is paying taxes.
There is no legal obligation for Mitt to release 10 years of returns, but with
this firestorm, wouldn't it be to his benefit to release them? The
democrats and Mr. Reid would look really bad in this situation, unless there is
something that he doesn't want America to see.Whether you like
it or not, this is not going away until Mr. Romney releases his taxes, and yes
in politics you are often guilty until proven innocent, and sometimes even when
proven innocent (a certain Hawaii birth certificate) you are still guilty.
The Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Breitbart Crowd (triumphant) is making much-ado
about nothing. For more than 4 years, the GOP Media Conglomerate has been
overtly suggesting Terrorist First Bumps, Kenyan Birth, Stalinist Plots for our
Children enrolling in Obama's child Army, and our Pres havning the Worst
Harvard Grades ever - All of which are unsubstantiated, tacitly racist, and
devoid of any rationale thought. So while the Tea Party-led
Republicans basks in the filth of politics - wallowing in the muck and the mire,
God Forbid should Harry Reid decide to step in the cesspool for a bit using the
same corrupted Orwellian-style, fallacious logic the Tea Party-led GOP has been
using against the Dems for YEARS!!!Yes, Harry's claims are
baseless conjecture, but politicos have to admit that it's fun to watch the
Right throw a collective hissyfit over it. Not buy the Selective Outrage, bro.
lost in DCWhy shouldn't Romney be open and totally honest and
then he would not need to worry about the Chicago cabal or anyone elese
demanding disclosure. Romney is running for POTUS, how he has paid his fair
share of taxes, or dodged it, is not baseless, it is germane to his fitness to
represent all the American citizens who pay a honest tax. Most of us have to
show our IRS returnes just to buy a house or get a business loan. Romney should
have to show his IRS returns as candidate for president. We need to stand up for
what is right and honest on all sides. Romney needs to release all his tax
returns and be done with it.
Lets cut past the horrible rhetoric of the current democratic majority leader,
the president, and other long standing members of congress that have recently
run against Mitt Romney. Ready? Has the I.R.S found Mitt Romney Guilty of tax
fraud? This is the only important question. If he is guilty...well pay up. If
not and we are angry that he has had significant tax benefits I believe the
people to get angry at are the people that have been in office that have been in
a situation where they could change the tax code-not Mitt (he only followed the
law, which last I checked was legal in this country). So Mr. Reid. Has or has
not Mitt Romney committed fraud? If he hasn't the blame is on you and the
rest of your colleagues that have held long standing political offices. My bet
is that he has done his taxes according to the law, And you Mr. Reid are running
a rumor to destroy a man's honor that you totally aware is false.
Who's the dishonest one now?
Joey-DEXCELLENT Point. Reid's net worth has skyrocketed in the
past few years. The rich are getting richer - especially those in D.C.Another point to make:There is tax EVASION and tax AVOIDANCE. Tax
evasion is illegal. Tax avoidance is perfectly legal. Why would you want to
pay more taxes than you have to? If you could avoid handing over your hard
earned personal property to the government... wouldn't you? Who is dumber? Somebody who pays too much taxes or somebody who pays too
Doesn't the IRS have access to his past tax returns? They audit past tax
returns all the time.
Hey, Anything that diverts attention from the real issues of a terribly managed
economy, lack of leadership and an eye-popping large increase in the deficit
with no accountability. Anything that can be used to set of a barrage of
baseless, dishonest personal attacks and to demonize Mr. Romney works for the
Romney keeps stating that he doesn't want to release his tax returns
because they will just become fodder for the Liberals and Democrats and will be
taken out of context and so on and so forth....Does he really think
releasing them is going to lead to more rumors and speculation than not
releasing them has? What could possibly be in them that can be used
against him or misrepresented more than not releasing them?He has
probably been audited by the IRS - especially after it was found when he was
running for Governor that he had underpaid. If he had done anything illegal, it
would have been caught and he would have been prosecuted. I firmly
believe that he has broken no laws and has not done anything that every other
rich person doesn't do.It has already been speculated that he
has paid no taxes for several years (all legal and above board) or that he
received more from Bain for a longer time period than he previously admitted to
(again, all legal). What could possibly be in his tax returns worse than those
speculations?Come on - seriously. Release the silly things already.
