Totally out of Iona's league.
Um, you were saying?
What an epic comeback by a BYU team that wasn't willing to give up! The future
will always look bright as long as you have a group with that much heart.Rise and shout!
Great half time adjustment. After a 1st half of poor shot selection and rushed
threes, they start putting the ball in to Davies and Hartsock more. And
obviously, much improved defense. Holding a team scoreless for 9 minutes?
Excellent! And a big shout out to Harrison. He really stepped up in
this game when they needed some defense and managed to chip in 12 points and
some big, timely shots as well. Now if only Abouo would discover what
it is to be a "senior leader" before Thursday...
BYU's 25-point comeback is the largest comeback in NCAA H*I*S*T*O*R*Y!!!Congratulations Cougars!!!
Now that is a team that either showed a lot of heart or someone put pickle juice
in the water for the second half. What an awesome job of coaching.
Can TJ Fredette come back and sing another verse of AMAZING!!! This was truly
the most amazing BB game I have ever seen. The Cougs showed incredible heart
and never quit. Hartsock, Davies, Zylstra, Abouo, Carlino, Winder, Cusick,
Harrison, and Austin - I salute you for what you accomplished tonight.Thank you Dave Rose for creating such an amazing team.
Cue the National Championship talk................
The trolls may not be commenting but I quarantee they will not be sleeping all
Pretty great comeback. Granted Iona sure stank it up. But great half time
adjustment, coming from this Ute fan. I always believed in giving credit where
credit is due. Now the Cougars better get ready for an even tougher game.
KKCC: You are very clever. Congratulations.
Was a great come back but not a 1st round game. Now they get Marquette in the
1st round.Good luck
Scores speak louder than trolls. Nice, Cougars, nice.
It's like Iona had their Grand Finale in the first half and then ran out of
energy. They were incredibly fast and had BYU on the ropes. This was a
spectacular comeback. I don't think it will matter on Thursday because
Marquette is NOT Iona. But congrats to BYU anyway.
The bad news is that the Cougs are still a #14 seed playing a #3. The good news
s that the Big East is, as always, vastly overrated, meaning BYU has a much
better chance against Marquette than the "experts" will say.
This Game will be talked about forever, but it's still one game at a time
Hi utahcountyute,You might want to double-check the tournament
structure. Do this: Go to the ESPN web page, proceed to the NCAA basketball
tournament brackets, and take a look at the term used to describe the games on
Tues. March 13 and Wed. March 14. Are you there yet?"First
Round"The Thurs/Fri games are officially considered to be the
"Second Round." That said, I'm sure you just made an honest mistake.
@utahcountyuteCheck your bracket. This was a first round game. Second
round starts on Thursday.
KKCC,Looks like you are the only one talking about an NC. We appreciate
your support but the rest of us are happy with this win and hoping for a second
half type effort that lasts 40 min. on Thursday
CougFaninTXYou'll have to forgive utahcountyute his misinformation;
it's been so long since the Utes played in the NCAA tourney, that their fans
haven't been able to keep up with changing times.--------------------------------------BYU showed a lot of grit and
determination tonight. Coach Rose was brilliant with his substitutions, however,
settling down the Cougars, and getting them to play within themselves.Congratulations Cougars on a gutsy performance!
Nice comeback win.Hartsock made me realize that this tourney still
rewards upperclassmen leadership.
Sorry guys, no matter what the bracket tells you, nobody other than the teams in
the "first four" truly consider this win a 1st round win... BYU simply
made it into the tourney tonight. This is exactly why bracket contests don't
lock down until Thursday morning. That being said, congrats are in
order on a nice comeback tonight, the cougs showed heart. Despite
what others have said, this was a terrible coaching job by Rose. The only chance
Iona had going in was to get in a track meet and have BYU ignore Davies and
Hartsock. It took Rose 15 minutes to get his team to slow down and use their
advantage. If it wasn't for some atrocious shooting from a 14 seed (that
shouldn't have made the first four), the hole would've been too deep to dig out
of. Just the truth.
Congratulations BYU on the largest comeback in NCAA tournament history -
Sorry motorbike, but your whining, jealous rant is clueless.BYU's
historic win tonight will be considered just as legitimate and nationally
respected by the pundits as ANY win the first week of the tournament!lol, at your analysis, though.Teams that live by the 3 often die
by the 3. Iona was lights out in the 1st half, cold in the 2nd half, due mainly
to BYU improved defense. After a 10-day layoff, BYU was obviously
rusty in the 1st half, which contributed mightily to their 13 1st half
turnovers. As soon as BYU settled down and stopped turning the ball over, BYU
began cutting into Iona's lead and the Gaels lost confidence in their outside
Looking forward to facing Marquette now. After getting the rust and jitters out
of their systems, the BYU players looked much more like they should.Great coaching, Mr. Rose!Too bad Carlino hasn't learned how to
handle pressure. Marquette's pressure will make Iona's look like child's play.
Maybe Rose should start Cusick instead, to throw off their game plan. It was
obvious that Iona knew about Carlino's weakness that was exposed in later WCC
games.Setting an NCAA record in comeback points is great. What a
show it was tonight!Go Cougars!!!
Three reasons for the victory:* Iona wore out* great coaching
by Rose* the team has heart* no WCC refs
Nice first round win. Largest comeback in tourney HISTORY!Great job
Cougars! Now if the rest of the teams from Utah can win their games in the big
dance...Oh wait....This was one epic win.
