By all means, vote for Romney. Never mind the fact that he is the original
architect of Obamneycare.
Let the sour grapes be mashed!
Governor Herbert is also under the belief that Healthcare is a Privledge and not
a Right! The Uninsured Emergency Room visits cost us more than requiring all
American's to pay for healthcare individually. We are already picking up
the tab without Uninsured chipping in for anything. At least this way, people
will be paying into the system that are not contributing now!
I am not thrilled with Obamacare, but history has shown us that the only time
the GOP mentions the need to fix healthcare is when the dems propose
something. They had many years of complete control and the only thing
they did was to push medicare part D.We have a problem with health
care costs. They are skyrocketing. What is the GOP's specific
plan? Waiting, waiting, waiting
As somebody who can't afford a $14,000 bill when I go to the emergency room
for four hours because I have been denied health insurance due to preexisting
conditions, I'd like to know exactly what Romney means by
"replace." If Republicans wanted something different in the health care
bill, why didn't they put something forth when the health bill was
written?? Or was having Obama fail more important at that time, so they could
pander to their health insurance special interests?I'm really
not getting it. The GOP wants to repeal the health care law, so we can keep the
status quo of countless uninsured Americans? If they don't like the health
care bill when it was written, why didn't they put forth other ideas? Or is
the GOP doubling down on the politics of stupid and special interests?I think I'll take the latter.
This is precisely why I'm an embarrassed Utahn. I don't think Mr.
Herbert has that "patriotic gene"! Oh well, it's a great day
Wow, my esteem of our governor just when down about 6 notches. With his remark
on communism he confirmed to me that he has been hanging out with the tea party
fools for too long. In our society we see Social Security, minimum
wage, medicare and medicaid, public schools, public roads, regulated utilities
such as natural gas and electricity to every home even in rural locations .. as
all fine and American. In fact these things are part of what make America great!
But oh mention medical coverage and insurance for all and now we are in the
realm of 'communism?!' Herbert, Utah is not a tea party
state, even though they are all you are hearing and mingling with. We want
compromise and balance between support for good regulated capitalism and valued
and important socialistic programs... just like we have lived with for 200
years. If other countries can figure this universal health care the USA can as
well! We MAY have to ask our MDs to somehow live on $400,000 per year as opposed
to $950,000 per year salaries however!
Who is it that Gov. Herbert thinks should not have healthcare? I hope it's
not me or one of my friends or family.
Oh, you get it technos. You hit it right on the head when you asked if it was
more important for Obama to fail than to provide healthcare for our citizens.
Politics have never been pretty, but they are now downright ugly. We need to
dump Herbert and his ilk.
Yeah, and Utahns have total control over the election. Brilliant.
The rationale behind the Supreme Courts justification makes me think of
unlearned men who don't have a clue as to what is going on.Yes,
we all need health care, but when I am told that I must have health care and if
I do not have it I will be penalized and that penalty money will buy that health
care. Personally, I think anyone who can afford it is nuts for not having it,
but the fact that the Democrats have rammed this down our throats is what is
appalling. They have literally become big brother and will determine what is
good for us. Soon they will decide which doctor I can go to, they will decide
what size house I should have and they will decide what type of car I can buy.
The founders of this country are turning over in their graves right
now. They are crying because our elected representatives have strayed from the
constitution and what is was intended to do.It is time we have a
constitutional amendment limiting the Supreme Court to 20 years and they are
then retired. This lunacy must stop.
Cougar Blue:You seem to understand more about what the constitution
prohibits than about what it permits.
Do people really think, considering the recent Supreme Court ruling, that
removing Barack Obama will result in the elimination of his signiature issue?