@I-am-I"Has the I.R.S found Mitt Romney Guilty of tax fraud? This is
the only important question. "Disagree. Exposure and public
awareness of the major ways to reduce tax burden that are perfectly legal raises
important questions about the tax code. Additionally, we can figure out what
sort of loopholes Romney is exploiting (his retirement fund for his kids is way
above what would normally be considered the legal limit without exploiting some
sort of presumably legal loophole). Also, we can figure out what sort of things
his money has been put to use with in those offshore accounts and what sort of
investments are made in the US. Romney says he has no control over a blind
trust. That's a lie. In Massachusetts when running for Governor he noted
that anyone can direct their blind trust to do or not do certain things.
If Romney disputes what Reid has said then release the tax returns and prove it
to the world. The fact that he's not releasing the tax returns gives
credence to Harry Reid.Personally, I believe Reid. If you've got
nothing to hide, you don't hide anything.
Where do I start...@Liberal Larry, Sergio...Not worth it.@louie - Romney should show his tax returns right after Obama shows a birth
certificate. More to follow on this one.@Glen in the Bronx - You say
Romney has a proven tax record of avoidance. It is tax code and there is no law
against having off shore accounts, if in fact he does have them. So where is
the proven record again.@atl134 - You know, you seem like a smart
guy. But, if Reid is so confident, then he should reveal his source. No reason
for Romney to release more tax records than necessary. I think everyone can see
here that this is only a ploy to get ROmney to release more returns. If it
wasn't then Harry could produce a source. There is no reason for him to be
secret about it, he is the accuser. The accuser goes first, the defense is
always last.@Fred44 - He didn't produce a birth certificate.
Hawaii produced a certificate of live birth, they are two different forms. I
can get a certificate of live birth from the state of Utah although I was born
sergio said:"Why shouldn't Romney be open and totally
honest ..... " - you mean like your boy Obama??There is a sucker
born every minute, isn't there?? Well, Mitt Romney isn't one. If you demand "transparency", then how about we start with
certain documents Obama has kept hidden from the American public??Romney is a rich man - you jealous liberals will have to deal with it. If he
wants to buy a horse (or anything else) with his own money, more power to
him. Here's the real news: 16 Trillion in debt, and
rising. 8.3% unemployment and rising. Obama needs to go now.
@UtahBruin: Firts, Turn off the "journalists" at FOX "News!"Romeny HAS a proven record of tax avoidance. He claimed to be a
RESIDENT of Utah for property tax purposes (thus getting the lower rate for the
manse); while claiming publicly he was a RESIDENT of Massachusetts to support
the ten year residency requirement to run for that state's governor, but
yet he was also was paying NON RESIDENT income tax rates to Massachusetts. You
cannot claim to be a resident and pay non resident taxes. In order to run for
Massachusetts governor he had to refile all his tax returns and pay the back tax
owed and the penalty to both Utah and Massachusetts. I am calling it
"avoidance" to be charitable...there is also another word you could use,
and that word is 'fraud."
First Obama tried to create the mythical "War on Women". That blew up
in their faces when they attacked Ann Romney. Then they tried to besmirch
Bain Capital as some kind of corporate raider. Even Bill Clinton said the Bain
has a sterling record. Then they tried to say that Romney did not save the
SLC Olympics. Salt Lake knows better. Now they are claiming the Romney is
a tax cheat with zero evidence. Anyone could make the kind of claims that Harry
Reid is making. In any court the burden of proof is on the accuser. Reid should
put up or shut up. In any other arena this would be called either slander or
libel.Obama has a long history of defeating opponents, Democrat or
Republican by getting his serigots to open sealed documents and then attacking,
merited or not.Romney should absolutely not disclose his tax records
and help Obama with his opposition research. Can you name one single
person who wants to pay more taxes than required by law?Anyone who pays
more than they absolutely have to, failed an IQ test.
@Ernest T. BassAgain, the prosecution always reveals his hand first,
in this case the accuser Reid. Then the defendant reveals their information
next. So in this case you say you believe Reid, and yet you haven't seen
his evidence. That's a pretty mindless assumption on your part.I am a Romney supporter, I think that is obvious. And I too wish that he
would just release them and dispell the rumors, but I don't know if he can,
I have had no evidence either. I think he is telling the truth about his taxes,
but I don't know. Reid on the other hand is accusing, so if you are going
to accuse, show your hand to force the other to show theirs. Reid is making
himself look stupid and childish. If he shows his source, his hand in other
words, then the childish part flips to Mitt if he with holds information. Kind
of like a previous comment of mine. Obama was and still is childish about his
birth certificate. We still haven't seen it, seen the long form, but not
the real thing. He is still being childish about it.
Who needs proof when you can just tell a lie and let the MSM go with it?