"biggest comeback in NCAA tournament history"~NCAA"A rally for the ages"~Sports Illustrated"the
second incredible comeback of the night, this one perhaps even more
amazing"~Sporting News"On 27 trips against the zone
between the 12:35 mark of the first half and the 8:20 mark of the second Â
thatÂs 25:15 of game time  Iona produced three scores. ThatÂs an
11 percent success rate."~Sporting News
Truth Machine -It's hilarious that you'd write, "your whining,
jealous rant is clueless" and "lol, at your analysis" yet you then
write, "As soon as BYU settled down and stopped turning the ball over, BYU
began cutting into Iona's lead and the Gaels lost confidence in their outside
shooting."All you did was help make my point. Rose never
should've had BYU running and gunning in the first place. "Settling
down" as you said, and going to the low post is exactly what got them back
in the game ... and they were awfully lucky that first 15 minutes of lousy
coaching didn't cost them. A good team would've finished them off.Don't get me wrong, Rose is a good coach ... he simply blew his initial
approach to what should've been obvious in this one. I don't care what any
cougar fan says, this was NOT Rose's best coaching job.
I think it deserves to be stated again: largest comeback in NCAA tourney
HISTORY! And BYU owns it. So glad I got to take part in it.
Did anyone notice the comeback started when Carlino was on the bench? He has
been playing out of control. Most turnovers and fast break points by IONA were
Carlino's fault. I hope he can figure out how to calm down and involve his team
To allI'm sorry but this was no first round game. The powers that be
(NCAA and ESPN) do not want it labeled as a "play-in game" but that is
exactly was it is. In fact, I can still change my bracket right now. It is what it is. Do I want byU to beat an ACC team? YUP. Will it
It's amusing to listen to some Ute fans get defensive about the phrase "PAC
10.2" and throw a tantrum and demand everyone recognize that the PAC
expanded, and then have Ute fans show up on this article and deny the fact that
the NCAA tournament expanded.
@motorbikeNice try at a back-handed compliment but you simply dont
have the facts on your side.First off, this DOES count as a
tournament win meaning that BYU has extended its streak of seasons with a win in
the NCAA tournament to 3, and their streak of seasons with an NCAA tournament
appearance to 6.Second, Rose's gameplan for IONA was not the problem
in the first half. Turnovers were the problem, and the fact that IONA was
shooting the lights out. You cant slow down the tempo and get the ball in to
your big men if your point guard is turning the ball over every time he tries to
bring it down the court. Carlino simply could not handle the full court press
that IONA's quicker, more athletic guards were throwing at him. People need to
remember Carlino is still a freshman and was playing in his first NCAA
tournament game. He got flustered bad. Rose recognized this and made the proper
adjustment to bring Cusick off the bench and that was what turned the whole game
around because he was able to break the press and get BYU into their offense.
Rose's gameplan was just fine.
agbNobody's denying the NCAA expanded the tournament or that the
cougs technically won what is now considered a first round game. We're simply
keeping you grounded by letting you know how the rest of the country VIEWS the
first four. I'd feel no different if it was Utah in the first four. Again, everyone can still change their brackets until tomorrow morning.
Hi utahcountyute,So, what you're saying is that the sponsoring
organization (the NCAA) doesn't have the right to designate the Tues/Wed games
as the "First Round?" Seriously?I suppose you also think
the first round of the NFL playoffs is not really the first round because some
teams have byes. After all, you can still change your picks for who will win
the subsequent rounds after the first round has taken place, am I right? It looks like common sense has little place in the rants of the jealous.
You should cheer up, though. It is likely that the Utes will improve next year
(it's difficult to win fewer than 6 games in a weak conference like the Pac 12)
and give you something to cheer for instead of focusing all of your efforts into
cheering against others. P.S. BYU already beat an ACC team this
year (on Jan 25th). Did you miss it? Wait...let me guess: Virginia Tech
suddenly doesn't count as a member of the ACC because you say so, right?
HawkeyeWow, so when byU loses to Marquette, they won't be considered
"one and done" like all the other teams in the field of 64 who lose? They can call it whatever they want. It is what it is though, a PLAY-IN
GAME. Don't get all upset though, VCU was in the "First
Four" and made it to the "Final Four". I would imagine
that you don't have byU going to the Final Four though:)
motorbike:Thank you for confirming what most BYU fans have been
saying all along: the PAC only has one team in the tournament. Or at least
that's how "everyone VIEWS"it. Those that don't are, well as you
insinuate, not grounded in reality.
utahcountyuteYou're so blinded by your jealousy that you're
unwilling to accept reality. Two 16-seed auto qualifiers from small
conferences playing for the right to get destroyed by a 1-seed MIGHT be seen as
a play-in game.But, two at-large 11-, 12- or 14-seeds hardly fit the
bill.By your twisted logic, 12-seed California, the highest ranked
team from the PAC 12, which was totally dominated in a "play-in" game
with another 12-seed tonight, didn't even play an official game in the
tournament, officially making the "conference of champions" a one-bid
league, not good enough to even be called a mid-major.Welcome to
small conference status! Satisfied now?
Tough dilemma for the trolls. Can't argue that BYU didn't win a legitimate NCAA
tourney game without arguing that the PAC 12 is nothing more than a small
BC and SkywalkerThe PAC 12 has little to no representation in this
year's tournament, that is fact. But to say that the PAC 12 is a "small"
conference? FunnyConsider this....there are three conferences that
always produce the highest number of NBA players. The ACC, BIG 12 and guess who?
I'll give you a clue, it's not the WCC. That's right it's that "little"
PAC 12 who is ahead of the SEC, Big Least and Big 10. I guess I'm
just a purist. Games outside of the field of 64 are "play-in games" and
always will be. btw... I can still change my bracket.
utahcountyuteBasketball is a TEAM sport; it doesn't matter how many
individual players end up playing in the NBA, if the college teams they play on
aren't good enough to even make the NCAA tournament.Small
conferences only get one bid.Based on your argument, PAC 12 only got
one bid.PAC 12 = small conferenceSpin it anyway you
like, but the PAC 12 is no better than any other small conference.