Even if conservative Republicans hold both the House and Senate, and if Romney
is president, Republicans will only get legislation passed if they have a
super-majority (60 votes) in the Senate! How do you think conservatives have
been so successful in making Obama's first term in office so difficult?Granted, the Affordable Care Act legislation upheld by the Supreme Court
requires some major changes, however, Republicans have absolutely no intention
of drafting any comparable reform package. Since most conservatives in places
of power have good healthcare already, there is no incentive on their part to
change things. However, as the Republican Party becomes more irrelevant in the
future, their abundant money will not be sufficient to buy the game.People will come to see the need for universal healthcare in this country as
both a vital and important benefit to the nation as a whole. Employers will
appreciate a healthy workforce and productivity (including the economy) should
grow proportionately because healthcare is no longer the spectre that stands
over the regular American's life.
What an odd comment Governor Herbert injected about communism. The
constitutional Affordable Care Act is not communism (nor is it socialism). When
our elected leaders are ignorant on the basic forms of government, it tells me
that we need to pour more money into education. Perhaps then we can salvage the
next generation of Utah leaders.
I too agree that we ALL need healthcare, but when a government TAXES the people
for not taking an action, then we are in trouble. Never before in history has
the government been able to levy a tax against the citizens for not doing
something they are told to do by the government. Taxes are levied
for products and services purchased, not for products and/or services NOT
purchased. So now our government has shown that it has the ability
to tax us if we don't do what they say. Does this mean that they can tax us
if we don't buy American cars? This is a whole new era in
government control. Yes everyone needs healthcare, but not at the
cost of government control over the rights of freedom.
Hey CougarBLue in Heber ... think this through ... a young man who has NO
insurance .. who doesn't want something 'rammed down his throat'
goes up the canyon to rock climb ... he falls and is badly injured ... he is
taken to emergency care and treated, he spends 6 months in critical care, he is
a parapalegic and will never walk again .... now, guess who pays for that now?!
YOU DO ! ... and I DO! through medicaid which he surely will be one soon since
in can't work, etc... and since he had no insurance. SO the point is
CougarBlue .... We DO end up paying for the 'nuts' that you mention
... why not make it a FAIR situation where the responsible ones are not just
paying for everything through higher taxes and higher premiums? Make the foolish
young rock climber pay something into the system to help cover his risk. And the founding fathers boo-hooo is just silliness. Live in this
Herbert is a buffon and people of this state eat his babble up. He's one
of the politicans that told us it would surely be struck down by the courts.
Wrong!! These same politicans also tell us that the only way to over turn it is
throught this Fall's election. The only way that happens is if they
control all three braches of goverment with enough knuckleheads to stop any
filibusters. That is unlikely. The law stands now and it will stand next year
as well. Why can't they go back to their more concrete ideals like
Intelligent Design or a Balanced Budget Amendment?
BYUalumSouth Jordan, UTIf you didn't have fire in the belly for
Mitt Romney and to also get a majority of Republicans in the House and Senate in
November, this is the chance you have as individuals to save this country.---------------Please, be rational. All I hear is repub blowing
off steam like the Gov. Let me spell it out for you...We will not be able to
repeal Obamacare in the next two years.Even if Mitt is elected, even
if the house and senate are run by republicans - the senate repub will not be 60
and the demos will filibuster any bill that takes any part of Obamacare away.Be serious and speak to us as intelligent beings, Gov. We really do
understand how our government works (or doesn't work.)
Never before in history has the government been able to levy a tax against the
citizens for not doing something they are told to do by the government. --------------Think of it like a tax (fee) for not wearing
your seatbelt. Yes, we have to pay if we do not do what they say, don't
I have never read so many comments in the Desert News that supported my way of
thinking. Obamacare is the law of the land OBEY IT. Romney won't do a thing
but inflame the far right. The big boys in the insurance companies will shut
Romney up and tell him how they are going to make money off of Obamacare. But
Romney will do what he is good at, complaining about Obama and never offering a
viable solution. And flip flopping his jaws.
How lazy, all states can opt out of Obamacare, all they have to do is design
their own plan that covers at least as many people and is no more expensive than
Obamacare. If Obamacare is so awful it shouldn't be hard to do better so
why not have a go at it Governor? You do want healthcare reform of some kind
right? You don't want us to just stick with the old unsustainable status
quo... right? So far only Vermont has gone this route, they passed
Our Realtor-in-Chief hasn't got a clue. The ACA automatically makes life
easier for everyone. It's about time the freeriders paid their fair share.