It's funny that Ried who has made millions as a Senator when they only make
140k or so per year. This is a desperate move that it makes him look even worse
than normal. Who in Nevada is voting for this guy. They can't find any
dirt on Romeny so they make it up. We should add the phrase Taxers to the
truthers and birther movements. Taxers people who say that Romney is a tax cheat
even though their is zero proof of it.
I think the real frustration for Romney is the ease with which Obama's team
is able, with their media allies, to turn every single challenge into charges of
pettiness, partisanship, kookiness, and even racism. From Reverend Wright to
Tony Rezko to his birth certificate to his drug years to his college marxist
leanings to his college transcripts to his horrible appointees to his crony
capitalism to Fast and Furious to his significant flip flops and gaffes, no one
dares challenge or vet Obama too deeply for fear of being labeled as kooks and
racists.Only in Romney's most fairytale dreams would every
challenge be similarly met with mockery and derision by the mainstream press as
happens every day with Obama.
We need to get trump in here to suss out those pesky tax returns.
@UtahBruin -- I challenge you to get a Utah certificate of live birth if you
were born in California. Please take a few minutes and order one and then get
back on here and tell us how it turns out.
@UtahBruin"if Reid is so confident, then he should reveal his source.
"Well that can be a bit complicated. Let's say for sake of
argument that Reid did hear this from someone who is part of Bain (regardless of
whether the claim made by said person is accurate or not). It's possible
that this person doesn't want to have their name disclosed because if it is
a Bain insider (I don't think he made it clear if it's a current or
former Bain member) then they could risk some sort of punishment from their
company for this. I understand that it'd be helpful if the source were
willing to go on the record but... I'm not so sure he/she wants that.
Looks like Harry Reid used one of the oldest political dirty tricks in the book:
Find (or make up) a nasty rumor, claim "someone" told you about it, say
you have no first hand knowledge "but if it's true....", then sit
back and watch it catch fire. Of course, if it's true it
isn't a dirty trick. But given the way this whole thing has rolled out
I'd bet my mortgage that Harry Reid has jumped into the pig trough.
Hey Harry,Almost six trillion dollars were added to the debt in the
past four years. That's more then enough to provide health coverage to all
our citizens. Instead of focusing on Romney's tax
returns,--find out what happened to that six trillion. While
you're at it, how about providing an audit of the stimulus package for us
to see.I can't remember, was it Romney who gave hundreds of
millions to Solyndra?
UtahBruin,A certificate of live birth lists the hospital and the
city you were born in. If you look at President Obama's Certificate of
Live Birth it lists the hospital and city in the state of Hawaii he was born in.
Which should have ended that discussionHowever that again is not my
point. This is not about President Obama, this is about Potential President
Romney. Since he is proposing further tax cuts for the wealthy, I think that it
is perfectly appropriate for Americans to want to see his tax returns. He has every right to choose not to produce those returns, and in doing so he
chooses to allow this controversy to continue. When you run for the highest
office of the land, your prior conduct is fair game. I didn't see the
republicans take then candidate Obama's word that he separated ties with
Reverend Wright and drop that attack. I know that probably means
that I engage in class warfare, since any discussion of the rich in their money
is inappropriate according to the republicans but oh well I believe in the First
I don't know where this "No More Mr. Nice Mitt" comes from. Romney
plays it rough and always has. Just ask Perry, Santorum, and Gingrich.I don't know if Romney has anything to hide. But he sure makes it look
like he has something to hide, the more stubborn he becomes about releasing his
taxes. He could clear this all up and make his critics look like fools. That is,
if he really has nothing to hide.
Romney needs to fire his entire political staff. His message is getting buried.
His most important message is the economy, jobs, and freedom away from
socialism. The problem is the democrats continue to play cards that
Romney and his staff seem to get stung every time. You want tax issues to go
away. Make your tax returns visible- no one cares. Legally he doesn't
need to show his taxes, but the quickest way to get this thing to disappear is
to play a higher card.Secondly, he needs to change the spotlight
onto Obama. There are so many issues he is not showing any passion for
(Socialism, growing government, higher taxes, no jobs, etc) Somehow his
advisors and teams have no clue how to get this into the press. If they
can't figure this out, this election is pretty much over.Playing defense is killing your campaign.
Harry's wealth came after his election, same as Hatch. Poor Harry, the
trap is set and he will not excape. See ya Harry,,,,, I will watch and
I could care less about his tax returns but the fact that Romney won't
release them so dogmatically leads you to believe he has something he wants to
hide. Why else wouldn't he just release them? Let's be logical folks
Harry Reid is lying or obtained information if released to him by a preparer or
the white house or the IRS is a felony act. If a Bain employee who may have
prepared Mitt's tax return, it would be a felony act. So for Reid to say
he received it from a reliable source, his source is a felon. That means his
source is a felon or is lying. The IRS cannot disclose tax
information, remember Hillary and cogot into some hot water attempting to access
republican tax returns.
