One could speculate that the more religious a population is the more liable it
becomes to having the wool pulled over its eyes. After all... people
are inherently good natured and just want to help out... right?
No matter who coined the phrase about a sucker being born every minute, he was
right. And whoever said, buyer beware was doubly right. You might as well flush
money down the toilet as to go for any scheme presented by that nice fellow in
any church, PTA group or enlightenment seminar. Call me a pessimist, but I am a
pessimist with my savings and my pride intact.
One hears, and occasionally, even observes such unfortunate situations,
particularly in the retirement communities of Southern Utah.Residents
should be very grateful for assistance in this area. Residents shall, anxiously,
be watching the outcome and decisions made as a result of this conference.
Thats so creepy, trying to scam those that have been Dead for so long'
The other side of the coin, that is missed always - even in this article - is
how fraud, mainly the paranoia/scare of fraud, affects real business... Many
legitimate business proposals cannot even be presented due to scare of being a
scam... Always remember, that SOMEBODY ALWAYS PAYS and in a scam YOU
are responsible ( regardless of your losses or winnings)
It just might be that the greatest fraud of the world in the one known as
The article forgot to publish the statistic that Utah has been #1or 2 in fraud
perpetration for the past 18 years. Now either Utah is full of
gullible folks or it has a high number of fraud perps. Which is it?
I thought the basic principle of Republicanism is to let the free market run! If
people get scammed in the process, why it's their money and it's their fault.
Those guys are just trying to run a business, aren't they? How come Gov. Gary is
up there talking about regulating the market?
Trust often. Always, verify.
I read an article about a woman in my state who was looking for paralegal work
through Craigslist - which she has done successfully several times before, and
someone e-mailed her back, asking her to be a mystery shopper. They sent her a
"washed" cashier's check for more money than originally stated. She
was sharp, and notified the bank and others. Another example of
fraud that can happen anywhere, anytime.
Grant Afleck - Paul Dunn need I say more?
Wow, the LDS church is way ahead of the curve on this one. So glad they stepped
forward before this got to be a big problem. Reminds of the Proclamation on the
Family that they sent out way before anyone else was calling for a strengthening
of families and family values. I mean, no one else has been warning us of
affinity fraud nor was anyone talking about family values before September 1995
at all. Come to think of it, no one was talking about how smoking
and drinking were bad for you prior to Joseph Smith had the Word of Wisdom
prophecy. There was NO ONE talking about how alcohol and tobacco were bad for
you back in the 1830s.Oh wait, I just googled and found out that
indeed, for over 20 years, there have been other groups warning Utahns about
affinity fraud. Oh and I forgot that Dan Quayle was vilified for espousing
family values in 1992. Oh, whoops, I guess there were temperance or "dry
societies" around the 1820s and 1830s, yet, funny that I thought that the
Word of Wisdom was way ahead of its time? Huh.
Thinkman,There is nothing here about this being a first of its kind
revelation. I have heard church leaders warn against this stuff for years.
This is just a new iteration, a variation on a theme.Nor does
revelation have to be in first position chronologically. Christ often quoted
what we now call the Old Testament or applied those concepts. Didn't mean what
he said was somehow improper. As to the WofW being first. Certainly
not reference alcohol. That would be the Old Testament (at least regarding
drunkenness). However I can recall ads touting the benefits of smoking.
Overall, the WofW was quite early. But early or late is not the same
as true. For that, you need a personal witness.