We needed to repeal the governor who took a $80,000 "contribution" in
return for a multi-billion dollar contract to redo I-15. Add the $13 million to
satisfy the contractor who won the first, honest bid. But many in this state
find it easier to vote for a crook than for someone from the opposite party. My
fellow native Chicagoans suffer from the same disease.
But when the government goes bankrupt we will be singing a different tune. How
many Trillions of dollars is the national debt now?
Benefits for Obama healthcare:* increased motivation for students
entering medical school. * more people paying their own medical
coverage will save me money.* provide more employment*
ensures lower taxes* like Canada and Europe,we'll have better
medical care* better care for the elderly* people who
has received free medical care, will now pay.Thank You Obama. For
caring of people, over your own political ambitions.
@BYUalum South Jordan, UTIt's interesting how diametrically
opposed we both are in how we see this issue? How do you reconcile this
considering how you think? You obviously would disagree with me (probably on
most thing, I surmise), but how would you propose to go forward knowing that?
Do you try to compromise, or do you just want to stand your ground? As it
stands now, there is obviously no middle ground. Do you like it that way?
Texas Republicans want to eliminate any cirriculum to develop critical thinking
skills in students. They want to keep young children from questioning their
parents' viewsd and values (i.e. they don't want these young people
growing up to think for themselves and find extreme conservative thinking to be
both irrational and illogical). Of course it's best to fault progressive
thinking since it runs counter to the "accepted" ideas of a conservative
community, but they don't want anyone saying that they may be wrong.According the them, if you grow up in a community where the accepted
wisdom is that the earth is flat, all living people are descended from a piece
of anatomy (Adam's rib) from which a woman was created, that certain
Americans are not truly Americans, and a free and unencumbered market will
vindicate Capitalism and everyone can be happy and rich, then it's
important to keep ideas to the contrary out of the discussion.Certainly, all recorded knowledge needs to be cleansed of radical ideas and
"facts" need to be changed to support the given order. Only when all our
children think alike and act alike, will these conservative elements feel safe.
Yes Obama has to go.. no question. The man is a cancer to democracy and freedom.
However - today the Supreme Court ruled a victory for Obama - like it or not. It
seems to me that America is really starting to distant itself from the
constitution and adopting the European model of socialism and big government. If
you want to blame someone for today's ruling blame George W Bush - he was
the one that elected a moderate Judge Roberts to the high court. If Romney does
win and he does get the chance to appoint supreme court justices he simply must
appoint conservatives - not moderates. Moderates morf into liberals as we saw
today. Roberts "created" a way to pass this law by seeing it as a tax -
something OBama said it wasn't. Roberts obviously wanted to make his mark
and legislate from the bench and so he did. In any event - America hangs in the
balance. 4 more years of OBama will turn America into Greece and then everyone -
liberals and conservatives and everyone in between - will feel the pain of
crushing taxes and 15-20% unemployment.
Some posts have asked where the Republicans were when the bill was passed, well
there were ideas put forth but the Demos had no intention of listening, they had
control and they were going to take advantage of it. It is a progressive law
and what are progressives but bigger government supporters. Frankly I am sick
and tired of the government mandating what I can and can't do. There are
better alternatives to Obamacare like tort reform and allowing insurance across
state lines etc but no one is interested in those because it takes away from the
loot the attorney's get from trying cases for malpractice. Bottom line
this is not an issue that is because the Democrats thought of it first, it is an
issue of freedom of choice. If we are mandated to have health insurance then we
have no choice and for the baffoons that don't have it now, do you think
they will have it the future or just pay the penalty and have the government
(you and me) take care of them anyways. You that support Obamacare are
seriously misguided in your belief that this will solve anything.