Mitt is definitely hiding something in those tax returns. With as much
political flack as he is receiving for not releasing them, there is only one
logical conclusion. Mitt believes that the damage from releasing his returns
will be worse than the damage from not releasing them. And the damage from not
releasing them is great, given that Mitt is getting pressure from both the left
and right to do so. Between now and November, the amount of speculation and
pressure about Mitt's unreleased tax returns is only going to go up and up.
Again, what is in those returns must be pretty damning for Mitt to endure all
this just to keep them secret.
If Romney hadn't paid his taxes for 10 years, we would have heard about it
long before now. It is particularly unfortunate that Reid, as a fellow
Latter-day Saint, saw fit to make such an accusation. Isn't there
something in the scriptures about not bearing false witness?
Mitt Romney has provided the needed documents and certifications, etc to the
Federal election authorities, as needed or he would not have gotten this far.
Providing tax returns wouldn't end the firestorm, as the Chicago group
would request more and more documentation. President Obama didn't have a
strong opponent last time and the President didn't have to provide much of
anything except the Federal requirements as Hope and Change was riding the wave.
He was even able to drive Hillary from the competition with his community
action committees in every major city he visited. He is limited from using
those same groups as he did before but his Chicago group have their ways to move
those people during and after the DNC national convention. Senator Reid is not
squeaky perfect and is opening his door to become as Representative Pelosi, at
the end of his leadership, one way or another, inside or outside the Senate.
The Presidential process has so many requirements in the various stages that
there are only small things for an outside candidate to fear. Hopefully, in 90
plus days we will have a change of the Hope and Change President, with Mitt.
Harry Reid's wealth came after his election, same as O Hatch. Go figuer...
The trap is set on you Harry. This ought to be fun to watch. Political suicide
ala carte Harry....py
What's the worst that Romney's tax returns are likely to show? That he
availed himself of every possible tax shelter? Lot's of Americans do that.
If that's all it is, it doesn't make him look good but it doesn't
do irreparable damage to his campaign. But continuing to hold out ensures that
his taxes will be a nagging distraction in his run and hand the Obama team a lot
of material for attack ads right down to the election.Either Romney
is not getting good advice or he just refuses to listen. Not a good trait for a
merich39,Mitts tax returns are non of your business. Leave it to
the IRS.If you like hide and go seek, Obama has more to offer.
Mitt defenders say the only thing relevant is if Mitt broke any laws filing his
tax returns. If the IRS is satisfied Mitt's returns are accurate and
legal, then that is all that matters. What they mean is that to themselves,
that is all that matters. As a voter, I get to decide for myself what is
important to me. Mitt defenders don't get to tell me whether his tax
returns are important to me. In the voting booth, we're not trying to
debate Mitt's guilt or innocence. We're voting our trust in his
ability to be POTUS. I want to know how Mitt handles his finances and his view
of the tax obligations of the wealthy versus the middle class. If
Mitt doesn't want to release his tax returns, don't. It's my
choice as a voting middle-class American to decide if I believe he's hiding
something that would show he's unfit to represent me as a middle-class
American. For myself and likely hundreds of thousands of middle-class
Americans, Mitt's stonewalling only serves to heighten my suspicions.
Well, it would really be a blow to conservative politicking if Romney has been
complaining about taxes being too high and it turnes out he doesn't pay any
federal taxes. If you are going to base your politics on federal
taxes being too high, show me the damage.
@Craig Clark"What's the worst that Romney's tax returns are
likely to show? "The absolute worst would be if Romney took
advantage of a tax amnesty with his Swiss funds in 2009 to bring them onshore
since participating in such an amnesty disqualifies someone from becoming
president. I don't think that happened though. Worst that it can show that
is likely... if he paid single digit income taxes some years, possibly dropping
towards 0% a year or two, while investing in American failure through short
sales (in a manner similar to some of the big banks).
Even in a heated political campaign there is a line. Harry Reid stepped over it.
If he can't come up with something other than an unsubstantiated rumor, he
owns Mr. Romney an apology. Obama has hidden his college transcript
and thesis and yet he talks about transparency. It's there - we can see
right through him.
Romney has probably paid at a rate lower than the average middle income family.
I'll betcha that's why he won't release his returns. This could
get really fun.
