Is this a non issue or what?Does Utah not lead the nation in
volunteerism? Yes!Does Utah lead the nation in donations to
non-profits? Yes! beating out Oklahoma # 2.How can the Governor of
utah be failing at this if Utah is # 1.That is like saying the
manager of the New York Yankees Joe Girardi is failing because his team is only
20 games over 500 ! How does a Democrat win an election in Utah
against a successful Governor? Make Something Up!Sound familiar?
In my mind, to "volunteer" & do "service" in exchange for a
reduction of student loan debt isn't really "service". But as
Tevyev says in Fiddler on the Roof, "On the other hand" we say that
those in the military are serving their country & they do so, often in
exchange for a reduction of their student loans.I like Cooke's
thinking. I like that he is trying to find ways to help graduates be productive
& gain experience in a tough job market. I like how he is trying to help
graduates with their student loan debts. I like how he is reflecting back upon
our state's pioneer roots. I like that Cooke has served his country in the
military with distinction.Herbert has always left me feeling uneasy
about him. Don't know why, just an inward warning signal. He has
certainly benefitted from presiding over a well-run state. Utah has had good to
great governor's for decades regardless of their party. May I use this
forumn to encourage Utah voters to cast their vote for Cooke? That's where
my vote will go.
Perhaps the article wasn't sufficiently clear, but it appears that Mr.
Cooke wants students with high student loan debt to volunteer to work in
hospitals and other places to pay off their loans. But if they are
volunteering, how do they pay off their loans? And if they are working to pay
off their loans, who comes up with the money to pay them so they can pay off
their loans?Yes, Mr. Cooke needs to do more thinking about the
details of his new "volunteer" program.
It seems like a good idea, perhaps he can get off to a good start by asking the
2000 Stripling Mormon Warriors to be the first to volunteer.
Given all the shenanigans that have come have come from the governor's
office recently, we really do need a man like Peter Cooke to fill that office.