Few people realize it, but we really have two choices here--continue
"forward" over the cliff and become the next Greece, or go
"backward" about 40 years when everyone took personal responsibility for
their own care, held providers accountable for the costs and essentially
everyone could afford good health care.I comes down to
principles--it always has and always will. As Neal A. Maxwell said, "The
living of ONE principle of the gospel is better that a THOUSAND governmental
programs, which programs are, so often, like straightening deck chairs on the
Repeal Matheson as well. He voted for Obamacare in all the subcommittees he was
on. He only voted against it when it came to the house floor. I think his total
voting record for Obamacare was 29 for and 1 against.
Lane Meyer -- that "tax" is exactly what happens to you, if you decline
Medicare and want it later (when you get sick). Why should you get a free ride
on my considerable taxpayer dime, when you wouldn't take responsibility for
yourself?Mad Hatter -- a Senate "super-majority" is 61, not
60. It takes 61 votes to block the opposite party's fillibuster.
Is it time to impeach the Supreme Court?
Want to replace the current Utah Governer? Repeal and Replace Gary Herbert!
if you choose to buy a house and pay interest on your mortgage, you pay lower
taxes than a person of equal income who chooses not to buy a home. if you have
children you pay lower taxes than an income equal who chooses not to have
children. if you save for retirement you get tax breaks. if you buy energy-star
compliant appliances, or own a farm, or any of a number of other desirable
activities you can get a tax break. here's the new deal: IF YOU BUY HEALTH
INSURANCE YOU WILL PAY LOWER TAXES THAN A PERSON OF EQUAL INCOME WHO CHOOSES NOT
TO. The cost of health care and health insurance is too high. it
is economically crushing middle-income families. it's about time someone
did something. if the new law is imperfect, fix it. but for heaven's sake
please acknowledge that something needed to be done. Republicans didn't do
I didn't want to repeal obamacare. And this isn't changing any minds
in utah anyway.
re:JoeBlowThe GOP has proposed several times a 10 step health care
reform plan Joe. Some of the reform items include Tort Reform and Purchasing
Insurance Across State Lines. Tort reform alone will lower cost in a BIG way by
ridding ourselves of all the frivolous law suits. Allowing you to purchase
insurance anywhere in America is just old fashion competition and capitalism
which would also lower costs by introducing competition. Obamacare is 2700 pages
of tax tax and more tax coupled with regulations and mandates and all of this is
going to be a run-a-way train that hits small business owners head on in 2014.
Business owners just had their bottom line reduced in a BIG way which always
translates to layoffs , plant closures etc... The scary thing about all of this
is that the true cost of OBamacare is still growing - doubling in size from 3
years ago already. Greece is the poster child of what socialized entitlements do
to a country. It would be wonderful to give every one free healthcare but it
would also be great to give each one of your kids a brand new SUV ! Can't
Cougarblue,The SCOTUS was appointed and confirmed according to the
Constitution. They followed the processes outlined by the Constitution. They
ruled according to the Constitution.Anyone who disagrees with this
ruling is NOT a supporter of the Constitution of this country! You
have the Constitutional right to such an opinion, but don't lie and claim
to be patriotic when you do not support the Constitution.
I think Chief Justice Roberts got it right. We might not like the laws and
taxes, but it is within the right of government to enforce this. While Pres
Obama might try to say this isn't a tax, it is, and we all know it. It just
so happens that many people think it is a smart tax that makes the health care
system work better. Feel free to argue against that, but don't argue about
legality. You are not being taxed for doing nothing, think of it as
everyone is being taxed for health care, and if you get coverage, then you get a
tax credit (if not, no tax credit for you, because we know at some point you
will get sick or injured and we the people will foot the bill). It isn't
perfect, but I have lost all faith that the GOP can get anything better in
place. Romney should move forward in his campaign, not backwards...if he dwells
on this, he is going to lose big in November. Show vision, not criticism,
@patriotJust a minor correction: the SCOTUS did not rule a victory for
Obama - they ruled that the ACA was not unconstitutional and could go forward as
law. Agree 100% with your comments. If you have time, read the
court's opinions and tell me if Ginsburg's disprespectful and arrogant
language toward the the non-liberal Justices and their opinions, and the
latitude she takes in interpreting the Constitution doesn't scare you at
In America, government is not intended to be a care giver to the people. They
are meant to preserve our rights and freedoms to chose. As long as people
don't grow up and learn to care for themselves and their own, government
encroachment will continue to increase in our lives and take away our choices.