UtahBruin: I absolutely believe Reid. Romney has no credibility until he stops
hiding whatever it is he's hiding. If Romney had in fact paid taxes
then the obvious response to Reid is to prove it.
worf...As a voter, I'll decide for myself whether Mitt's
tax returns are my business. Every single other voter gets to decide for
themselves as well. Legally, Mitt doesn't have to provide his
tax returns. Legally, every one of the past presidential candidates who did
provide their tax returns did not have to do so. But then legally, all of us
middle-class voters get to decide if Mitt's withholding of his tax returns
will affect our vote. There's not much you or other Mitt defenders can do
For Mitt supporters, even if you've already made up your minds that
you'll support him no matter what happens with his tax returns, aren't
you still just a little bit curious to find out what he's hiding? Come on
and admit that you are a little curious to find out even though you'd vote
for him no matter what.
The negativity from Obama and his allies has escalated to new heights. Romney is
supposed to release his tax returns when Obama has yet to release a long list of
items that make it difficult to understand his ideological background? And you
want more fodder for democrat attacks? What is good for the goose is good for
Of course there is no law requiring one to release their taxes, but its called
public perception and Romney is horrible at it. Either he is hiding something,
or doesn't want people to trust him. Until he comes forward, people will
assume that he paid no taxes. Mitt is no longer in the Business world and he
can't get by just because of his status. He can't just feel entitled
to the white house because people don't like Obama's record. Until he
learns that, he has no chance, no matter how bad Obama's record is.
Why does Romney keep falling for this? He's allowed Senator Reid to put him
into an untenable position. He insists that the rumor about not paying taxes is
untrue, but refuses to release his tax returns. He's being lured into
helping to spread the rumor. He makes it seem more credible every time he says
he won't release his tax returns like everyone else. Meanwhile
he's not talking about the only real issue that is in his favor - the
merich39,Why no heighten suspicions on Obama? Did he pay taxes on
the millions spent on vacations.Did he supply weapons to Mexican
cartels? Looks more like he's hiding something.
This is such a lucky day for Mitt to show us just how over taxed the rich are.
Come on Mitt, sell me on that 20% tax cut for the wealthy.
We pretty much know where Mitt got his millions. I'm interested in seeing
how Harry got his millions, albeit only a few. But hey, that's pretty good
for working in a government job. If Mitt had not filed taxes in 10 years the
IRS would be all over him, and Harry knows that. Both these guys make me sick.
Brown shirted thuggery is not healthy for America. Trying to make someone feel
guilty for crimes not committed is a tactic used by knee jerk, jack booted
nationalists. Mitt, don't EVER "show your papers" unless you are
summoned into court. That's your in-a-lien-able right as a human being. Say
no to jack booted American imbeciles.
You would think a Senator of Harry Reid's standing could acquire much
better political advice, about keeping his mouth shut. I don't think there
is a person in politics ANYWHERE, who looks more idiotic, obtuse, and completely
lame, then Harry Reid, whenever he has something to say! Not even Joe Biden is
this dumb, and at least we can laugh at old Joe. Watching Harry Reid is like
looking at the sun, it just hurts!
I have no doubt that Romney has an accountant and lawyer who make absolutely
sure his taxes are done properly and legally. I'm sure Romney has paid
every penny he legally owes. We know from the partial returns Romney released
that he paid roughly 15% in taxes, which is common for people whose income is
primarily from investments. And, it's perfectly legal. It's also possible that, for the 10 years claimed by Harry Reid, Romney -
legally - paid no taxes. How? Perhaps in that time Romney had no taxable
income, due to losses in his investments. And there's the
problem for Romney. Romney represents himself as the Messiah of the economy,
with all the answers to get America's economy on a roll again. However,
what does it say if his own personal investments have shown losses for 10 years,
allowing him to pay no income taxes? Is he really the genius businessman he
says he is?I think Romney has a conundrum. Either he paid taxes and
Harry Reid is wrong, or he legally paid no taxes because he had no income, or he
illegally dodged his tax responsibility.Which is it, Mitt?
"Bloomberg News - Barack Obama and his wife Michelle gave $10,772 of the
$1.2 million they earned from 2000 through 2004 to charities, or less than 1
percent, according to tax returns for those years released today by his
campaign." We already know that Romney gave more than 15% to
charity so you have to ask - would you rather give to a charity or the
government? Charitys typically give more than 90%of the money after expenses to
the cause - governments give less than 60% of the money collected. Honestly
there is not even a comparison about who has a moral leg to stand on. The funny thing is, the ones demanding Mit release more tax returns are the
ones that would not vote for him even if The Obama was sacraficing virgins in
the oval office.
Harry Reid just needs to shut up. He looks so bad at this point that it's
PP - I am not sure if you are just making up numbers, or your sources are highly
difference that what I am looking at. If you go to sites like Charity
Navigator that list all charities and the percentages, their numbrs don't
come close to what you are quoting To the Romney comment - we know
he gave 15% one year - only. We don't know anything about what he gave any
other year. But the Washington Post fact checked Huckabee's claimes ( his
is the one who claimed 1%) and this is what they reported."Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney meets Huckabee’s test.
His 2010 tax return shows that he contributed nearly $3 million to charitable
causes out of taxable income of $21.6 million. That’s 13.8 percent, just
about equal to Obama’s percentage in that year. (For more information, see
The Washington Post’s side-by-side comparison of the Obama, Romney and
Gingrich 2010 tax returns.)"The years before that, 2007-2009
,Obama averaged 25.1%.So please - we know what Obama contributed
back to 2001 (which was pathetic that year). We have no idea what Romney did.
The negativity from Obama. That's rich. The right still claims Obama is a
communist, stalinist, socialist, muslim, born in Kenya that is behind schedule
in taking away your guns. Should I mention the nasty email racists jokes sent
out of watermellons growing on the whitehouse lawn or the dog whistle "thug
from Chicago" remarks that bring up certain racist imagery? Reid
wants to see how Mitt handles money. Outraged I tell you,
I guess when you want to believe something it doesn't matter how much logic
and evidence goes against you. There was nothing illegal about Romney's
2010 return, but did that stop democrats from pouncing on it? Mocking him for
paying a lower tax rate? Obviously not. So why would anyone think that all
Romney needs to do is release 10 more years of returns and the democrats will
shut up? Obviously thy won't. So why on Earth would Romney want to provide
the returns? It's not about hiding illegal or suspicious activity,
it's about understanding that no matter what he does the democrats are
going to hammer him so why bother? I can't believe this is so difficult to
understand. But like I said, when you don't want to understand, you
We always ask why we don't have better people in leadership. THIS is why.
Harry Reid has made some incredibly serious charges against Mitt Romney. He is
accusing him of not paying taxes for TEN years. That is a crime. So, in a
nation where we all (supposedly) believe in due process, Mitt Romney is somehow
guilty because of hearsay from Harry Reid???As a U.S. Senator,
Reid's accusations are irresponsible. As an Elder in the LDS church, he is
bearing false witness. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate went up to
8.3% today and the Democrats only plan is to look for Mitt Romney's tax
returns for the past ten years. There isn't an Obama supporter who can
tell my why we should re-elect the president. You have nothing.
slpa-Nice attempt at a major reach, but Romney said he has paid
taxes every year. Try another unfounded speculation.
"...Romney said he has paid taxes every year...".Politicians
always tell the truth.
Ironic considering all Mr. Reid wants is for Mitt to put up or shut up.
"...it's about understanding that no matter what he does the
(Republicans) are going to hammer him so why bother?...".An
accurate description of 1/2009 to 8/2012... and counting. So,
it's ok to "hammer" a president, for whatever reason, yet not ok to
"hammer" a candidate, for whatever reason?
Romney's heart is in his wallet, he has no patriotism for serving his
country or paying taxes. He is all about money and himself, and he will do or
say whatever it takes to have money and power with little regard or compassion
for the middle class or labor who may get in his way. Romney is all about
Romney. It is time to drop him and nominate Senator McCain.
Half the people don't pay any federal income tax. Where's the fairness
in that? Romney pays millions. It's people like Romney who
keeps the country going, and the pathetic whiners fed. Shame on you.
@BarkforSarkI'm sorry you misread my post. I didn't
reach, and didn't speculate. I acknowledged that Romney has paid every
penny he is lawfully required to pay. I also acknowledged that he could have -
legally - paid no taxes if he had no taxable income.Romney claims
has has paid taxes every year. Reid claims Romney has not. Hmmmmm. Who to
believe?Romney has the ability to prove Reid wrong and deal a major
blow to the Democrats and the Obama campaign. Will he prove Reid
wrong? Can he?