What normal kid wants to live with their parents their entire life? For those
who don't agree, take an extended trip to another country and send us a
post card telling us how wonderful life is for you. Oh, and make sure you send
a return address.
So this is a huge new tax increase by the man who promised taxes on families
making less that $200,000 would NEVER pay more in taxes. (I never believed that,
by the way.) To those in favor of this law, where do you think the money is
coming from to pay for this? The Supreme Court has awoken a
sleeping giant (the Tea Party) and filled it with terrible resolve. If you know
anyone who is still watching ESPN or The Bachelorette, go wake them up and get
them moving. It's time for a new midnight ride to wake the people.
Today, Obama lost all credibility. He lied to us. He told us that he
would not impose any new taxes on anyone making less that $250,000 a year. That was a lie.The Supreme Court caught him in that lie.
They told us that Obama's health care package was a TAX. Obama lied. He
was caught in that lie. The highest court in the country exposed him for what
he is - a liar.Utah's Governor has every right to speak out
against Obama. Obama has caused this State great misery. He has shut down our
oil fields. He has idled thousands of willing workers. He has kept the
treasury from receiving millions in revenue - so that America would suffer from
the lack of self-produced oil.Obama, today, was exposed for what he
is. If anyone can't see it, they are blind. Obama has been blaming Bush
for everything that has happened in America for the last 11-1/2 years. Today,
John Roberts shoved everything in Obama's face and reminded us that OUR
choice for President has nearly ruined America. Our Governor is
right. Obama must go.
Yes, we Americans voted in these corrupt leaders. Our first big
mistake, was allowing government to force our children out of their homes to be
raised, educated, and brainwashed, with their liberal philosophy. Any time
government controls education, it controls its people. It worked for Adolf, and
Justice Roberts turned his back on the constitution he was supposed to uphold
today and mark my words - his legacy will forever be linked to opening the gate
wide for socialism in America. Yes that is his shameful legacy. This ridiculous
tax interpretation of Roberts was shot down by every single justice - only
Roberts "used" this piece of creative interpretation to slide this law
to passage. The other liberal justices used the commerce clause as their
reasoning. Roberts will forever be demonized throughout the ages especially as
the HUGE tax burden continues to hit Americans year after year - both
conservative and LIBERAL!!
I am not in favor of forcing people to get health insurance if they don't
want to get it. I do however think a law needs to be in place to guarantee that
no one can be turned down for insurance for any preexisting conditions and limit
the premium price paid to one that is affordable to all. If a person then
elects to not purchase insurance they shouldn't be allowed to receive
treatment if they aren't able to pay for it. This I feel is fair for all
involved.Although this is (sort of) of topic I would like to mention
it. In Texas we have a law that you can forgo purchasing car insurance if you
put up a bond with the state. This acknowledges a freedom to choose and yet
demands a level of accountability.
whether utahs vote for or against President Obama is immaterial (as the lawyers
say). Under the electoral college system,. Utah,s electoral votes have not
mattered in any presidential election during my life, 63 years and its not going
to matter this year.
The governor says repeal Obamacare by repealing Obama. By default, that means
"vote for Romney", but is Romney much different? Yesterday, Romney said
he would keep pieces of the legislation like protection for pre-existing
conditions and allowing children to remain on a parent's policy until age
26.Romney is out of step with the Republican Party which has vowed
to repeal the Affordable Care Act in total. No worries there. Mitt has plenty
of time to flip his position, again. If Mitt doesn't flip, then
he would repeal the piece that pays for the Affordable Care Act. He offers NO
solution for paying for healthcare. That is very much in line with the
Republican Party, such as when they passed unfunded Medicare Part D. It is an
unfortunate strategy (for America)... pass unfunded legislation, then blame the
Democrats for the deficit.