Just love that Mr. Nice Guy is sticking it to the dems, the libs, the nasty
crowd, the sold-out journalists, the Kool Aid drinkers, the haters, the
Marxist/Communist/KKKers-et al. Too funny that only a few here "get"
his tactic. He's squeaky clean and he's not gonna let the junkyard
dogs boss him around. So stew away and go pick on our Border Patrol or the ICE
agents. And while you're busy deflecting,, Harry- How did all
your minions miss finding this juicy tidbit in '08?... This means Mitt is
smarter than all of your side, huh...I had no intention of voting
for the Mittster, now I'm campaigning for him just to light up my liberal
friends and let Mr. Mormon have the last laugh. Just wish Mitt were an
African-American minority female.FYI: The Bible is repleat with how
to treat non-believers, your enemies, your brethren, your neighbor. Harry just
doesn't feel complelled to obey God. What a novel concept for
politicians.I am just ashamed and angry that I voted for this
Chicago/novice politico. What a transparent man of honor he turned out to be.
You gotta know that the life long, elitist senator Reid keeps all his income in
Searchlight, NV where he grew up.
Where in the CONSTITUTION does it say a Presidential candidate has to release
their tax returns? Where? Nowhere. If he is smart enough to hire tax accountants
etc. that know how to use the tax laws as written to save money so be it. Quit
whining about his money. Most of you whiners probably made choices in life that
made it hard to go down the direction Mitt did. To my friend in St.George Utah
who voted for Obama last election but has said Obama has not done what he said,
why don't we ask Obama to put up, and I am not talking about tax returns.
Why is Romney even acknowledging this man Harry Reid? He's a notheing and
means nothing and merits no response. It is no ones business about filed taxes
and Reid is making accusation based on no facts as is everyone else. I'm
sure Harry Reid pays even less taxes than most americans himself.Reid is just a blowhard "front man" with strings attached to Obama and
Romney should addresses any comments to Obama so Reid can rest his weary brain
and go home. As for tax percentages paid by Romney at 19% is very
well taxed income when you consider that 80% of american pay less the 10% in
taxes and 47% of americans and 100% of foreign nationals pay no taxes at all.
Its all these free loaders not paying taxes that is the problem. Anyone paying a
tax at all is the ones to praise. So how is Obama paying taxes on a
phony ID and SSN? The IRS has notified Obama but we all know how that went,
ignore it and give the IRS 800 new jobs as tax collectors.Mister
hard core better get hard core and attack Obama with his own medicine.
Atl134,Please show me where I said harry accused Romney of anything
illegal. Nice spin and obfuscation. As for Romney not paying a lot
of taxes – he paid a lot more than me and I would suspect he paid a lot
more than you.Fred,Perfect example. Give in to a baseless
demand unnecessarily and more pop up. Just a smoke screen to obfuscate
BO’s incompetence.Sergio,Guilty until proven innocent?
Still??Ernest, SchwaSee comment to SergioGlen in
the Bronx,Turn off MSNBC and open YOUR mindUtah Bruin,Reid is making himself look childish and foolish – yup, but no more so
than usualAnd it appears harry is abetting a felon by releasing
information about tax returnsMerich39,It’s not so much
support for Mitt, it’s the absolute need to removed the current scourge
from the WH, and Mitt is the best alternativeMany liberals assert
the return would show Romney paid at a lower rate than middle class Americans.
This is a lie. Most middle class Americans pay NO income tax. How is 15% LESS
than 0? Only in dem math.
The preceding posts are an entertaining collection of attempted deflection and
misdirection, but I have yet to read a single cogent argument explaining why
less disclosure is better than more disclosure. If Mitt is paying
little or no taxes while calling for more tax breaks for the top 1% of earners,
that is relevant to me and will affect my view on the subject of tax breaks for
the wealthy. If Mitt is partnering in substantial offshore
investments with Saudi oil sheiks or other foreign investors with interests
opposed to U.S. interests, I believe he has (or will have) a conflict of
interest that many voters probably want to know about. If Mitt has
invested in the foreign companies directly competing with the U.S. companies
Bain was outsourcing U.S. jobs from (i.e., the companies replacing U.S. fired
workers), I want to know about it and I believe it is relevant to Mitt's
claims about supporting U.S. workers. To those who want to deflect and talk
about Reid or Obama or anything else, I say put up a reason why less disclosure
is better than more disclosure, or shut up.
Senator Reid is a statesman of courage in challenging Romney to show how much
tax he pays to support America. Paying taxes is a privilege the same as paying
tithing. It is the cost of civilization and all citizens should be proud to pay
their fair share. If Romney hasn't cheated the nation and the American
people then he shouldn't have any problem releasing his taxes for public
examination, the same as his father did and all the other presidential
"Half the people don't pay any federal income tax. Where's the
fairness in that? Romney pays millions."We will completely
ignore that a good portion of those are retired households. My mom (76) lives
off her social security check which totals less than $14,000 a year. She files
taxes, and doesn't own any federal on those funds. So what
percentage of those $14,000 would make the conservatives feel good about her not
being a free loader on the tax payers? We will ignore for the sake of argument
that she paid her part for over 45 years. What amount would make people like
MItt (or others here) not feel like she is being an undue burden. And
what percentage of people pay taxes has nothing to do with the lack of openness
from Romney. As we have seen in post about the ATK loss, most conservatives
(and liberals too) believe crony capitalism if far too big of a problem in US
politics. How Romney leverages his millions is very critical in these
discussions. Romney alone can stop this issue from casting a shadow on his
I salute Harry Reid, the most powerful LDS in politics. I have a friend in the
LDS ward in DC. She tells me about how Harry regularly attends church meetings
and is a very nice person. It's so refreshing to have an LDS member in the
public eye that represents the LDS faith so well and isn't caught changing
his positions like a person changes socks like Willard. Harry Reid
still has five more years as Democratic Senate Leader and will probably be at
least two more years of Senate Majority Leader while Willard will be trying out
for a show on Fox News in early November--you'll want to make sure and DVR
that--excitement she wrote!Keep fighting Harry!
Wildcat, harry represents the LDS faith so wellyou mean with
baseless accusations? I was not aware that represented the LDS faithpro-abortion votes? I was not aware that represented the LDS faithpro-gay-marriage votes? I'm pretty sure that does NOT represent the LDS
faith.I also have a friend in an LDS ward in the DC area. He says
harry insists in sitting on the stand wherever he goes and be recognized.
I've heard he is as arrogant as they come.
Harry, I used to respect and defend you. You are now embarrassing me.
I will have to agree that Mr Romney has probably paid all of the taxes that he
is legally required to pay. However, I would bet that the same
applies to GE.Why the double standard?
I love that the Democrats are trying to play the patriotism card in demanding
that 'the rich' pay more taxes. The real patriots started a war over
paying too much taxes to a distant capitol.
Show the returns!
@Utahbruin. no the state of Hawaii released a short form and the ong form was
also released. I have 4 birth certificates issued by Utah (short form) and all
are legal and show place of birth. Not one of them was born in Kenya,
surprisingly enough. We still haven't seen the rest of Romney's tax
returns and what we have seen is a lower tax rate than most Americans.
Ann Romney has admitted there is something to hide. On Good Morning America she
said "Because, there are so many things that will be open again for more
attacks and you just want us to give more material for more attacks,...” .
"I love that the Democrats are trying to play the patriotism card in
demanding that 'the rich' pay more taxes. The real patriots started a
war over paying too much taxes to a distant capitol."Yes, the
founding fathers started a war with England, and that was one of the reasons.
You do realize, though, that Whashington DC is not a distant
Capitol, it is the Capitol of this country, the country you and I live in. It is
@Lost in DCReid explained what his source said. It isn't
baseless. Romney can dish it out (did the same thing in the Governor's
race with his opponent's spouse), but can't take it.No
person is pro-abortion. I am sorry if everyone doesn't agree with the
point-of-view that Congress has in forcing the rape victim to bear the child.
Reid's stance on that is actually very in line with the LDS church
(abortion in cases of rape, incest, and health of the mother)I think
the LDS church is not against civil unions (state-recognized marriages). Reid
explained he didn't morally agree with gay marriage, but supported civil
union rights--no conflict there.Your friend is very mistaken. My
friend who belongs to the ward and attends the meetings says he sits in the
congregation and his protection service is out in the lobby. How
about your GOP votes on immigration? Does that reflect the church? How about
their Pharisee-style economics? Does that represent the church? NO!Harry is as good as a person you'll ever find. A great ambassador of the
LDS Faith!Keep fighting Harry!
@Lost in DCOh one more thing. You saying Reid is arrogant--LOL. He
is so soft spoken and friendly. Meanwhile, look at the National likeability
polls of Romney. Dick Cheney is about the only person with less likeability.
The whole world thinks Romney is arrogant.
Wow... almost 100 comments on this subject! It is clear this issue is not going
to die down or go away, and Mitt's strategy of secrecy is failing. A few days ago I asked the Mitt defenders to stop deflecting and give us
any reasons why less disclosure is better than more disclosure. The deflection
has continued and nobody has presented one reason why we should have less
disclosure (than we have had in the past) from our candidates.
Don't you just love the Right Wing rhetoric that blames Pres. Obama, Harry
Reid, and Nancy Pelosi for the failure of the Republican legislators to work
WITH Pres. Obama instead of voting AGAINST everything and every proposal made by
Pres. Obama?WHY is Mitt Romney afraid to let the American people
know why he does not trust banks within the United States?