What too many people forget -- or choose to ignore -- is the fact that we have
all been paying a hidden tax for years.A tax imposed on the rest of
us by those who do not have -- or can't afford -- health insurance. The other tax we have been paying goes directly to health insurance
companies. What is it? 30% of our premiums go for "administrative"
costs? Why is it that "administration" of insurance companies is so
costly while for Medicare it's something like 12%?Profit is a
dirty word for some people. Gouging is even dirtier. But isn't gouging what
is actually happening? All the ACA does is move the hidden tax from
the shadows and take it into the sunlight. But some of our politicians are like
vampires. They shun the light.
@ModerateUnfortunately, there is much truth to what you say--both
democrats and republicans have gone way too far with government programs. We
would all be far better off if neither the state nor the fed had ever gotten
involved in health care. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Certainly,
health insurance makes sense for the unusual and the unexpected, as typified by
our home insurance, car insurance, etc. But now we simply equate health CARE
with health INSURANCE. Hangnail? File an insurance claim. Nagging headache?
File an insurance claim. Ugly pimple? File an insurance claim. If
we have expenses to pay, what is the most efficient way to pay them? Running
them through employers, insurance companies, the IRS, the U.S. congress, the
federal bureaucracy, a thousand paper-pushers? Of course not--the least
expensive way is to pay them ourselves--get the service, pay the bill--done.
BUT, you say, health care is SO EXPENSIVE! You are right--it is terribly
expensive, MOSTLY because, for 35 years, nobody cared what it cost because
SOMEONE ELSE was paying the bill. That is why we are in the mess we
ok, let me get this right. Liberals are happy because there is now a new
government program that will either tax the poor for non-compliance with the
will of the government or will raise the cost of insurance so that the poor and
middleclass will have a harder time paying for insurance.Don't
you liberals claim to care for the poor? Why would you tax them and make health
insurance more expensive?Reading the comments so far, you can see
the divide that Obama is fostering in the US. You have those who want to choose
for themselves what they do with their lives, and those who would turn big
decisions over to the government. The scarry thing is that as conservatives
wake up and start voicing their opinions, the liberals become more enraged. The
enraged liberals have a history of turning violent, and with today's
communications could cause havoc throughout the US all so that they can
"protest" conservatives who dare to stand up to them.
@ one old man"Why is it that "administration" of
insurance companies is so costly while for Medicare it's something like
12%?"I will tell you why. It is because the whole federal
government bureaucracy is so far-flung, complicated and unaccounted for, that
you can pick and choose your numbers when you are analyzing a certain government
program, and come up with whatever number you choose. As a former CPA, I can
tell you that ANYTHING that is paid for with our income tax has a huge amount of
cost associated with it before it even gets into the government coffers and is
earmarked for any government program.Consider this: you go to Home
Depot and purchase a $50 item as part of your home maintenance, and you pay for
it. Think how efficient that is! Now think about what the cost would be if
that transaction, the accounting for it, and the payment for it included the
entire U.S. federal bureaucracy (Medicare Claim?) The IRS, the law-making, the
highly-paid bureaucrats, the myriad of paper-shufflers, the fraudulent cases,
the audits, etc., etc., etc. I can assure you, IT IS NOT EFFICENT!
So this is how liberty dies; with the masses demanding the state to wait on
them hand and foot and the state cleverly pretending to conform with their
wishes while assuming more control. The Supreme Court overstepped their bounds
by doctering it before they upheld it. I find it most disheartening that the
American public now consider socialism simply the polite and politically correct
thing to do. Going from what I have been hearing on the streets and the
predominant gist of the comments here, everyone thinks they will never have to
pay another doctor bill again and are expecting free plastic surgery as well. I
have one question for you guys; what are you going to do when the state decides
something in regards to your healthcare that you vehemently don't want such
as denial of care for a chronic condition? I know many of you believe that this
will never happen here, but I guarantee you it will. Rest in peace US
constitution, you were wonderful while you were here.
...and replace it with?
